The ten days of rest and training were refreshing for Olympiacos, who on Wednesday night (23/4) defeated Real Madrid 84-72 at the packed Peace and Friendship Stadium for 1-0 in the EuroLeague playoffs series.

Sasha Vezenkov played at MVP level (23 points, 7 rebounds, no errors), Evan Fournier followed, Nikola Milutinov did the job on the racket, but the crowd smiled the most for the reappearance of Thomas Walkap who stepped on the court in a match after 69 days. And he also made the three-pointer for 75-61 in the 36th minute, which decided the match.

A lukewarm performance from Real, with Chus Mateo being sent off with two technical penalties and Mario Hezonja being the only one who had the stubbornness and will to claim something in the first game of the series. Until Sergio Yul caught fire, finally scoring 16 points, but it didn't matter as his team had lost the first battle early on.

The MVP

Sasha Vezenkov needed a big performance and he did it in the perfect spot. The Bulgarian superstar played with patience and concentration, he didn’t take “crazy” shots but the ones the opposing defense gave him, he closed the night with 23 points (5/7 two-pointers, 3/4 three-pointers, 4/6 shots) and seven rebounds, but also with three steals that showed how “into” the match he was.

The statistics that stood out

Olympiacos closed the first quarter with 11/14 two-pointers, while Real had two assists for seven mistakes! At halftime, the home team counted 3/13 three-pointers, but the points from the opponent’s mistakes were 14-4. At the end of the night, Olympiacos’ percentage from the perimeter was not good, many numbers raised debate, but the eye is never wrong. And the rivers of energy in defense, decided the first match of a series that has a long way to go.

The match

With Williams-Goss, Fournier, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, Fall, Olympiacos opened the match, which saw its star duo get into the game well (6-2 in 3′). Campasso's trash-talking did not help the Madrid team, the crowd was getting more and more involved in the equation, Vezenkov made a three-pointer for 12-2 and Mateo called timeout without waiting for the TV.

The technique on Mateo in 5′ and Fournier's basket for 17-4 put Olympiacos in an even better position, with the difference reaching 17 (25-8 and 27-10) shortly before the end of the first period. Which was magical for the Piraeus team. The starting five of the second period included Walkap, Williams-Goss and McKissick, with the red and whites not taking their foot off the gas, going back to +17 with a three-pointer by Vezenkov (42-25 at 19′) and dominating the twenty-minute period.

Mateo was charged with a second foul at 21′ and said goodbye, Vezenkov and Papanikolaou led Olympiacos to 52-32 and the picture of the match did not change. No matter what Real tried, it did not work, at least not at a level to trouble the Piraeus team, with Vezenkov feeling invincible (62-44 at 28′), but Yul – Felis closing the third at 64-51.

Campasso – Tavares returned in the 32nd minute for a final push, but Olympiacos was in no mood to make things difficult for themselves. Peters made it 68-53 with a two-pointer and 70-53 with a shot from the corner in the 34th minute, before Walkup made the three-pointer for 75-61 in the 36th minute that definitively decided the match. No matter how hard Yule struggled to make another miracle in his incredible career.

Οι δέκα ημέρες ξεκούρασης και προπόνησης, ήταν αναζωογονητικές για τον Ολυμπιακό που το βράδυ της Τετάρτης (23/4) νίκησε με 84-72 τη Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης στο κατάμεστο Στάδιο Ειρήνης και Φιλίας για το 1-0 στη σειρά των playoffs της EuroLeague.

Ο Σάσα Βεζένκοβ έπαιξε σε επίπεδα MVP (23 πόντοι, 7 ριμπάουντ, χωρίς λάθος), ο Εβάν Φουρνιέ ακολούθησε, ο Νικόλα Μιλουτίνοβ έκανε τη δουλειά στη ρακέτα, περισσότερο όμως ο κόσμος χαμογέλασε για την επανεμφάνιση του Τόμας Γουόκαπ που πάτησε παρκέ σε αγώνα μετά από 69 ημέρες. Και έβαλε και το τρίποντο για το 75-61 στο 36′, που έκρινε την αναμέτρηση.

Χλιαρή εμφάνιση από τη Ρεάλ, με τον Τσους Ματέο να αποβάλλεται με δύο τεχνικές ποινές και τον Μάριο Χεζόνια να είναι ο μόνος που είχε πείσμα και θέληση για να διεκδικήσει κάτι στο πρώτο παιχνίδι της σειράς. Μέχρι να πάρει φωτιά ο Σέρχιο Γιουλ, να σκοράρει τελικά 16 πόντους, αλλά να μην έχει σημασία καθώς η ομάδα του είχε χάσει από νωρίς την πρώτη μάχη.

O MVP

Την είχε ανάγκη μια μεγάλη εμφάνιση ο Σάσα Βεζένκοβ και την έκανε στο ιδανικό σημείο. Ο Βούλγαρος σούπερσταρ έπαιξε με υπομονή και με συγκέντρωση, δεν πήρε “τρελά” σουτ αλλά αυτά που του έδωσε η αντίπαλη άμυνα, έκλεισε τη βραδιά με 23 πόντους (5/7 δίποντα, 3/4 τρίποντα, 4/6 βολές) και επτά ριμπάουντ, αλλά και με τρία κλεψίματα που έδειξαν πόσο “μέσα” στο ματς ήταν.

Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν

Με 11/14 δίποντα έκλεισε ο Ολυμπιακός το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο, την ώρα που η Ρεάλ είχε δύο ασίστ για επτά λάθη! Στο ημίχρονο οι γηπεδούχοι μετρούσαν 3/13 τρίποντα, αλλά οι πόντοι από τα λάθη του αντιπάλου ήταν 14-4. Στο τέλος της βραδιάς το ποσοστό του Ολυμπιακού από την περιφέρεια δεν ήταν καλό, πολλοί αριθμοί σήκωναν συζήτηση, αλλά το μάτι δεν κάνει ποτέ λάθος. Και τα ποτάμια ενέργειας στην άμυνα, έκριναν το πρώτο ματς μίας σειράς που έχει πολύ δρόμο. 

Ο αγώνας

Με Γουίλιαμς-Γκος, Φουρνιέ, Παπανικολάου, Βεζένκοβ, Φαλ άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, που είδε το δίδυμο των αστέρων του να μπαίνει καλά στο παιχνίδι (6-2 στο 3′). Το trash-talking του Καμπάσο δεν βοήθησε τους Μαδριλένους, ο κόσμος έμπαινε όλο και περισσότερο στην εξίσωση, ο Βεζένκοβ έβαλε τρίποντο για το 12-2 και ο Ματέο κάλεσε timeout χωρίς να περιμένει το τηλεοπτικό.

Η τεχνική στον Ματέο στο 5′ και το καλάθι του Φουρνιέ για το 17-4 έβαλαν τον Ολυμπιακό σε ακόμα καλύτερη θέση, με τη διαφορά να φτάνει έως τους 17 (25-8 και 27-10) λίγο πριν από το τέλος της πρώτης περιόδου. Που ήταν μαγική για τους Πειραιώτες. Η πεντάδα στο ξεκίνημα της δεύτερης είχε και Γουόκαπ και Γουίλιαμς-Γκος και ΜακΚίσικ, με τους ερυθρόλευκους να μη σηκώνουν το πόδι από το γκάζι, να πηγαίνουν ξανά στο +17 με τρίποντο του Βεζένκοβ (42-25 στο 19′) και να κυριαρχούν στο εικοσάλεπτο.

Ο Ματέο χρεώθηκε με δεύτερη τεχνική στο 21′ και αποχαιρέτησε, ο Βεζένκοβ κι ο Παπανικολάου οδήγησαν τον Ολυμπιακό στο 52-32 και η εικόνα του ματς δεν άλλαξε. Ό,τι κι αν δοκίμαζε η Ρεάλ δεν λειτουργούσε, τουλάχιστον σε επίπεδο για να προβληματίσει τους Πειραιώτες, με τον Βεζένκοβ να νιώθει ανίκητος (62-44 στο 28′), αλλά τους Γιουλ – Φελίς να κλείνουν την τρίτη στο 64-51.

Καμπάσο – Ταβάρες γύρισαν στο 32′ για ένα τελευταίο push, όμως ο Ολυμπιακός δεν είχε καμία διάθεση για να βάλει δύσκολα στον εαυτό του. Ο Πίτερς έγραψε το 68-53 με δίποντο και το 70-53 με σουτ από την γωνία στο 34′, πριν ο Γουόκαπ βάλει το τρίποντο για το 75-61 στο 36′ που έκρινε οριστικά τον αγώνα. Όσο κι αν πάλευε ο Γιουλ για να κάνει άλλο ένα θαύμα στην απίθανη καριέρα του.
