Fourth consecutive defeat for Sakkari

Maria Sakkari lost in two sets to Karolina Pliskova and said goodbye to the 1000th Madrid title early.

The top Greek tennis player (No.37) was defeated 6-4, 7-6(6) in 91 minutes by the former No.1 tennis player in the world (now No.197) and was eliminated from the third round of the Madrid Open. She has yet to win on clay this year, while this was her fourth consecutive defeat on the tour.

Maria was not at her best and had a hard time finding solutions on the serve, but also on the powerful hits of the experienced Czech. She managed to come back from 4-2 in the second set and push for a complete upset, but Pliskova was calm in the tiebreak and reached the very big victory.

It is the first time since 2018 that the 34-year-old tennis player has reached the third round of the tournament and will find the winner of the match between Elise Mertens and Alex Iala there.

Pliskova came into the match strongly and after two missed opportunities in the third game, she achieved her first break in Maria's next service game and led 3-2.

Serving very well afterwards, she held the lead until the end and laid the foundation for qualification.

When, in fact, she went ahead 3-2 in the second, she dramatically increased her chances of victory, since until that moment Sakkari could not find a way to threaten her serve. She found herself, however, with her first break point at 4-3, "breaking" her opponent and the set was finally decided in a tie-break.

There, Maria scored the first mini-break (0-2), however, Pliskova quickly took it back (2-2) and with another point on the Greek tennis player's serve, she took the lead at 5-3.

Although Sakkari managed to tie the set at 5-5 with two consecutive points and save a match point at 6-5, she received another mini-break at 6-6 and finally "surrendered" to her opponent.

The truth is that after her excellent run in Doha, Maria has lost her way and has suffered four defeats in her last five matches...

And because she was defending her fourth round appearance in Madrid last year, she will have a significant drop in the world ranking and is expected to be outside the Top 45.

Η Μαρία Σάκκαρη έχασε στα δύο σετ από την Καρολίνα Πλίσκοβα και αποχαιρέτησε πρόωρα το 1000άρι της Μαδρίτης.

Η κορυφαία Ελληνίδα τενίστρια (No.37) ηττήθηκε με 6-4, 7-6(6) σε 91 λεπτά από την άλλοτε Νο.1 τενίστρια στον κόσμο (Νο.197 πλέον) και έμεινε εκτός τρίτου γύρου στο Madrid Open. Δεν έχει ακόμα νίκη φέτος στο χώμα, ενώ αυτή ήταν η τέταρτη σερί ήττα της στο tour.

Δεν ήταν στην καλύτερη μέρα της η Μαρία και δυσκολεύτηκε πολύ να βρει λύσεις στο σερβίς, αλλά και στα ισχυρά χτυπήματα της πολύπειρης Τσέχας. Κατάφερε να επιστρέψει από το 4-2 του δεύτερου σετ και να πιέσει για την ολική ανατροπή, όμως η Πλίσκοβα ήταν ψύχραιμη στο τάι μπρέικ και έφτασε στην πολύ μεγάλη νίκη.

Είναι η πρώτη φορά μετά 2018 που η 34χρονη τενίστρια φτάνει στον τρίτο γύρο της διοργάνωσης και θα βρει εκεί τη νικήτρια του ματς ανάμεσα στην Ελίζ Μέρτενς και την Άλεξ Ιάλα.

Η Πλίσκοβα μπήκε δυνατά στον αγώνα και μετά από δύο χαμένες ευκαιρίες στο τρίτο γκέιμ, πέτυχε το πρώτο της μπρέικ στο επόμενο service game της Μαρίας και προηγήθηκε με 3-2.

Σερβίροντας πολύ καλά στη συνέχεια, κράτησε το προβάδισμα μέχρι το τέλος και έβαλε τις βάσεις για την πρόκριση.

Όταν, μάλιστα, πέρασε μπροστά με 3-2 στο δεύτερο, αύξησε κατακόρυφα τις πιθανότητες για τη νίκη, αφού μέχρι εκείνη τη στιγμή η Σάκκαρη δεν μπορούσε να βρει τρόπο να απειλήσει το σερβίς της. Βρέθηκε, ωστόσο, με το πρώτο μπρέικ πόιντ της στο 4-3, «έσπασε» την αντίπαλό της και το σετ κρίθηκε τελικά στο τάι μπρέικ.

Εκεί η Μαρία σημείωσε πρώτη το μίνι μπρέικ (0-2), ωστόσο η Πλίσκοβα το πήρε γρήγορα πίσω (2-2) και με έναν ακόμα πόντο στο σερβίς της Ελληνίδας τενίστριας πήρε κεφάλι με 5-3.

Αν και η Σάκκαρη κατάφερε με δύο σερί πόντους να ισοφαρίσει σε 5-5 και να σώσει ένα ματς πόιντ στο 6-5, δέχτηκε ένα ακόμα μίνι μπρέικ στο 6-6 και τελικά «παραδόθηκε» στην αντίπαλό της.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι μετά την εξαιρετική της πορεία στην Ντόχα, η Μαρία έχει χάσει τον δρόμο της και έχει γνωρίσει τέσσερις ήττες στα τελευταία πέντε ματς της...

Kαι επειδή υπερασπιζόταν στη Μαδρίτη την περσινή παρουσία της στον τέταρτο γύρο, θα έχει σημαντική πτώση στην παγκόσμια κατάταξη και αναμένεται να βρεθεί εκτός Top 45.
