Villeurbanne – Olympiacos 81-70: Two against all and Fenerbahce is closing in (video)
The duo Fournier – Vezenkov tried to do everything in Lyon, but Olympiacos was defeated by Villeurbanne (81-70) for the 31st matchday of the EuroLeague and saw Fenerbahce closing in on them.
It was not the most qualitative match of the season, it will certainly be forgotten quickly, but Villeurbanne and Olympiacos put up a good fight on Tuesday night (25/3) at the LDLC Arena in Lyon.
In the end, the home team left smiling, as they prevailed 81-70 to break a streak of seven negative results. This was their first victory after two months in the EuroLeague. They improved to 12-19 (9-6 home and 3-13 away), without however aiming for anything more than a pleasant end to the season. Malenton (23 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), De Colo (18 points in 19 minutes) and Sacco (9 points, 7 rebounds) were the leaders for ASVEL. Olympiacos fell to 22-9 (12-3 home and 10-6 away), with Giorgos Bartzokas suffering a second consecutive defeat after last week's defeat by Red Star at SEF. Piraeus returns to its home ground to face Vassilis Spanoulis' Monaco on Thursday (27/3). Fournier (25 points on 20 shots) and Vezenkov (25 points on 12 shots, 10 rebounds, no errors, no fouls in 32 minutes) led the way, Moses Wright played 5:51 in the first half on his return.
MVP
Theo Malenton would be in the MVP discussion if his team was higher in the rankings, even in the top six. The French guard scored 23 points (4/7 two-pointers, 2/5 three-pointers, 9/9 shooting), filled his statistics with five rebounds and five assists, won seven fouls and collected 28 points in the evaluation system in 30:36.
The statistics that stood out
Villeurbanne closed the first quarter with 5/15 shots, 6-14 rebounds for both teams. At halftime, the duo Fournier - Vezenkov had 29 of Olympiacos' 39 points. At the end of the night, the Piraeus team had 9/30 three-pointers and eight missed shots, with Fall having 0/2 two-pointers and 0/4 shots, Papanikolaou 1/5 shots, Peters 0/5 shots, McKissick 1/5 shots and Williams-Goss 1/6.
The match
With Williams-Goss, Fournier, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, Fall, Olympiacos opened the match, with the French peripheral scoring the first seven points of his team before the Bulgarian took the baton to score in a flurry until 14-16 in the -not so qualitative- first period.
Piraeus had trouble scoring at the beginning of the second, they were down -7 (26-19 at 14′) after a three-pointer by Lighty, but Fournier was in terrible shape. Mentally and physically. He took Olympiacos on his back for the comeback (33-32 at 17′), made another basket to overtake (35-36 at 19′) just before halftime, which was signed with a three-pointer for 37-39 at the end by Vezenkov.
Bartzokas opened the second half with his starting five, with Villeurbanne gaining momentum again, along with a small lead. Olympiacos’ attack no longer had the same effectiveness, Fournier had “turned off” Vezenkov was struggling, the peripheral shots were not going into the net. 58-52 at 30′ was fair for both teams.
And when everything looked dark for the visitors, Vezenkov and Fournier came out ahead again (58-59 at 32′), with the Frenchman tying at 65-65, but Villeurbanne responded with a 5-0 run that put them in a favorite position at 36′. Olympiacos' choices were hasty and at the end of the evening, the best team in the forty minutes simply won.

Το δίδυμο Φουρνιέ – Βεζένκοβ προσπάθησε να κάνει τα πάντα στη Λιόν, όμως ο Ολυμπιακός ηττήθηκε από τη Βιλερμπάν (81-70) για την 31η αγωνιστική της EuroLeague και είδε τη Φενέρμπαχτσε να τον πλησιάζει.
Δεν ήταν το πιο ποιοτικό ματς της σεζόν, σίγουρα θα ξεχαστεί γρήγορα, όμως Βιλερμπάν και Ολυμπιακός έδωσαν καλή μάχη το βράδυ της Τρίτης (25/3) στην LDLC Arena της Λιόν.
Στο τέλος χαμογελαστοί έφυγαν οι γηπεδούχοι, καθώς επικράτησαν με 81-70 για να σπάσουν ένα σερί επτά αρνητικών αποτελεσμάτων. Αυτή ήταν η πρώτη τους νίκη μετά από δύο μήνες στη EuroLeague. Ανέβηκαν στο 12-19 (9-6 εντός και 3-13 εκτός έδρας), χωρίς πάντως να στοχεύουν σε κάτι περισσότερο από ένα ευχάριστο φινάλε στη σεζόν. Μάλεντον (23 πόντοι, 5 ριμπάουντ, 5 ασίστ), Ντε Κολό (18 πόντοι σε 19 λεπτά) και Σακό (9 πόντοι, 7 ριμπάουντ) ήταν οι κορυφαίοι για την ASVEL.
Στο 22-9 έπεσε ο Ολυμπιακός (12-3 εντός και 10-6 εκτός έδρας), με τον Γιώργο Μπαρτζώκα να βλέπει δεύτερη σερί ήττα μετά από εκείνη της περασμένης εβδομάδας από τον Ερυθρό Αστέρα στο ΣΕΦ. Οι Πειραιώτες επιστρέφουν στο γήπεδό τους για να αντιμετωπίσουν την Πέμπτη (27/3) τη Μονακό του Βασίλη Σπανούλη. Φουρνιέ (25 πόντοι από 20 σουτ) και Βεζένκοβ (25 πόντοι από 12 σουτ, 10 ριμπάουντ, κανένα λάθος, κανένα φάουλ σε 32 λεπτά) ηγήθηκαν, 5:51 έπαιξε στο πρώτο μέρος ο Μόουζες Ράιτ στην επιστροφή του.
Ο MVP
Ο Τέο Μάλεντον θα βρισκόταν στη συζήτηση για το MVP, αν η ομάδα του ήταν πιο ψηλά στην κατάταξη, έστω στην εξάδα. Ο Γάλλος γκαρντ έβαλε 23 πόντους (4/7 δίποντα, 2/5 τρίποντα, 9/9 βολές), γέμισε τη στατιστική του με πέντε ριμπάουντ και πέντε ασίστ, κέρδισε επτά φάουλ και συγκέντρωσε 28 μονάδες στο σύστημα αξιολόγησης σε 30:36.
Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν
Με 5/15 σουτ έκλεισε το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο η Βιλερμπάν, 6-14 ήταν τα ριμπάουντ για τις δύο ομάδες. Στο ημίχρονο το δίδυμο Φουρνιέ – Βεζένκοβ είχε 29 από τους 39 πόντους του Ολυμπιακού. Στο τέλος της βραδιάς οι Πειραιώτεες είχαν 9/30 τρίποντα και οκτώ άστοχες βολές, με τον Φαλ να έχει 0/2 δίποντα και 0/4 βολές, τον Παπανικολάου 1/5 σουτ, τον Πίτερς 0/5 σουτ, τον ΜακΚίσικ 1/5 σουτ και τον Γουίλιαμς-Γκος 1/6.
Ο αγώνας
Με Γουίλιαμς-Γκος, Φουρνιέ, Παπανικολάου, Βεζένκοβ, Φαλ άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, με τον Γάλλο περιφερειακό να βάζει τους πρώτους επτά πόντους της ομάδας του πριν ο Βούλγαρος πάρει τη σκυτάλη για να σκοράρει κατά ριπάς έως το 14-16 της -όχι και τόσο ποιοτικής- πρώτης περιόδου.
Οι Πειραιώτες είχαν πρόβλημα στο σκοράρισμα στις αρχές της δεύτερης, βρέθηκαν στο -7 (26-19 στο 14′) μετά από τρίποντο του Λάιτι, όμως ο Φουρνιέ ήταν σε τρομερή κατάσταση. Πνευματικά και σωματικά. Πήρε τον Ολυμπιακό στις πλάτες του για την επιστροφή (33-32 στο 17′), έβαλε κι άλλο καλάθι για το προσπέρασμα (35-36 στο 19′) λίγο πριν από το ημίχρονο το οποίο υπέγραψε με τρίποντο για το 37-39 στην εκπνοή ο Βεζένκοβ.
Ο Μπαρτζώκας άνοιξε το β’ μέρος με την αρχική του πεντάδα, με τη Βιλερμπάν να παίρνει ξανά το μομέντουμ, μαζί και ένα μικρό προβάδισμα. Η επίθεση του Ολυμπιακού δεν είχε πια την ίδια αποτελεσματικότητα, ο Φουρνιέ είχε “σβήσει” ο Βεζένκοβ πάλευε, τα περιφερειακά σουτ δεν πήγαιναν στο διχτάκι. Το 58-52 στο 30′ ήταν δίκαιο και για τις δύο ομάδες.
Κι εκεί που όλα έδειχναν σκούρα για τους φιλοξενούμενους, Βεζένκοβ και Φουρνιέ βγήκαν ξανά μπροστά (58-59 στο 32′), με τον Γάλλο να ισοφαρίζει στο 65-65, αλλά τη Βιλερμπάν να απαντάει με σερί 5-0 που την έβαλε σε θέση φαβορί στο 36′. Οι επιλογές του Ολυμπιακού ήταν βιαστικές και στο τέλος της βραδιάς νίκησε απλώς η καλύτερη ομάδα του σαραντάλεπτου.
