Στου Ρέντη, μπροστά σε πολύ κόσμο, οι… μικροί «ερυθρόλευκοι» προηγήθηκαν 2-0 της Σπόρτινγκ Λισαβόνας στο 20', με τα γκολ των Κωστανάσιου (18') και Λάμπρου (20'), αλλά η συνέχεια δεν ήταν ανάλογη, με τους Πορτογάλους να ανεβάζουν την απόδοσή τους, ξεπερνώντας το σοκ. 

Έτσι, μπαίνοντας με το… μαχαίρι στα δόντια στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, τα «λιονταράκια» εκμεταλλεύτηκαν την καθίζηση της ομάδας του Βασίλη Βούζα και με τέρματα των Λουίς Μιγκέλ (47') και Μπάλντε (76') ισοφάρισαν σε 2-2, σκορ που έμεινε ως το φινάλε της αναμέτρησης, με τους φιλοξενούμενους, πάντως, να έχουν τεράστιες ευκαιρίες (και δοκάρι), για να πετύχουν την ολική ανατροπή. 

Στο άλλο ματς του ομίλου του Ολυμπιακού, η Μπαρτσελόνα νίκησε 1-0 τη Γιουβέντους στην Καταλονία, με γκολ του Πέρες στο 84'.
