Olympiacos – Saint-Nazaire 3-1: Terrible red and white team, eliminated the French champions and qualified for the “8” against the powerful Jastrzebski

Olympiacos made it “two for two” against Saint-Nazaire, qualified for the quarterfinals of the Champions League volleyball and now Jastrzebski will be in front of it. Which is the powerful Polish team that wants to stop the “red and white” dreams of a presence in the Final Four of the competition.

The men’s volleyball department of Olympiacos is living moments from 2010, when it made its last great run in the Champions League volleyball, reaching the final 6 of the institution, while we remind you that the Piraeus team is also a two-time finalist (1992 and 2002).

The “red and white” team at the packed “Melina Mercouri” once again defeated the French champion, Saint Nazaire, with a 3-1 set, pairing the victories and securing a place in the quarterfinals of the top inter-club competition.

Atanasiewicz was named MVP for Andrea Gardini’s team with 17 points, while Perin took a large share of the offensive scoring, who, however, also made some great saves.

In the “8” the Greek doubles team will face the mighty Jastrzebski, with the first game scheduled for March 11-12 or 13 at “M. Mercouri”, while the return match is a week later, specifically on March 19 in Poland.

But what is Jastrzebski? This is a Polish team, founded in 1961. In these 63 years, it has won the domestic championship four times (2004, 2021, 2023, 2024), with its trophy cabinet including three more titles. A Polish Cup in 2010 and two Super Cups (2022 and 2023).

Jastrzebski has also shown its potential in Europe in recent years, since in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons it is a finalist of the Champions League volleyball.

In 2023 it lost in the Final Four final to the also Polish Zaska with 3-2 sets, while last year it was defeated by Trentino with 3-0.

He has a total of five appearances in the Final Four Champions League (2011, 2014, 2022, 2023, 2024), while he is also a finalist in the CEV Challenge Cup of the 2008/09 season.

The match

Olympiacos entered the crucial game sluggishly, which Saint-Nazaire took advantage of with a quick 0-3. In fact, two of the three points came from an ace.

The Greek doubles team, however, balanced the situation with a 3-0 run of their own, while they managed an ace from Koumendakis to go ahead for the first time (6-5).

Perrin made a great defense and Koumendakis got the block out for 11-8, with Canham scoring an ace, the third for the French team, for 11-10.

However, in the middle of the set, the “red and white” began to build a big gap. Initially, Atanasijević celebrated Olympiacos’ second ace for 15-11, with the Serbian diagonally continuing to take attacks, resulting in the home team reaching +5 (18-13).

One well-aimed and one misplaced attack by Perin made it 21-16, before the Piraeus team found itself with six set balls in their possession.

In the end, the French managed to “erase” just one, Perin executed for 25-19 and 1-0 for Olympiacos in the sets.

The statistics of the first set: 15-8 the nails that brought points, 2-0 the blocks, 3-3 the aces, 4-7 the opponent’s errors.

The second set began with an ace from Saint-Nazaire, who took a 4-2 lead, before Andrea Gardini's total equalized at 4-4.

Perrin gave Olympiacos the point for 8-8, in the biggest rally of the match.

At that point, the “red and white” blocking, which had cost them in previous games, made its appearance.

The French block stopped Atanasievic for 9-12, while Koumendakis' miscalculation maintained the +3 for the French champions (12-15).

Olympiacos' bad decisions in attack and the not very accurate finishing led Saint-Nazaire to a 1-1 draw in the sets (16-21).

The statistics of the second set: 9-10 points scored, 2-4 blocks, 0-1 aces, 6-10 opponent's errors.

In the third set, Olympiacos entered with a “knife in the teeth”. Perrin celebrated with a “good morning” ace, while with his serves he spoiled the reception of the French, resulting in the Piraeus team leading 4-0.

Koumendakis jumped high and finished the phase strongly for 8-2 with the French team looking unable to raise their heads until 11-4.

From that point on, the guests began their counterattack, who slowly gnawed away at the gap, which they eventually lost to the point (15-14).

The poorly executed first time by the central Saint Nazaire allowed the Piraeus team to breathe again (17-14).

Atanasievic took the 21st point to rouse “M. Mercouri” (21-18). Olympiacos believed at 24-21 that everything was decided, with the French champion taking advantage of it and bringing the game to 24-23.

There, Pagenk put an end to the “red and white” anxiety with an imposing first time, with the players of the Piraeus team breaking out in furious celebrations.

The statistics of the third set: 11-12 the nails that brought points, 3-3 the blocks, 1-0 the aces, 9-6 the opponent’s errors.

Given that Olympiacos took the two sets it was looking for, the fourth set turned into a chore for both teams.

The Italian coach of the “red and white” fielded the second unit, which left him in the white face, giving the Piraeus team the set 25-21 and the victory 3-1, just like in France.

Ο Ολυμπιακός έκανε το “δύο στα δύο” κόντρα στη Σεντ Ναζέρ, προκρίθηκε στα προημιτελικά του Champions League βόλεϊ και πλέον μπροστά του θα βρεθεί η Γιαστρέμπσκι. Ποια είναι η πανίσχυρη πολωνική ομάδα που θέλει να σταματήσει τα “ερυθρόλευκα” όνειρα παρουσίας στο Final Four της διοργάνωσης.

Το τμήμα βόλεϊ ανδρών του Ολυμπιακού ζει στιγμές 2010, όταν πραγματοποίησε την τελευταία του μεγάλη πορεία στο Champions League βόλεϊ, φτάνοντας στην τελική 6άδα του θεσμού, ενώ θυμίζουμε ότι οι Πειραιώτες είναι και δύο φορές φιναλίστ (1992 και 2002).

Οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” στο κατάμεστο “Μελίνα Μερκούρη” κατάπιαν ξανά με 3-1 σετ την πρωταθλήτρια Γαλλίας, Σεντ Ναζέρ, ζευγάρωσαν τις νίκες και έκλεισαν θέση στα προημιτελικά της κορυφαίας διασυλλογικής διοργάνωσης.

MVP για το σύνολο του Αντρέα Γκαρντίνι αναδείχθηκε ο Ατανασίεβιτς με 17 πόντους, ενώ μεγάλο μερίδιο του επιθετικού σκοραρίσματος πήρε στις πλάτες του ο Πέριν, ο οποίος, όμως, έβγαλε και μερικές σπουδαίες άμυνες.

Στους “8” οι νταμπλούχοι Ελλάδας θα βρουν μπροστά τους την πανίσχυρη Γιαστρέμπσκι, με το πρώτο παιχνίδι να είναι προγραμματισμένο για τις 11-12 ή 13 Μαρτίου στο “Μ. Μερκούρη”, ενώ η ρεβάνς μία εβδομάδα αργότερα και συγκεκριμένα στις 19 Μαρτίου στην Πολωνία.

Τι εστί όμως Γιαστρέμπσκι; Πρόκειται για πολωνική ομάδα, που ιδρύθηκε το 1961. Σε αυτά τα 63 χρόνια έχει κερδίσει τέσσερις φορές το εγχώριο πρωτάθλημα (2004, 2021, 2023, 2024), με την τροπαιοθήκη της να περιλαμβάνει ακόμα τρεις τίτλους. Ένα Κύπελλο Πολωνίας το 2010 και δύο Σούπερ Καπ (2022 και 2023).

Η Γιαστρέμπσκι τα τελευταία χρόνια δείχνει τη δυναμική της και στην Ευρώπη, αφού της σεζόν 2022/23 και 2023/24 είναι φιναλίστ του Champions League βόλεϊ.

Το 2023 έχασε στον τελικό του Final Four από την, επίσης, πολωνική Ζάσκα με 3-2 σετ, ενώ πέρυσι ηττήθηκε από την Τρεντίνο με 3-0.

Μετράει συνολικά πέντε παρουσίες σε Final Four Champions League (2011, 2014, 2022, 2023, 2024), ενώ είναι φιναλίστ και στο CEV Challenge Cup της αγωνιστικής περιόδου 2008/09.

Το ματς

Ο Ολυμπιακός μπήκε νωθρά στο κρίσιμο παιχνίδι, κάτι που εκμεταλλεύτηκε η Σεντ Ναζέρ με ένα γρήγορο 0-3. Μάλιστα, οι δύο από τους τρεις πόντους προήλθαν από άσο.

Οι νταμπλούχοι Ελλάδας, όμως, ισορρόπησαν την κατάσταση με ένα δικό τους 3-0 σερί, ενώ κατάφεραν άσο του Κουμεντάκη να περάσουν για πρώτη φορά μπροστά στο σκορ (6-5).

Ο Πέριν έβγαλε μεγάλη άμυνα και ο Κουμεντάκης πήρε το μπλοκ άουτ για το 11-8, με τον Κάνχαμ να σημειώνει άσο, τον τρίτο της γαλλικής ομάδας, για το 11-10.

Ωστόσο, στα μέσα του σετ οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” άρχισαν να χτίζουν μία μεγάλη διαφορά. Αρχικά ο Ατανασίεβιτς πανηγύρισε τον δεύτερο άσο του Ολυμπιακού για το 15-11, με τον Σέρβο διαγώνιο να συνεχίζει να παίρνει επιθέσεις, με συνέπεια οι γηπεδούχοι να φτάσουν στο +5 (18-13).

Μία εύστοχη και μία άστοχη επίθεση του Πέριν διαμόρφωσαν το 21-16, πριν οι Πειραιώτες βρεθούν με έξι set ball στην κατοχή τους.

Εν τέλει οι Γάλλοι κατάφεραν να “διαγράψουν” μόλις ένα, ο Περίν εκτέλεσε για το 25-19 και το 1-0 του Ολυμπιακού στα σετ.

Τα στατιστικά του πρώτου σετ: 15-8 τα καρφιά που έφεραν πόντο, 2-0 τα μπλοκ, 3-3 οι άσοι, 4-7 τα λάθη του αντίπαλου. 

Το δεύτερο σετ άρχισε με άσο της Σεντ Ναζέρ, η οποία πήρε κεφάλι με 4-2, πριν το σύνολο του Αντρέα Γκαρντίνι ισοφαρίσει σε 4-4.

Ο Πέριν έδωσε τον πόντο στον Ολυμπιακό για το 8-8, στο μεγαλύτερο ράλι του ματς.

Σε εκείνο το σημείο έκανε την εμφάνισή του το “ερυθρόλευκο” μπλοκάρισμα, το οποίο σε προηγούμενα παιχνίδια του στοίχισε.

Το γαλλικό μπλοκ έβαλε στοπ στον Ατανασίεβιτς για το 9-12, ενώ η λανθασμένη εκτίμηση του Κουμεντάκη διατήρησε το +3 για τους πρωταθλητές Γαλλίας (12-15).

Οι κακέςαποφάσεις του Ολυμπιακού στην επίθεση και τα χωρίς μεγάλη ευστοχία τελειώματα οδήγησαν τη Σεντ Ναζέρ αγκαλιά με το 1-1 στα σετ (16-21).

Τα στατιστικά του δεύτερου σετ: 9-10 τα καρφιά που έφεραν πόντο, 2-4 τα μπλοκ, 0-1 οι άσοι, 6-10 τα λάθη του αντίπαλου.

Στο τρίτο σετ ο Ολυμπιακός μπήκε με το “μαχαίρι στα δόντια”. Ο Πέριν πανηγύρισε με το “καλημέρα” τον άσο, ενώ με τα σερβίς του χάλασε την υποδοχή των Γάλλων, με αποτέλεσμα οι Πειραιώτες να προηγηθούν με 4-0.

Ο Κουμεντάκης πήδηξε ψηλά και τελείωσε δυνατά τη φάση για το 8-2 με τους Γάλλους να μοιάζουν ανίκανοι να σηκώσουν κεφάλι μέχρι και το 11-4.

Από εκείνο το σημείο και μετά άρχισε η αντεπίθεση των φιλοξενούμενων, που σιγά σιγά ροκάνισαν τη διαφορά, την οποία και έριξαν στον πόντο (15-14).

Ο κακά εκτελεσμένος πρώτος χρόνος από τον κεντρικό της Σεντ Ναζέρ επέτρεψε στους Πειραιώτες να ανασάνουν και πάλι (17-14).

Ο Ατανασίεβιτς πήρε τον 21ο πόντο για να ξεσηκώσει το “Μ. Μερκούρη” (21-18). Ο Ολυμπιακός πίστεψε στο 24-21 πως όλα είχαν κριθεί, με την πρωταθλήτρια Γαλλίας να το εκμεταλλεύεται και να φέρνει το παιχνίδι στο 24-23.

Εκεί ο Παγένκ με επιβλητικό πρώτο χρόνο έβαλε τέλος στο “ερυθρόλευκο” άγχος, με τους παίκτες της πειραϊκής ομάδας να ξεσπούν σε έξαλλους πανηγυρισμούς.

Με δεδομένο ότι ο Ολυμπιακός πήρε τα δύο σετ που έψαχνε, το τέταρτο σετ μετατράπηκε σε αγγαρεία για αμφότερες τις ομάδες.

Ο Ιταλός προπονητής των “ερυθρόλευκων” παράταξε τη second unit, η οποία τον έβγαλε ασπροπρόσωπο, χαρίζοντας με 25-21 το σετ στους Πειραιώτες και τη νίκη με 3-1, όπως ακριβώς και στη Γαλλία.
