Valencia – Olympiacos 85-84: They bowed down in the finals and are now running for the top four (video)

Sergio de Larrea made the crucial shots, Evan Fournier missed in the finals and Olympiacos bowed down to Valencia (85-84), resulting in increasing pressure for the top four of the regular season.

After the 92-99 first round loss at SEF, Olympiacos was also defeated in Valencia (85-84) on Tuesday night (24/3) for the 33rd matchday of the EuroLeague regular season.

The Piraeus team fell to 22-12 (14-3 home and 8-9 away), resulting in pressure for the top four that offers home field advantage in the tournament playoffs. Evan Fournier took the last shot, under pressure from mid-range, but found iron.

Valencia went up 21-12 (14-3 home and 7-9 away), with Sergio de Larrea coming in “cold” due to Yan Montero’s new hand injury, making the shots for the final score 2.9″ before the finale and becoming the hero out of nowhere.

The match

With its classic five (Wocap, Dorsey, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, Milutinov) Olympiacos opened the match, seeing its ace deal and its four score in quick succession. He also made a crazy three-pointer for 13-16 in the 7th minute, before Fournier scored in the same way for 15-19. That's where Valencia's reaction came, with the red-and-whites' defense losing its cohesion and the home team easily finding baskets from good partnerships for the 25-23 halftime.

Bartzokas needed something more from Fournier at the beginning of the second, the Frenchman didn't have a good rhythm, but Valencia wasn't throwing fire either. The score remained relatively low, with the Piraeus team improving its assist-turnover ratio and then stepping on the gas. Vezenkov had no opponent, Dorsey made a long shot for 39-48 in the 19th minute and at halftime the more calm team had the lead.

The home team entered the second half with a 7-0 run in two minutes to reduce the deficit to 49-50, with Olympiacos not scoring for seven minutes, but staying close and taking the lead thanks to a solo effort by Ward for 58-59 in the 27th minute. He made a three-pointer for 62-64, with Peters doing the same immediately after for +5, Valencia making a small but amazing counterattack and Walkup writing the 67-69 of the third period at the buzzer.

Fournier became both creator and shooter for 67-74 in the 33rd minute, Jones made 1/2 shots for 75-79 in the 38th minute and Montero 2/3 for 79-79 just before the match entered the last minute. In the 39th minute, Nilikina made a mistake, Valencia made a surprise pass (81-79), Vezenkov tied the score with shots at 45″, Montero scored for 83-81 and Fournier answered with a three-pointer for 83-84. The home team called a timeout, Montero won shots at 2.9″ but was injured and de Larrea went to execute.

Valencia’s youngster made both passes for the pass, Bartzokas took a timeout, the ball went to Fournier and he missed from mid-range on the exhale.

Ο Σέρχιο ντε Λαρέα έβαλε τις κρίσιμες βολές, ο Εβάν Φουρνιέ αστόχησε στο φινάλε κι ο Ολυμπιακός λύγισε στη Βαλένθια (85-84) με αποτέλεσμα να πιέζεται όλο και περισσότερο για την τετράδα της κανονικής περιόδου.

Μετά από το 92-99 του α’ γύρου στο ΣΕΦ, ο Ολυμπιακός ηττήθηκε και στη Βαλένθια (85-84) το βράδυ της Τρίτης (24/3) για την 33η αγωνιστική της κανονικής περιόδου της EuroLeague.

Οι Πειραιώτες έπεσαν στο 22-12 (14-3 εντός και 8-9 εκτός έδρας), με αποτέλεσμα να πιέζονται για την τετράδα που προσφέρει το πλεονέκτημα έδρας στα playoffs της διοργάνωσης. Ο Εβάν Φουρνιέ πήρε το τελευταίο σουτ, υπό πίεση από μέση απόσταση, βρήκε όμως σίδερο.

Στο 21-12 ανέβηκε η Βαλένθια (14-3 εντός και 7-9 εκτός έδρας), με τον Σέρχιο ντε Λαρέα να μπαίνει “κρύος” εξαιτίας του νέου τραυματισμού του Γιαν Μοντέρο στο χέρι, να βάζει τις βολές για το τελικό σκορ στα 2.9″ πριν από το φινάλε και να γίνεται ο ήρωας από το πουθενά.

Ο αγώνας

Με την κλασική του πεντάδα (Γουόκαπ, Ντόρσεϊ, Παπανικολάου, Βεζένκοβ, Μιλουτίνοβ) άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, που είδε τον άσο του να μοιράζει και το τεσσάρι του να σκοράρει κατά ριπάς. Έβαλε κι ένα τρελό τρίποντο για το 13-16 στο 7′, πριν σκοράρει με τον ίδιο τρόπο ο Φουρνιέ για το 15-19. Εκεί ήρθε η αντίδραση της Βαλένθια, με την άμυνα των ερυθρόλευκων να χάνει τη συνοχή της και τους γηπεδούχους να βρίσκουν εύκολα καλάθια από καλές συνεργασίες για το 25-23 της περιόδου.

Ο Μπαρτζώκας χρειαζόταν κάτι περισσότερο από τον Φουρνιέ στις αρχές της δεύτερης, ο Γάλλος δεν είχε καλό ρυθμό, όμως και η Βαλένθια δεν πετούσε φωτιές. Το σκορ έμεινε σχετικά χαμηλά, με τους Πειραιώτες να βελτιώνουν την αναλογία ασίστ-λαθών και στη συνέχεια να πατούν το γκάζι. Ο Βεζένκοβ δεν είχε αντίπαλο, ο Ντόρσεϊ έβαλε μακρινό σουτ για το 39-48 στο 19′ και στο ημίχρονο η πιο ψύχραιμη ομάδα είχε το προβάδισμα.

Οι γηπεδούχοι μπήκαν στο δεύτερο μέρος με σερί 7-0 σε δύο λεπτά για να μειώσουν στο 49-50, με τον Ολυμπιακό να μη βάζει καλάθι για επτά λεπτά, αλλά να μένει κοντά και να περνάει μπροστά χάρη σε ατομική προσπάθεια του Γουορντ για το 58-59 στο 27′. Αυτός έβαλε τρίποντο για το 62-64, με τον Πίτερς να κάνει αμέσως μετά το ίδιο για το +5, τη Βαλένθια να κάνει μια μικρή αλλά εκπληκτική αντεπίθεση και τον Γουόκαπ να γράφει το 67-69 της τρίτης περιόδου at the buzzer.

Ο Φουρνιέ έγινε και δημιουργός και εκτελεστής για το 67-74 στο 33′, ο Τζόουνς έβαλε 1/2 βολές για το 75-79 στο 38′ κι ο Μοντέρο 2/3 για το 79-79 λίγο πριν το ματς μπει στο τελευταίο λεπτό. Στο 39′ ο Νιλικίνα έκανε λάθος, η Βαλένθια έβγαλε αιφνιδιασμό για το προσπέρασμα (81-79), ο Βεζένκοβ ισοφάρισε με βολές στα 45″, ο Μοντέρο σκόραρε για το 83-81 κι ο Φουρνιέ απάντησε με τρίποντο για το 83-84. Οι γηπεδούχοι κάλεσαν timeout, ο Μοντέρο κέρδισε βολές στα 2.9″ αλλά τραυματίστηκε κι ο ντε Λαρέα πήγε να εκτελέσει.

Ο μικρός της Βαλένθια έβαλε και τις δύο για το προσπέρασμα, ο Μπαρτζώκας πήρε timeout, η μπάλα πήγε στον Φουρνιέ κι αυτός αστόχησε από μέση απόσταση στην εκπνοή.
