Μπορεί να μην έφθανε για την εθνική Ουρουγουάης, καθώς αναδείχθηκε ισόπαλη 2-2 στην Μπαρανκίγια με την αντίστοιχη της Κολομβίας αλλά το γκολ του Λουίς Σουάρες ήταν το 19ό του στη διαδικασία προκριματικών Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου, ικανή και αναγκαία συνθήκη  να ισοφαρίσει τον άλλοτε φορ της εθνικής Αργεντινής, Ερνάν Κρέσπο και να τον φέρει στην κορυφή του πίνακα των σκόρερς όλων των εποχών στην προκριματική διαδικασία.
