Maria Sakkari found her back against the excellent Claire Liu, but she showed character and got a great qualification to the third round of Roland Garros after five years!

Maria Sakkari reminds us again… Maria Sakkari in Paris! The top Greek tennis player showed tremendous composure and mental strength against Claire Liu, turned around a match that seemed to be going dangerously wrong and with a 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3 victory she qualified to the third round of Roland Garros for the first time since 2021.

And she did it with a comeback. The American, who entered the main draw from the qualifiers, put tremendous pressure on Sakkari from the start. In the first set, both players held their service games and the tie-break came as a natural consequence.

There, Sakkari took the lead, touching the set, but Liou not only stayed alive, but also took the momentum, winning the tie-break 9-7 after a great battle. And as if that wasn't enough for Maria, the rest became even more difficult.

The 26-year-old American came on "furiously" in the second set, made it 3-0 and seemed to have brought the game exactly where she wanted. But there, Sakkari showed her personality.

She began to raise the intensity from the baseline, pressed much more on the returns and took advantage of the fact that Liou began to be noticeably affected by the heat and the pace of the match.

The break back came quickly for 3-3 and from that point on, the match completely changed hands. Sakkari won six consecutive games, dominated the big rallies and brought the game to her own level, tying the set at 1-1.

The Greek tennis player entered the third set with a clear mind and confidence. She took an early lead of 4-1, continued to control the pace and although the combative Liu tried to come back, reducing to 5-3, Sakkari did not panic.

With a solid service game, she closed the match and with it the qualification. In the third round of Roland Garros, she will face another qualifier, the Polish Maja Chwalinska, who is making an impressive run in Paris and has already left Cheng and Mertens out.

Η Μαρία Σάκκαρη βρέθηκε με την πλάτη στον τοίχο απέναντι στην εξαιρετική Κλερ Λίου, όμως έβγαλε χαρακτήρα και πήρε σπουδαία πρόκριση στον τρίτο γύρο του Roland Garros μετά από πέντε χρόνια!

Η Μαρία Σάκκαρη θυμίζει ξανά… Μαρία Σάκκαρη στο Παρίσι! Η κορυφαία Ελληνίδα τενίστρια έδειξε τρομερή ψυχραιμία και πνευματική αντοχή απέναντι στην Κλερ Λίου, γύρισε ένα ματς που έμοιαζε να στραβώνει επικίνδυνα και με νίκη 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3 προκρίθηκε στον τρίτο γύρο του Roland Garros για πρώτη φορά μετά το 2021.

Και το έκανε με comeback. Η Αμερικανίδα, που μπήκε στο κυρίως ταμπλό από τα προκριματικά έβαλε τρομερή πίεση στη Σάκκαρη από την αρχή. Στο πρώτο σετ οι δύο παίκτριες κράτησαν τα service games τους και το tie-break ήρθε ως φυσικό επακόλουθο.

Εκεί η Σάκκαρη προηγήθηκε, άγγιξε το σετ, όμως η Λίου όχι μόνο έμεινε ζωντανή, αλλά πήρε και το momentum, κατακτώντας το tie-break με 9-7 μετά από μεγάλη μάχη. Και σαν να μην έφτανε αυτό για τη Μαρία, η συνέχεια έγινε ακόμα πιο δύσκολη.

Η 26χρονη Αμερικανίδα μπήκε «φουριόζα» στο δεύτερο σετ, έκανε το 3-0 και έδειχνε να έχει φέρει το παιχνίδι ακριβώς εκεί που ήθελε. Εκεί όμως η Σάκκαρη έβγαλε προσωπικότητα.

Άρχισε να ανεβάζει ένταση από τη baseline, πίεσε πολύ περισσότερο στις επιστροφές και εκμεταλλεύτηκε το γεγονός ότι η Λίου άρχισε να επηρεάζεται αισθητά από τη ζέστη και τον ρυθμό του αγώνα.

Το break back ήρθε γρήγορα για το 3-3 και από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά το ματς άλλαξε ολοκληρωτικά χέρια. Η Σάκκαρη πήρε έξι συνεχόμενα games, κυριάρχησε στα μεγάλα ράλις και έφερε το παιχνίδι στα μέτρα της, ισοφαρίζοντας σε 1-1 σετ.

Στο τρίτο σετ η Ελληνίδα τενίστρια μπήκε πλέον με καθαρό μυαλό και αυτοπεποίθηση. Πήρε από νωρίς προβάδισμα με 4-1, συνέχισε να ελέγχει τον ρυθμό και παρότι η μαχητική Λιου προσπάθησε να επιστρέψει μειώνοντας σε 5-3, η Σάκκαρη δεν πανικοβλήθηκε.

Με σταθερό service game έκλεισε το ματς και μαζί την πρόκριση. Στον τρίτο γύρο του Roland Garros θα βρει απέναντί της άλλη μία qualifier, την Πολωνή Μάγια Χβαλίνσκα, η οποία πραγματοποιεί εντυπωσιακή πορεία στο Παρίσι και έχει ήδη αφήσει εκτός τις Τσενγκ και Μέρτενς.
