Premier League: 30% increase in VAR errors
The results of a BBC survey into VAR errors in Premier League matches are worrying.
According to Key Match Incidents (KMI), there has been a 30% increase in errors made in decisions involving VAR intervention in Premier League matches in the first half of the season. Compared to the same period last year, errors have increased from ten to 13.
According to data collected by the “BBC” from the KMI Committee, which meets after each match and consists of five members, three former players and managers, a representative of the Premier League and another from the Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO) organization, 13 cases of observed failures have come to light.
These errors concern various categories, with the most frequent concerning cases of non-intervention, where the VAR should have notified the match referee of an incident. These cases increased from seven to eleven, while incorrect VAR interventions decreased from three to two.
However, the total number of decisions overturned has also decreased, from 57 in the 2024-25 season to 47 this year, a drop of 17.54%. Also recorded were errors by referees on the field that did not reach the threshold of clear and obvious error to justify VAR intervention. These errors increased from twelve to 15.
However, there is still a noticeable improvement compared to previous years, as at the same point in the 2023-24 season there were 20 errors recorded and 23 in the 2022-23 season.

Προβληματίζουν τα αποτελέσματα έρευνας του BBC για τα λάθη του VAR σε αγώνες της Premier League.
Σύμφωνα με το Key Match Incidents (ΚΜΙ), υπήρξε αύξηση 30% στα λάθη που έγιναν σε αποφάσεις με την παρέμβαση του VAR σε αναμετρήσεις της Premier League στο πρώτο μισό της σεζόν. Σε σύγκριση με την αντίστοιχη χρονική περίοδο της περσινής χρονιάς, τα λάθη αυξήθηκαν από δέκα σε 13.
Σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα που σύλλεξε το «BBC» από την Επιτροπή ΚΜΙ, η οποία συνεδριάζει μετά από κάθε αγώνα και αποτελείται από πέντε μέλη, τρεις πρώην παίκτες και προπονητές, έναν εκπρόσωπο της Premier League και έναν ακόμη από τον οργανισμό Professional Game Match Officials (PGMO), ήρθαν στο φως της δημοσιότητας 13 περιπτώσεις που παρατηρήθηκαν αστοχίες.
Αυτά τα λάθη αφορούν διάφορες κατηγορίες, με τη συχνότερη να αφορά περιπτώσεις μη παρέμβασης, όπου το VAR όφειλε να ειδοποιήσει τον διαιτητή του αγώνα για κάποιο περιστατικό. Οι περιπτώσεις αυτές αυξήθηκαν από επτά σε έντεκα, ενώ οι λανθασμένες παρεμβάσεις του VAR μειώθηκαν από τρεις σε δύο.
Ωστόσο, ο συνολικός αριθμός των αποφάσεων που ανατράπηκαν έχει επίσης μειωθεί, από 57 τη σεζόν 2024-25 σε 47 τη φετινή, μια πτώση της τάξης του 17,54%. Επίσης καταγράφηκαν και τα λάθη των διαιτητών εντός αγωνιστικού χώρου που δεν έφτασαν το όριο του σαφούς και προφανούς λάθους, ώστε να δικαιολογείται η παρέμβαση του VAR. Τα λάθη αυτά αυξήθηκαν από δώδεκα σε 15.
Παρόλα αυτά, εξακολουθεί να υπάρχει αισθητή βελτίωση σε σχέση με τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, καθώς στο ίδιο χρονικό σημείο της σεζόν 2023-24 είχαν καταγραφεί 20 λάθη και 23 τη σεζόν 2022-23.
