World Cup 2026: FIFA thoughts on new format with 12 groups of four teams

FIFA is already studying the formula for holding the next World Cup to be hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026 and according to the Guardian is considering the "scenario" of forming 12 groups of four teams.

And while the 2022 World Cup in Qatar is underway and entered the knockout phase on Saturday (3/12), FIFA already has its sights set on the next competition.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by three countries, the USA, Canada and Mexico, and the issue of the hosting system has been put on the table, which has not been formalized yet.

The question is how those 48 national teams will be divided in the final phase of the competition, and according to the Guardian, the "scenario" of 12 groups of four teams appears to be gaining ground over the initial call for 16 groups of three teams.

Although there have been debates and considerations, the publication says that FIFA's stance still remains firm on 16 groups, although in Doha the formula with fewer groups is starting to find more and more supporters.

The knockout stage would see the top two teams in each group advance, joined by the eight best third-placed teams to reach the 32, who would face each other in the "32" stage.

Thus, there would be 104 matches and the World Cup would have to last a few more days, an option that would be anything but undesirable for the sponsors and consequently for FIFA.

On the contrary, the groups of four, as was seen in the World Cup in Qatar, are very competitive, as in some of them the first two places were decided in the last matchday.

Η FIFA μελετά ήδη τη φόρμουλα διεξαγωγής του επόμενου Μουντιάλ που θα φιλοξενηθεί σε ΗΠΑ, Καναδά και Μεξικό το 2026 και σύμφωνα με τον Guardian εξετάζει το "σενάριο" σχηματισμού 12 ομίλων των τεσσάρων ομάδων.

Κι ενώ το Μουντιάλ 2022 του Κατάρ βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη και μπήκε το Σάββατο (3/12) στη νοκ-άουτ φάση, η FIFA ήδη έχει στραμμένο το βλέμμα της στην επόμενη διοργάνωση.

Το Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο του 2026, που θα φιλοξενηθεί σε τρεις χώρες, ΗΠΑ, Καναδά και Μεξικό και στο τραπέζι έχει τεθεί το ζήτημα του συστήματος διεξαγωγής, το οποίο δεν έχει επισημοποιηθεί ακόμα.

Το ζήτημα είναι το πώς θα χωριστούν αυτές οι 48 εθνικές ομάδες στην τελική φάση της διοργάνωσης και σύμφωνα με τον Guardian, το "σενάριο" σχηματισμού 12 ομίλων των τεσσάρων ομάδων φαίνεται να κερδίζει έδαφος σε σχέση με τις αρχικές βλέψεις για 16 ομίλους των τριών ομάδων.

Παρότι υπήρξαν συζητήσεις και σκέψεις το δημοσίευμα αναφέρει ότι η στάση της FIFA εξακολουθεί να παραμένει σταθερή για 16 ομίλους, αν και στην Ντόχα η φόρμουλα με λιγότερα γκρουπ αρχίζει να βρίσκει ολοένα και περισσότερους υποστηρικτές.

Στη νοκ άουτ φάση θα προκρίνονταν οι δύο πρώτες ομάδες σε κάθε όμιλο, στις οποίες θα προστεθούν οι οκτώ καλύτερες τρίτες ομάδες για να φτάσουν στις 32, που θα αντιμετωπίσουν η μία την άλλη στη φάση των "32".

Έτσι, θα γίνονταν 104 αγώνες και το Μουντιάλ θα έπρεπε να διαρκέσει λίγες ημέρες παραπάνω, επιλογή που κάθε άλλο παρά ανεπιθύμητη θα ήταν για τους χορηγούς και κατά συνέπεια για τη FIFA.

Αντίθετα, οι όμιλοι των τεσσάρων, όπως φάνηκε και στο Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο του Κατάρ, είναι πολύ ανταγωνιστικοί, καθώς σε κάποιους απ' αυτούς οι δύο πρώτες θέσεις κρίθηκαν την τελευταία αγωνιστική.
