Greek basketball was plunged into grief as Thanasis Skourtopoulos passed away at the age of 60.

Greek basketball is in mourning as Thanasis Skourtopoulos passed away on Thursday (5/2) at the age of 60, after a heart attack.

In 2018, he took over as head coach of the Greek National Team, leading it to the 2019 Men's Basketball World Cup. He remained at the helm of the blue and white team until 2022, completing his career as a federal coach with a record of 18 wins - 5 losses.

Last summer, Thanasis Skourtopoulos took over the technical leadership of Kuleggud Broncos in Ulaanbaatar, while he had been working abroad since 2023 when he took over Astoria Bydgoszcz in Poland, while he had been on the bench of the Qatar National Team from 2023 to 2024.

Born on May 23, 1965 in Athens, Skourtopoulos played for many years at G.S. Dafniou, AEK, and Pagrati, while he was a member of all the small national teams.

His coaching career began at G.S. Dafniou, which he led for the first time in its history to the national categories. This was followed by stints at Aigaleo and OF Heraklion before taking a position on the technical staff of AEK in 2000, as an assistant to Dusan Ivkovic and then Dragan Sakota and Fotis Katsikaris.

At the Union, Thanasis Skourtopoulos had the team's development program under his supervision and in the five years he was with the yellow and black team, he celebrated the Greek Championship in 2002 and the Greek Cup in 2001.

In 2005, he took over as assistant to Argyris Pedoulakis in the Panhellenic League and the following year he took over A.O. Aigaleo, leading it to the top division for the first time and stayed until 2009.

The 2009-2010 season found him on the General Staff. Peristeri, while in 2011-2012 in the Panhellenic League, which reached the round of 16 of the EuroCup. In 2012 he was at Ikaros Kallithea and in 2012-2013 at Panionios, while the following year he took over the General Manager Keravnos Strovolos in Cyprus.

From 2014 to 2016 he was at AGO Rethymno, while from February 2017 at Apollon Patras. In the 2017–2018 season he took over the General Manager Faros. At the same time, from 2014 to 2017 he worked as an Assistant Coach in the Greek Men's National Team alongside Fotis Katsikaris and then Kostas Missas.

His last stop in Greece was Iraklis, which he took over in 2021.

Στη θλίψη βυθίστηκε το ελληνικό μπάσκετ καθώς ο Θανάσης Σκουρτόπουλος έφυγε από τη ζωή σε ηλικία 60 ετών.

Πένθος για το ελληνικό μπάσκετ, καθώς ο Θανάσης Σκουρτόπουλος έφυγε από τη ζωή την Πέμπτη (5/2) σε ηλικία 60 ετών, έπειτα από καρδιακή προσβολή.

Το 2018 ανέλαβε πρώτος προπονητής της Εθνικής Ελλάδας οδηγώντας την στο Παγκόσμιο Κύπελλο Καλαθοσφαίρισης Ανδρών 2019. Παρέμεινε στο τιμόνι της γαλανόλευκης έως το 2022, ολοκληρώνοντας τη σταδιοδρομία του ως ομοσπονδιακός προπονητής με ρεκόρ 18 νίκες – 5 ήττες.

Το περασμένο καλοκαίρι, ο Θανάσης Σκουρτόπουλος είχε αναλάβει την τεχνική ηγεσία της Κούλεγκουντ Μπρόνκος στο Ουλάν Μπατόρ, ενώ εργαζόταν στο εξωτερικό από το 2023 όταν και είχε αναλάβει την Αστόρια Μπίντγκοζ στην Πολωνία, ενώ είχε βρεθεί στον πάγκο της Εθνικής Κατάρ από το 2023 έως το 2024.

Γεννημένος στις 23 Μαΐου του 1965 στo Αθήνα, ο Σκουρτόπουλος έπαιξε για πολλά χρόνια στην Γ.Σ. Δαφνίου, στην ΑΕΚ, και στο Παγκράτι, ενώ διετέλεσε μέλος όλων των μικρών εθνικών ομάδων.

Η προπονητική του διαδρομή ξεκίνησε από τον Γ.Σ. Δαφνίου, τον οποίο και οδήγησε για πρώτη φορά στην ιστορία του στις εθνικές κατηγορίες. Ακολούθησαν οι σταθμοί στο Αιγάλεω και τον ΟΦ Ηρακλείου προτού πάρει θέση στο τεχνιοκό επιτελείο της ΑΕΚ το 2000, ως βοηθός του Ντούσαν Ίβκοβιτς και μετά του Ντράγκαν Σάκοτα και του Φώτη Κατσικάρη.

Στην Ένωση, ο Θανάσης Σκουρτόπουλος είχε υπό την επίβλεψή του το αναπτυξιακό πρόγραμμα της ομάδας και στα πέντε χρόνια που βρέθηκε στους κιτρινόμαυρους πανηγύρισε το Πρωτάθλημα Ελλάδας το 2002 και το Κύπελλο Ελλάδας το 2001.

Το 2005 ανέλαβε βοηθός του Αργύρη Πεδουλάκη στον Πανελλήνιο και την επόμενη χρονιά ανέλαβε τον Α.Ο. Αιγάλεω οδηγώντας τον για πρώτη φορά στην μεγάλη κατηγορία και έμεινε μέχρι το 2009.

Η σεζόν 2009-2010 τον βρήκε στον Γ.Σ. Περιστερίου, ενώ το 2011-2012 στον Πανελλήνιο που έφτασε μέχρι τους 16 του EuroCup. Το 2012 ήταν στον Ίκαρο Καλλιθέας και το 2012-2013 στον Πανιώνιο, ενώ την επόμενη χρονιά ανλαβε τον Γ.Σ. Κεραυνό Στροβόλου στην Κύπρο.

Από το 2014 έως το 2016 ήταν στον Α.Γ.Ο. Ρεθύμνου, ενώ από τον Φεβρουάριο 2017 στον Απόλλωνα Πατρών. Τη σεζόν 2017–2018 ανέλαβε τον Γ.Σ.Λ. Φάρος. Παράλληλα, από το 2014 έως 2017 εργάστηκε σαν Assistant κόουτς στην Εθνική Ελλάδας Ανδρών στο πλευρό του Φώτη Κατσικάρη και μετά του Κώστα Μίσσα.

Τελευταίος σταθμός του στην Ελλάδα ήταν ο Ηρακλής, τον οποίο ανέλαβε το 2021.
