Regardless of the result, the 30-year-old Greek leaves Madrid with many gains and a positive sign, in the first tournament after her new collaboration with Tom Hill. She now turns her attention to the Rome 1000, where she will need to play matches in the qualifiers to be on the main draw.

The game did not start well for Sakkari, in the opening game she initially responded to 15-40, but did not avoid the break. Immediately after, she missed her own opportunity to take it back, with Svitolina making it 2-0. Sakkari reduced to 2-1, but with two wrong returns, Svitolina made it 3-1.

Playing a dominant game in the 5th game, Sakkari reduced to 3-2 and in this she tried to "build", but did not take advantage of Svitolina's three effortless errors, with the Ukrainian holding her serve (4-2).

Sakkari again easily closed the 7th game (4-3) and with a wonderful drop shot reached a break point in the 8th game, but the Ukrainian with two wonderful points got out of the difficult position for 5-3.

Sakkari, starting with a double and then an easy error in the 9th game, saw Svitolina reach a set point and after an ill-timed backhand from her opponent, conquer it with 6-3.

The two breaks were not enough

The Ukrainian after 0-30, with four points in a row conquered the opening game (1-0) and with the 3rd break in the game reached 2-0.

The battle took place in the 3rd game, with Sakkari reaching the desired goal, with two winners she created the same number of break points and in the second case she succeeded, reducing to 2-1.

However, she did not take advantage of it, with errors in the next game Svitolina achieved the 4th break (3-1) and served to escape with 4-1.

Sakkari reduced to 4-2 and immediately after played her... penultimate card, although she missed two opportunities for a break, the third one also proved to be the most dangerous (4-3).

With her psychology raised, Sakkari responded to 0-30 and with a series of points she tied at 4-4. Svitolina, despite her momentary irritation, had the solutions to take a 5-4 lead and after the Greek's double fault, she found a double match point and on the second chance with a winner, achieved 6-4 and qualified for the quarterfinals.

Η Μαρία Σάκκαρη προσπάθησε απέναντι στην Ελίνα Σβιτολίνα, όμως δεν απέφυγε την ήττα με 6-3, 6-4 από την Ουκρανίδα και τον αποκλεισμό στο 4ο γύρο του Masters της Μαδρίτης.

H Μαρία Σάκκαρη πάλεψε απέναντι στη σπουδαία Ελίνα Σβιτoλίνα, όμως από τη μία η σπουδαία ποιότητα της παίκτριας από την Ουκρανία κι από την άλλη τα λάθη σε κρίσιμα σημεία, έφεραν την ήττα με 6-3, 6-4 και τον αποκλεισμό στη φάση των «16» στο Masters της Μαδρίτης.

Ανεξάρτητα από το αποτέλεσμα, η 30χρονη Ελληνίδα αφήνει τη Μαδρίτη με πολλά κέρδη και θετικό πρόσημο, στο πρώτο τουρνουά μετά τη νέα συνεργασίας της με τον Τομ Χιλ. Πλέον στρέφει την προσοχή της στο 1000άρι της Ρώμης, όπου θα χρειαστεί να δώσει αγώνες στα προκριματικά για να βρεθεί στο κυρίως ταμπλό.

Δεν είχε απάντηση στο αρχικό break και 0-1

Το παιχνίδι δεν άρχισε καλά για τη Σάκκαρη, στο εναρκτήριο game αρχικά απάντησε στο 15-40, όμως δεν απέφυγε το break. Αμέσως μετά έχασε τη δική της ευκαιρία για να το πάρει πίσω, με τη Σβιτολίνα να κάνει το 2-0. Η Σάκκαρη μείωσε σε 2-1, αλλά με δύο λάθος επιστροφές της η Σβιτολίνα έκανε το 3-1.

Παίζοντας κυριαρχικό παιχνίδι στο 5ο game η Σάκκαρη μείωσε σε 3-2 και σε αυτό προσπάθησε να «χτίσει», όμως δεν εκμεταλλεύτηκε τα τρία αβίαστα λάθη της Σβιτολίνα, με την Ουκρανή να κρατά το σερβίς της (4-2).

Η Σάκκαρη ξανά με ευκολία έκλεισε το 7ο game (4-3) και με υπέροχο drop shot έφθασε σε break point στο 8ο game, όμως η Ουκρανή με δύο υπέροχους πόντους βγήκε από τη δύσκολη θέση για το 5-3.

Η Σάκκαρη ξεκινώντας με διπλό και μετά αβίαστο λάθος το 9ο game, είδε τη Σβιτολίνα να φθάνει σε set point και μετά το άστοχο backhand από την αντίπαλό της, να το κατακτά με 6-3.

Τα δύο break δεν ήταν αρκετά

Η Ουκρανή μετά το 0-30, με τέσσερις στη σειρά πόντους κατέκτησε το εναρκτήριο game (1-0) και με το 3ο break στο παιχνίδι έφθασε στο 2-0.

Mάχη έγινε στο 3ο game, με τη Σάκκαρη να φθάνει στο ζητούμενο, με δύο winners δημιούργησε ισάριθμα break points και στη δεύτερη περίπτωση το πέτυχε, μειώνοντας σε 2-1.

Όμως δεν το εκμεταλλεύτηκε, με λάθη στο επόμενο game η Σβιτολίνα πέτυχε το 4ο break (3-1) και σερβίροντας ξέφυγε με 4-1.

Η Σάκκαρη μείωσε σε 4-2 κι αμέσως μετά έπαιξε το... προτελευταίο της χαρτί, αν και έχασε δύο ευκαιρίες για break, η τρίτη αποδείχθηκε και η φαρμακερή (4-3).

Με ανεβασμένη την ψυχολογία η Σάκκαρη απάντησε στο 0-30 και με σερί πόντων ισοφάρισε σε 4-4. Η Σβιτολόνα, παρά τον στιγμιαίο εκνευρισμό της είχε τις λύσεις για να προηγηθεί 5-4 και μετά το διπλό λάθος από την Ελληνίδα, βρήκε διπλό match point και στη δεύτερη ευκαιρία με winner, πέτυχε το 6-4 και την πρόκριση στα προημιτελικά.
