The Greek Women's National Team began its EuroVolley 2026 campaign with a defeat, as the Czech Republic prevailed 3-1 in a set in Brno, in the opening match of Group B of the competition.

Apostolos Economou's team managed to temporarily equalize, winning the second set, but the host Czech Republic, led by Giannis Athanasopoulos, was in control for most of the match and won.

The "blue and white" team also had to deal with significant absences, as Aristea Tontai did not participate in the mission to Brno, having recently suffered from back problems, while Eufrosini Bakodimou felt discomfort during the warm-up and was unable to compete. At the same time, Papageorgiou, Angelopoulou, Gravari and Tikmanidou made their EuroVolley debuts.

For the Czech Republic, Brandsouka stood out with 23 points, while the contribution of Ghehlarova and Koulisiani was also significant, who scored a total of 26. From the National Team, the top scorer was Gogo Angelopoulou with 17 points, while Martha Anthouli had 16 and Elpida Tikmanidou 12.

The National Team now turns its attention to the second round and the match against Ukraine on Saturday (22/8, 17:00), in an important game for both teams, as both began their obligations in the competition with a defeat.

Group B consists of six teams, with the top four securing qualification to the round of 16.

The match

The Czechs came into the game very strongly. Although Greece took the first point, the home team responded immediately and, putting significant pressure on the Greek reception, took a 7-1 lead and a little later an 11-3 lead. The gap continued to grow, with Mleinkova, Grozer and Koulisiani contributing aggressively for the Czech Republic. The National Team tried to react with two blocks and an ace by Angelopoulou, but without managing to change the picture of the set, which ended in the home team's victory 25-14.

The picture was completely different at the start of the second set. Greece entered determined and took a 4-0 lead, with Anthouli stopping Grozer with a single block. The gap then reached six points (7-1), with the National Team now in control. The Czech Republic responded and came close to 11-8, but the internationals maintained their lead and reached 21-16. The home team responded with a four-point run for 21-20, turning the finale of the set into a derby. Anthouli gave Greece a two-point lead (23-21), while Gravari's block on Mleinkova brought the representative team to set point. The Czech Republic reduced to 24-23, but Tikmanidou finished the next attack and formed 25-23, tying the set at 1-1.

In the third set, the home team returned to the image they had presented at the beginning of the match. The Czech Republic took control early on and did not allow the National Team to follow its rhythm, reaching 25-15 and regaining the lead with 2-1.

The fourth set was more competitive, with the Greek team remaining close to the score and claiming the equalizer. The Czech Republic, however, maintained its lead, got important solutions from its centers and with a place by Grozer, completed the set with 25-20 and the match with 3-1.

Με ήττα ξεκίνησε η Εθνική γυναικών τις υποχρεώσεις της στο EuroVolley 2026, καθώς η Τσεχία επικράτησε με 3-1 σετ στο Μπρνο, στην πρεμιέρα του Β' ομίλου της διοργάνωσης.

Η ομάδα του Απόστολου Οικονόμου κατάφερε να ισοφαρίσει προσωρινά, κατακτώντας το δεύτερο σετ, όμως η οικοδέσποινα Τσεχία του Γιάννη Αθανασόπουλου είχε τον έλεγχο στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της αναμέτρησης και έφτασε στη νίκη.

Η «γαλανόλευκη» είχε να διαχειριστεί και σημαντικές απουσίες, καθώς η Αριστέα Τοντάι δεν ακολούθησε την αποστολή στο Μπρνο, έχοντας ταλαιπωρηθεί το τελευταίο διάστημα από ενοχλήσεις στη μέση, ενώ η Ευφροσύνη Μπακοδήμου αισθάνθηκε ενόχληση στην προθέρμανση και δεν μπόρεσε να αγωνιστεί. Παράλληλα, οι Παπαγεωργίου, Αγγελοπούλου, Γράβαρη και Τικμανίδου έκαναν το ντεμπούτο τους σε EuroVolley.

Για την Τσεχία ξεχώρισε η Μπράντσουκα με 23 πόντους, ενώ σημαντική ήταν και η συνεισφορά των Γεχλάροβα και Κουλισιάνι, οι οποίες πέτυχαν συνολικά 26. Από την Εθνική, πρώτη σκόρερ ήταν η Γωγώ Αγγελοπούλου με 17 πόντους, ενώ η Μάρθα Ανθούλη είχε 16 και η Ελπίδα Τικμανίδου 12.

Η Εθνική στρέφει πλέον την προσοχή της στη δεύτερη αγωνιστική και στην αναμέτρηση με την Ουκρανία το Σάββατο (22/8, 17:00), σε ένα σημαντικό παιχνίδι για τις δύο ομάδες, καθώς αμφότερες ξεκίνησαν τις υποχρεώσεις τους στη διοργάνωση με ήττα.

Ο Β' όμιλος αποτελείται από έξι ομάδες, με τις τέσσερις πρώτες να εξασφαλίζουν την πρόκριση στη φάση των «16».

Το ματς

Οι Τσέχες μπήκαν πολύ δυνατά στο παιχνίδι. Παρότι η Ελλάδα πήρε τον πρώτο πόντο, οι γηπεδούχες απάντησαν άμεσα και, πιέζοντας σημαντικά την ελληνική υποδοχή, προηγήθηκαν με 7-1 και λίγο αργότερα με 11-3. Η διαφορά συνέχισε να αυξάνεται, με τις Μλεΐνκοβα, Γκρόζερ και Κουλισιάνη να συμβάλλουν επιθετικά για την Τσεχία. Η Εθνική προσπάθησε να αντιδράσει με δύο μπλοκ και έναν άσο της Αγγελοπούλου, χωρίς όμως να καταφέρει να αλλάξει την εικόνα του σετ, το οποίο κατέληξε στις γηπεδούχες με 25-14.

Εντελώς διαφορετική ήταν η εικόνα στο ξεκίνημα του δεύτερου σετ. Η Ελλάδα μπήκε αποφασισμένη και προηγήθηκε με 4-0, με την Ανθούλη να σταματά με μονό μπλοκ την Γκρόζερ. Η διαφορά έφτασε στη συνέχεια στους έξι πόντους (7-1), με την Εθνική να έχει πλέον τον έλεγχο. Η Τσεχία αντέδρασε και πλησίασε σε 11-8, όμως οι διεθνείς διατήρησαν το προβάδισμά τους και έφτασαν στο 21-16. Οι γηπεδούχες απάντησαν με σερί τεσσάρων πόντων για το 21-20, μετατρέποντας το φινάλε του σετ σε ντέρμπι. Η Ανθούλη έδωσε στην Ελλάδα προβάδισμα δύο πόντων (23-21), ενώ το μπλοκ της Γράβαρη πάνω στην Μλεΐνκοβα έφερε το αντιπροσωπευτικό συγκρότημα σε σετ πόιντ. Η Τσεχία μείωσε σε 24-23, αλλά η Τικμανίδου τελείωσε την επόμενη επίθεση και διαμόρφωσε το 25-23, ισοφαρίζοντας σε 1-1 σετ.

Στο τρίτο σετ οι γηπεδούχες επέστρεψαν στην εικόνα που είχαν παρουσιάσει στην αρχή της αναμέτρησης. Η Τσεχία πήρε από νωρίς τον έλεγχο και δεν επέτρεψε στην Εθνική να ακολουθήσει τον ρυθμό της, φτάνοντας στο 25-15 και ανακτώντας το προβάδισμα με 2-1.

Πιο ανταγωνιστικό ήταν το τέταρτο σετ, με την ελληνική ομάδα να παραμένει κοντά στο σκορ και να διεκδικεί την ισοφάριση. Η Τσεχία, ωστόσο, διατήρησε το προβάδισμά της, πήρε σημαντικές λύσεις από τις κεντρικές της και με πλασέ της Γκρόζερ ολοκλήρωσε το σετ με 25-20 και την αναμέτρηση με 3-1.
