This year Barcelona and Atletico will meet six times, but history shows that the pair has reached even higher: Two seasons with six matches and one unprecedented season with… eight!

This season brings Barcelona and Atletico Madrid back to one of the most “busy” years in their history. The two teams will meet a total of six times, in La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League, confirming once again that this is the most frequent and “heavy” pair in Spanish football. And yet, as impressive as the number may sound, it is not even a record for the two teams.

History shows that Barcelona and Atletico have met twice before in the same six-game series:

- in 2013-14, when they met in the league, Champions League and Supercopa,

- and in 2015-16, when they crossed paths in La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League.

In both cases, their encounters have defined titles, eliminations and entire seasons, with Atletico eliminating Barcelona from Europe in both seasons.

However, the absolute record remains distant and -as it seems- unrepeatable. In the 1985-86 season, the two teams played eight official games in four different competitions: Two in La Liga, two in the Supercopa de Espana, two in the Copa del Rey and two in the Copa de la Liga (League Cup), a competition that was abolished the same year. This unique coincidence created a record that can no longer be repeated, since the Copa de la Liga has not existed for four decades.

This year, therefore, the six Barcelona-Atletico matches are not just many; they are yet another page in a rivalry that for decades has produced stories, tensions, exclusions and moments that last. And as long as the two teams continue to star in all competitions, the pair seems doomed to meet again and again - often more times than one would expect.

Η φετινή σεζόν φέρνει ξανά την Μπαρτσελόνα και την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης σε μια από τις πιο «φορτωμένες» χρονιές της μεταξύ τους ιστορίας. Οι δύο ομάδες θα αναμετρηθούν συνολικά έξι φορές, σε La Liga, Copa del Rey και Champions League, επιβεβαιώνοντας για ακόμη μία φορά ότι πρόκειται για το πιο συχνό και «βαρύ» ζευγάρι του ισπανικού ποδοσφαίρου. Η ιστορία δείχνει ότι Μπαρτσελόνα και Ατλέτικο έχουν φτάσει άλλες δύο φορές στο ίδιο σύνολο των έξι αναμετρήσεων:

- το 2013-14, όταν συναντήθηκαν σε πρωτάθλημα, Champions League και Supercopa,

- και το 2015-16, όταν διασταυρώθηκαν σε La Liga, Copa del Rey και Champions League.

Και στις δύο περιπτώσεις, οι αναμετρήσεις τους καθόρισαν τίτλους, αποκλεισμούς και ολόκληρες σεζόν, με την Ατλέτικο να αποκλείει την Μπαρτσελόνα στην Ευρώπη και τις δύο χρονιές.

Ωστόσο, το απόλυτο ρεκόρ παραμένει μακρινό και -όπως όλα δείχνουν- ανεπανάληπτο. Τη σεζόν 1985?86, οι δύο ομάδες έπαιξαν οκτώ επίσημα παιχνίδια σε τέσσερις διαφορετικές διοργανώσεις: Δύο στη La Liga, δύο στο Supercopa de Espana, δύο στο Copa del Rey και δύο στο Copa de la Liga (Λίγκ Καπ), μια διοργάνωση που καταργήθηκε την ίδια χρονιά. Αυτή η μοναδική συγκυρία δημιούργησε ένα ρεκόρ που δεν μπορεί πλέον να επαναληφθεί, αφού το Copa de la Liga δεν υπάρχει εδώ και τέσσερις δεκαετίες.
