A new inter-club organization and many changes to the existing ones were decided by LEN

Big changes are coming in polo from next season.

Significant changes in the European inter-club water polo events were decided by LEN, introducing, among other things, a third event for men, called the Challenger Cup, and greatly increasing the "communication" between its events, with several teams switching from one to the other after being excluded.

At the same time, the women's Euroleague is renamed the Champions League, while the LEN Trophy becomes the Women's Euro Cup and acquires an expanded form, although it continues to be not a completely independent organization (teams that are excluded in various stages of the Champions League will participate).

As for the Champions League, next season will be held with the same system and the only difference is that the final-8 will last four days instead of three, giving the finalists a chance to rest between the semifinals and the final. LEN is expected to make significant changes to the top inter-club competition from the 2023-24 season.

The twelve wild cards remain as they were last year, which means that Olympiacos maintains a secure place in the groups, along with Pro Reco (Italy), Novi Beograd (Serbia, secure presence in the final-8 as host), Ferencvaros (Hungary), Barcelona (Spain), Hannover (Germany), Marseille (France), Jug Dubrovnik (Croatia), Radnicki (Serbia), Spandau (Germany), Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia) and Steaua Bucharest (Romania). The remaining four places will be filled through three qualifying rounds, but the eliminated teams will now continue in the other European competitions (until last year, this only applied to the four losers in the third qualifying round).

Thus, from the 1st qualifying round, the excluded teams will continue, either in the Euro Cup qualifiers or in the Challenger Cup (depending on how many teams will register for the Champions League). In the 2nd qualifying round, the system will remain with four groups of four teams, with the first two qualifying and the rest continuing in the Euro Cup qualifiers, while the losers of the 3rd qualifying round advance to the "16" of the Euro Cup.

In the second-ranked event, each country can now declare up to three teams (instead of the two that used to be the case). All participants start from the 1st qualifying round and all eliminated teams continue in the Challenger Cup. The teams from the first two qualifiers of the Champions League are added to the 2nd qualifying round and a total of 12 teams will advance to the "16", where the excluded players of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League will also be included. From the "16" phase, the games are double, until the final, as was already the case.

As for the newly formed Challenger Cup, it will start with a qualifying round, in which the eliminated teams from the other two tournaments will compete, and from which eight clubs will advance to the double quarterfinals. Double matches are also foreseen in the semifinals and the final.

In the women, the Euroleague is renamed the Women's Champions League and will be held as it used to be, with two qualifying rounds (the champions of the countries represented in the previous final-4 start from the second qualifying round) and then double quarterfinals and final-4 , which, however, will have a duration of three days (gap between semifinals and final). Each country has the right to be represented in the event by up to four teams.

The main difference is that the teams that will be eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women's Champions League do not continue in Europe. The new Women's Euro Cup will be held with the participation of the teams that will be excluded in the two qualifying rounds of the Champions League and eight of them will qualify for the quarterfinals. The final-4 is abolished and from the "8" to the final double matches are foreseen.

Έρχονται μεγάλες αλλαγές στο πόλο από την επόμενη σεζόν.

Σημαντικές αλλαγές στις ευρωπαϊκές διασυλλογικές διοργανώσεις της υδατοσφαίρισης αποφάσισε η LEN, εισάγοντας μεταξύ άλλων μία τρίτη διοργάνωση στους άνδρες, με την επωνυμία Challenger Cup, και αυξάνοντας σε πολύ μεγάλο βαθμό την «επικοινωνία» μεταξύ των διοργανώσεών της, με αρκετές ομάδες να μεταπηδούν από τη μία στην άλλη αφότου αποκλειστούν.

Παράλληλα, η γυναικεία Euroleague μετονομάζεται σε Champions League, ενώ το LEN Trophy γίνεται Euro Cup γυναικών και αποκτά διευρυμένη μορφή, αν και συνεχίζει να μην είναι απολύτως ανεξάρτητη διοργάνωση (θα μετέχουν ομάδες που αποκλείονται σε διάφορα στάδια του Champions League).

Σε ό,τι αφορά το Champions League, η επόμενη σεζόν θα διεξαχθεί με το ίδιο σύστημα και μόνη διαφοροποίηση ότι το final-8 θα διαρκεί τέσσερις ημέρες, αντί για τρεις, δίνοντας το περιθώριο ξεκούρασης στις φιναλίστ μεταξύ ημιτελικών και τελικού. Η LEN αναμένεται να προχωρήσει σε σημαντικές αλλαγές στην κορυφαία διασυλλογική διοργάνωση από τη σεζόν 2023-24.

Οι δώδεκα wild cards παραμένουν ως είχαν πέρυσι, όπερ σημαίνει ότι ο Ολυμπιακός διατηρεί εξασφαλισμένη θέση στους ομίλους, μαζί με τις Προ Ρέκο (Ιταλία), Νόβι Μπέογκραντ (Σερβία, σίγουρη παρουσία στο final-8 ως οικοδέσποινα), Φερεντσβάρος (Ουγγαρία), Μπαρτσελονέτα (Ισπανία), Ανόβερο (Γερμανία), Μαρσέιγ (Γαλλία), Γιουγκ Ντουμπρόβνικ (Κροατία), Ραντνίτσκι (Σερβία), Σπαντάου (Γερμανία), Ντιναμό Τιφλίδας (Γεωργία) και Στεάουα Βουκουρεστίου (Ρουμανία). Οι υπόλοιπες τέσσερις θέσεις θα καλυφθούν μέσω τριών προκριματικών γύρων, όπου όμως οι ομάδες που αποκλείονται θα συνεχίζουν πλέον στις άλλες ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις (μέχρι πέρυσι, αυτό ίσχυε μόνο για τις τέσσερις ηττημένες του γ’ προκριματικού).

Έτσι, από τον 1ο προκριματικό οι ομάδες που θα αποκλειστούν θα συνεχίσουν, είτε στα προκριματικά του Euro Cup, είτε στο Challenger Cup (ανάλογα με το πόσες ομάδες θα δηλώσουν συμμετοχή στο Champions League). Στον 2ο προκριματικό γύρο θα παραμείνει το σύστημα με τέσσερις ομίλους των τεσσάρων ομάδων, με τους πρώτους δύο να προκρίνονται και τους υπόλοιπους να συνεχίζουν στα προκριματικά του Euro Cup, ενώ οι ηττημένες του 3ου προκριματικού περνούν στους «16» του Euro Cup.

Στη δεύτερη τη τάξει διοργάνωση, κάθε χώρα μπορεί πλέον να δηλώνει ως και τρεις ομάδες (αντί για δύο που ίσχυε μέχρι τώρα). Όλες οι συμμετέχουσες ξεκινούν από τον 1ο προκριματικό γύρο και όσες ομάδες αποκλείονται συνεχίζουν στο Challenger Cup. Στον 2ο προκριματικό προστίθενται οι ομάδες από τους δύο πρώτους προκριματικούς του Champions League και συνολικά 12 ομάδες θα περάσουν στους «16», όπου θα ενταχθούν και οι αποκλεισμένοι του 3ου προκριματικού του Champions League. Από τη φάση των «16» τα παιχνίδια είναι διπλά, μέχρι και τον τελικό, όπως ήδη ίσχυε.

Σε ό,τι αφορά το νεοσύστατο Challenger Cup, θα αρχίσει με έναν προκριματικό γύρο, στον οποίο θα αγωνιστούν οι αποκλεισμένες ομάδες από τις άλλες δύο διοργανώσεις, και από τον οποίο οκτώ σύλλογοι θα περάσουν στους διπλούς προημιτελικούς. Διπλοί αγώνες προβλέπονται επίσης στους ημιτελικούς και τον τελικό.

Στις γυναίκες, η Euroleague μετονομάζεται σε Champions League γυναικών και θα διεξαχθεί όπως συνέβαινε ως τώρα, με δύο προκριματικούς γύρους (οι πρωταθλήτριες των χωρών που εκπροσωπήθηκαν στο προηγούμενο final-4 ξεκινούν από τον β΄ προκριματικό) και εν συνεχεία διπλούς προημιτελικούς και final-4, το οποίο όμως θα έχει τριήμερη διάρκεια (κενό μεταξύ ημιτελικών και τελικού). Κάθε χώρα έχει δικαίωμα να εκπροσωπηθεί στη διοργάνωση με ως τέσσερις ομάδες.

Βασική διαφορά είναι ότι οι ομάδες που θα αποκλειστούν στα προημιτελικά του γυναικείου Champions League δεν συνεχίζουν στην Ευρώπη. Το νέο Euro Cup γυναικών θα διεξαχθεί με τη συμμετοχή των ομάδων που θα αποκλειστούν στους δύο προκριματικούς γύρους του Champions League και οκτώ εξ αυτών θα προκριθούν στα προημιτελικά. Το final-4 καταργείται και από τους «8» ως τον τελικό προβλέπονται διπλοί αγώνες.
