Valencia – Panathinaikos 81-64: The Spaniards in the EuroLeague Final Four, which will not have its host (video)
With three consecutive victories, Valencia came back from 0-2, defeated Panathinaikos (81-64) and qualified for the EuroLeague Final Four to be held at the Telekom Center Athens (22-24/5). Disappointing performance from the greens.
Despite being 0-2, with two home defeats, Valencia proved on Wednesday night (13/5) that it can be considered a rising force in European basketball.
The Spaniards defeated Panathinaikos 81-64 and with three consecutive positive results, they qualified for the EuroLeague Final Four to be held in Athens, at the Telekom Center from 22 to 24 May.
Branco Badio made a great appearance, Taylor, De Larrea, Montero, Ki followed, the defense was at an amazing level and Valencia continues, with the semi-final against Real Madrid in the background, which will be lined up without Eddie Tavares – Alex Len.
Panathinaikos, on the other hand, will be limited to a spectator role in the big tournament that will be held at its stadium.
The greens were confused for another night, Ergin Ataman got into it at half-time with TJ Shorts, Kendrick Nunn was negative, Nigel Hayes-Davies and Matthias Lesor did not help, overall the image of the seven-time European champions was bad.
They scored 10 points in the first quarter and 13 in the second, had a heartbreaking percentage in the half and while in the second half they seemed to find fuel in the tank, mainly thanks to Vasilis Toliopoulos, they came to terms with their fate.
The MVP
Everyone was looking at Yan Montero, but this time Branco Badio was the protagonist. The Senegalese guard did things and wonders in attack and defense, to show all of Europe why Valencia was quick to extend his contract until the summer of 2029. Excellent talent, excellent tool, modern basketball player. 20 points (3/6 two-pointers, 2/7 three-pointers, 8/8 shots), five rebounds, two assists, two steals, all in 27 minutes.
The stats that stood out
The two teams closed the first quarter with 2/16 three-pointers (Valencia 2/9, Panathinaikos 0/7). At halftime, Valencia had 39% on two-pointers and 20% on three-pointers, but even so, they were at +12 because the greens had 9/31 shots and three assists for eight errors. At the end of the night, the shots were 29-8, with Kendrick Nunn having a -2 rating and one assist for six errors (10 for 19 in a row). The points in the surprise were 13-7, with Valencia closing the forty minutes with 40% (14/35).
The match
With Shorts, Nunn, Osman, Hayes-Davis, Farid, Panathinaikos opened the match, which saw its center leave with a knee injury 2:13 after the jump ball. Nunn scored the first points of the greens for 6-2 in the fifth minute, both teams completed fouls early and the defenses played, as expected, the first role. The 14-10 of the period said everything about the inefficiency of both teams (2/9 three-pointers for the home team, 0/7 three-pointers for the away team), but also about their nervousness.
A three-pointer by Montero (19-17 at 13′) kept the home team on their feet early in the second, as Nunn and Osman were starting to wear down with fouls. Key, with shots and a layup, made it 23-17 within a few seconds, before De Larrea nailed it for 27-18. The home team was making one free throw after another, they were 3/15 at 15′, but they also had a good lead because the green team had two assists for six mistakes. The 35-23 halftime score left no room for analysis.
Ataman opened the second half with Toliopoulos, Grigonis, Farid, Badio and Montero kept the gap high (43-26 at 22′), before Toliopoulos took over and reduced it to ten (43-33) with a long-range three-pointer. Grant followed him to reduce it to seven and from there the match changed its image, with Hernangomez hitting a big three-pointer from the corner for 56-50 at the end of the third period.
Prandilla and Rivers kept the home team ahead (61-53 at 32′) at the beginning of the fourth, Thompson hit a huge shot for 66-55 at 34′ after two offensive rebounds by his team and immediately De Larrea hit another one for +14. Lesor fought like a wild horse to keep Panathinaikos in the match, as Nan could not find his hand, but he could not achieve anything more.

Με τρεις σερί νίκες, η Βαλένθια γύρισε από το 0-2, νίκησε τον Παναθηναϊκό (81-64) και προκρίθηκε στο Final Four της EuroLeague που θα διεξαχθεί στο Telekom Center Athens (22-24/5). Απογοητευτική εμφάνιση από τους πράσινους.
Τι κι αν βρέθηκε στο 0-2, με δύο εντός έδρας ήττες, η Βαλένθια απέδειξε το βράδυ της Τετάρτης (13/5) ότι μπορεί να θεωρηθεί μία ανερχόμενη δύναμη στο ευρωπαϊκό μπάσκετ.
Οι Ισπανοί νίκησαν με 81-64 τον Παναθηναϊκό και με τρία σερί θετικά αποτελέσματα, προκρίθηκαν στο Final Four της EuroLeague που θα διεξαχθεί στην Αθήνα, στο Telekom Center από τις 22 έως τις 24 Μαΐου.
Ο Μπράνκου Μπάντιο έκανε μεγάλη εμφάνιση, Τέιλορ, Ντε Λαρέα, Μοντέρο, Κι ακολούθησαν, η άμυνα ήταν σε εκπληκτικό επίπεδο και η Βαλένθια συνεχίζει, με φόντο τον ημιτελικό με τη Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης που θα παραταχθεί χωρίς τους Έντι Ταβάρες – Άλεξ Λεν.
Ο Παναθηναϊκός, από την άλλη, θα περιοριστεί σε ρόλο θεατή στο μεγάλο τουρνουά που θα γίνει στο γήπεδό του.
Οι πράσινοι ήταν για άλλο ένα βράδυ μπερδεμένοι, ο Εργκίν Αταμάν τα έβαλε στο ημίχρονο με τον Τι Τζέι Σορτς, ο Κέντρικ Ναν ήταν αρνητικός, ο Νάιτζελ Χέιζ-Ντέιβις κι ο Ματίας Λεσόρ δεν βοήθησαν, συνολικά η εικόνα των επτά φορές πρωταθλητών Ευρώπης ήταν κακή.
Έβαλαν 10 πόντους στο πρώτο δεκάλεπτο και 13 στο δεύτερο, είχαν αποκαρδιωτικά ποσοστά στο ημίχρονο και ενώ στο δεύτερο μέρος έδειξαν να βρίσκουν καύσιμα στο ντεπόζιτο, κυρίως χάρη στον Βασίλη Τολιόπουλο, συμβιβάστηκαν με την μοίρα τους.
O MVP
Όλοι κοιτούσαν τον Γιαν Μοντέρο, όμως αυτή τη φορά ο Μπράνκου Μπάντιο ήταν ο πρωταγωνιστής. Ο Σενεγαλέζος γκαρντ έκανε πράγματα και θαύματα στην επίθεση και στην άμυνα, για να δείξει σε όλη την Ευρώπη γιατί η Βαλένθια έσπευσε να επεκτείνει το συμβόλαιό του μέχρι το καλοκαίρι του 2029. Εξαιρετικό ταλέντο, εξαιρετικό εργαλείο, μοντέρνος μπασκετμπολίστας. 20 πόντοι (3/6 δίποντα, 2/7 τρίποντα, 8/8 βολές), πέντε ριμπάουντ, δύο ασίστ, δύο κλεψίματα, όλα αυτά σε 27 λεπτά.
Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν
Με 2/16 τρίποντα έκλεισαν το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο οι δύο ομάδες (2/9 η Βαλένθια, 0/7 ο Παναθηναϊκός). Στο ημίχρονο η Βαλένθια είχε 39% στο δίποντο και 20% στο τρίποντο, αλλά ακόμα κι έτσι, βρισκόταν στο +12 επειδή οι πράσινοι μετρούσαν 9/31 σουτ και τρεις ασίστ για οκτώ λάθη. Στο τέλος της βραδιάς οι βολές ήταν 29-8, με τον Κέντρικ Ναν να έχει -2 στην αξιολόγηση και μία ασίστ για έξι λάθη (10 για 19 στη σειρά). 13-7 οι πόντοι στον αιφνιδιασμό, με 40% έκλεισε το σαραντάλεπτο η Βαλένθια (14/35).
Ο αγώνας
Με Σορτς, Ναν, Όσμαν, Χέιζ-Ντέιβις, Φαρίντ άνοιξε το ματς ο Παναθηναϊκός, που είδε τον σέντερ του να αποχωρεί με τραυματισμό στο γόνατο 2:13 μετά από το τζάμπολ. Ο Ναν έβαλε τους πρώτους πόντους των πράσινων για το 6-2 στο πέμπτο λεπτό, οι δύο ομάδες συμπλήρωσαν φάουλ από νωρίς και οι άμυνες έπαιζαν, όπως αναμενόταν, τον πρώτο ρόλο. Το 14-10 της περιόδου τα έλεγε όλα για την αναποτελεσματικότητα των δύο ομάδων (2/9 τρίποντα οι γηπεδούχοι, 0/7 τρίποντα οι φιλοξενούμενοι), αλλά και για την νευρικότητά τους.
Ένα τρίποντο του Μοντέρο (19-17 στο 13′) κράτησε όρθιους τους γηπεδούχους στις αρχές της δεύτερης, καθώς Ναν και Όσμαν είχαν αρχίσει να φθείρονται με φάουλ. Ο Κι με βολές και λέι-απ έγραψε το 23-17 μέσα σε λίγα δευτερόλεπτα, πριν ο Ντε Λαρέα καρφώσει για το 27-18. Οι γηπεδούχοι έβγαζαν το ένα ελεύθερο σουτ πίσω από το άλλο, είχαν 3/15 στο 15′, είχαν όμως και ένα καλό προβάδισμα επειδή οι πράσινοι μετρούσαν δύο ασίστ για έξι λάθη. Το 35-23 του ημιχρόνου, δεν άφηνε περιθώρια για αναλύσεις.
Ο Αταμάν άνοιξε το δεύτερο μέρος με Τολιόπουλο, Γκριγκόνις, Φαρίντ, Μπάντιο και Μοντέρο κράτησαν τη διαφορά ψηλά (43-26 στο 22′), πριν ο Τολιόπουλος πάρει πάνω του φάσεις και μειώσει στους δέκα (43-33) με μακρινό τρίποντο. Ο Γκραντ τον ακολούθησε για να μειώσει στους επτά και από εκεί και πέρα το ματς άλλαξε εικόνα, με τον Ερνανγκόμεθ να βάζει μεγάλο τρίποντο από την γωνία για το 56-50 στο τέλος της τρίτης περιόδου.
Πραντίγια και Ρίβερς κράτησαν τους γηπεδούχους μπροστά (61-53 στο 32′) στις αρχές της τέταρτης, ο Τόμσον έβαλε τεράστιο σουτ για το 66-55 στο 34′ μετά από δύο επιθετικά ριμπάουντ της ομάδας του και αμέσως ο Ντε Λαρέα ευστόχησε σε ακόμη ένα για το +14. Ο Λεσόρ πάλεψε σαν αγρίμι για να κρατήσει τον Παναθηναϊκό στο ματς, καθώς ο Ναν δεν έβρισκε το χέρι του, δεν μπόρεσε όμως να καταφέρει κάτι περισσότερο.
