Anadolu Efes – Olympiacos 68-74: Pale in the second, but professional in Istanbul (video)

In the first half, it was flying, in the second it did the job. Olympiacos did not shine in Istanbul, but easily defeated Anadolu Efes (74-68) for the seventh positive result in the last eight games in the EuroLeague.

The first twenty minutes were magical, the second problematic, but at the end of the day, the result mattered for Olympiacos.

Piraeus defeated Anadolu Efes in Istanbul (78-64) for the 24th matchday of the EuroLeague and rose to 15-8 (8-3 home and 7-5 away), with Giorgos Bartzokas covering for the absences of Monte Morris, Frank Nilikina, Nikola Milutinov and taking a lot from many.

Sasha Vezenkov was the spearhead (19 points in 25 minutes), Donda Hall and Evan Fournier had good intervals, Tyreek Jones had 2/8 shots, but he helped a lot on defense and Thomas Walkup shared nine assists playing “heavy” minutes in the finale of the double week.

Anadolu Efes fell to 6-18 (3-10 home and 3-8 away), with Pablo Lasso watching his team lose for the eighth consecutive match. PJ Dozier was the one who wanted the match the most, Shaiben Lee was positive, but did not do any damage to his former team, Larkin, Lloyd, Poirier, Papagiannis watched as spectators.

MVP

Sasha Vezenkov was Olympiacos' top scorer again (19 points in 26 minutes), but Thomas Walkap deserves a round of applause for hitting the big three-pointer for 61-67 and closing the forty-minute period with nine assists for one mistake in 33 minutes.

The statistics that stood out

Efes closed the first quarter with 13 points, Vezenkov closed it with 12. At halftime, Olympiacos had given ten players from seven to 13 minutes, shot 65% from two-point range and 50% from three-point range, had 12 assists for three mistakes. The red-and-whites scored two two-pointers in the third quarter (they lost 20-10), and they scored one three-pointer throughout the second half. They finished the match with 63.3% shooting, but had 20 assists for 10 turnovers and were solid on defense to get the result. 12-3 points in the surprise.

The match

With Walkup, Dorsey, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, Jones, Olympiacos opened the match, with Dorsey making 2/2 three-pointers for 0-8 in the 2nd minute and Vezenkov making a goal-foul for 7-14 in the 6th minute. Hall and Fournier were the first to get off the bench, the 13-25 score of the first period was pleasant, even ideal.

Bartzokas entered the second with McKissick – Fournier at the guards, Hall finished phases close to the basket (19-31 in the 12th minute and 26-37 in the 16th minute) and the Piraeus team kept the home team at a distance. They were not threatened, they had a problem with defensive rebounding, but Efes's failure was increasingly disappointing. The 31-48 halftime score said it all about the image of the two teams.

Olympiacos suffered a lot with fouls at the beginning of the second half, but even so and despite the fact that they wasted shots, they kept Efes at a distance (38-50 at 23′). But not for long. Dozier and Osmani reduced the lead to five (45-50 at 25′), with Ward making a nice basket for 47-56 at 28′ and keeping the Turks at bay until the end of the third period (51-58).

With consecutive baskets by Weiler-Bam, Efes reduced the lead to five (55-60) at the beginning of the fourth, with Dorsey answering midway through with a difficult basket for +7 and Lee scoring five in a row for 61-63 at 35′. Walkup scored Olympiacos’ first three-pointer in the second half for 61-67 at 37′, Vezenkov scored with a floater for 61-69 and Piraeus locked the result without any further problems.

Στο πρώτο μέρος πετούσε, στο δεύτερο έκανε τη δουλειά. Ο Ολυμπιακός δεν έλαμψε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, νίκησε όμως εύκολα την Αναντολού Εφές (74-68) για το έβδομο θετικό αποτέλεσμα στα τελευταία οκτώ παιχνίδια στη EuroLeague.

Το πρώτο εικοσάλεπτο ήταν μαγικό, το δεύτερο προβληματικό, στο τέλος της ημέρας όμως σημασία είχε για τον Ολυμπιακό το αποτέλεσμα.

Οι Πειραιώτες νίκησαν την Αναντολού Εφές στην Κωνσταντινούπολη (78-64) για την 24η αγωνιστική της EuroLeague και ανέβηκαν στο 15-8 (8-3 εντός και 7-5 εκτός έδρας), με τον Γιώργο Μπαρτζώκα να καλύπτει τις απουσίες των Μόντε Μόρις, Φρανκ Νιλικίνα, Νίκολα Μιλουτίνοβ και να παίρνει πολλά από πολλούς.

Ο Σάσα Βεζένκοβ ήταν η αιχμή του δόρατος (19 πόντοι σε 25 λεπτά), ο Ντόντα Χολ κι ο Εβάν Φουρνιέ είχαν καλά διαστήματα, ο Ταϊρίκ Τζόουνς είχε 2/8 βολές, αλλά βοήθησε πολύ στην άμυνα κι ο Τόμας Γουόκαπ μοίρασε εννέα ασίστ παίζοντας “βαριά” λεπτά στο φινάλε της διπλής εβδομάδας.

Στο 6-18 έπεσε η Αναντολού Εφές (3-10 εντός και 3-8 εκτός έδρας), με τον Πάμπλο Λάσο να βλέπει την ομάδα του να χάνει για όγδοη συνεχόμενη αγωνιστική. Ο Πι Τζέι Ντόζιερ ήταν αυτός που ήθελε περισσότερο το ματς, ο Σέιμπεν Λι ήταν θετικός, αλλά δεν έκανε ζημιά στην πρώην ομάδα του, Λάρκιν, Λόιντ, Πουαριέ, Παπαγιάννης παρακολούθησαν ως θεατές.

Ο MVP

Ο Σάσα Βεζένκοβ ήταν ξανά ο κορυφαίος του Ολυμπιακού (19 πόντοι σε 26 λεπτά), όμως αξίζει ένα χειροκρότημα ο Τόμας Γουόκαπ που έβαλε το μεγάλο τρίποντο για το 61-67 και έκλεισε το σαραντάλεπτο με εννέα ασίστ για ένα λάθος σε 33 λεπτά.

Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν

Με 13 πόντους έκλεισε το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο η Εφές, με 12 το έκλεισε ο Βεζένκοβ. Στο ημίχρονο ο Ολυμπιακός είχε δώσει από επτά έως 13 λεπτά σε δέκα παίκτες, σούταρε με 65% στο δίποντο και με 50% στο τρίποντο, είχε 12 ασίστ για τρία λάθη. Δύο δίποντα πέτυχαν οι ερυθρόλευκοι στο τρίτο δεκάλεπτο (το έχασαν με 20-10), ένα τρίποντο πέτυχαν σε όλο το δεύτερο μέρος. Τελείωσαν το ματς με 63.3% στις βολές, είχαν όμως 20 ασίστ για 10 λάθη και ήταν συμπαγείς στην άμυνα για να φτάσουν στο αποτέλεσμα. 12-3 οι πόντοι στον αιφνιδιασμό. 

Ο αγώνας

Με Γουόκαπ, Ντόρσεϊ, Παπανικολάου, Βεζένκοβ, Τζόουνς άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, με τον Ντόρσεϊ να βάζει 2/2 τρίποντα για το 0-8 στο 2′ και τον Βεζένκοβ γκολ-φάουλ για το 7-14 στο 6′. Χολ και Φουρνιέ ήταν οι πρώτοι που σηκώθηκαν από τον πάγκο, το 13-25 της πρώτης περιόδου ήταν ευχάριστο, έως και ιδανικό.

Ο Μπαρτζώκας μπήκε στη δεύτερη με ΜακΚίσικ – Φουρνιέ στα γκαρντ, ο Χολ τελείωσε φάσεις κοντά στο καλάθι (19-31 στο 12′ και 26-37 στο 16′) και οι Πειραιώτες κράτησαν τους γηπεδούχους σε απόσταση. Δεν απειλήθηκαν, είχαν πρόβλημα στο αμυντικό ριμπάουντ, όμως η αστοχία της Εφές την απογοήτευε όλο και περισσότερο. Το 31-48 του ημιχρόνου τα έλεγε όλα για την εικόνα των δύο ομάδων.

Ο Ολυμπιακός είχε μεγάλη φθορά με φάουλ στις αρχές του β’ μέρους, ακόμη κι έτσι όμως και παρά το γεγονός ότι σπατάλησε βολές, κράτησε την Εφές σε απόσταση (38-50 στο 23′). Όχι όμως για πολύ. Ντόζιερ και Οσμάνι μείωσαν στους πέντε (45-50 στο 25′), με τον Γουορντ να βάζει ωραίο καλάθι για το 47-56 στο 28′ και να κρατάει τους Τούρκους μακριά μέχρι το τέλος της τρίτης περιόδου (51-58).

Με σερί καλάθια του Γουάιλερ-Μπαμ η Εφές μείωσε και στους πέντε (55-60) στις αρχές της τέταρτης, με τον Ντόρσεϊ να απαντάει μέσως μετά με δύσκολο καλάθι για το +7 και τον Λι να βάζει πέντε σερί για το 61-63 στο 35′. Ο Γουόκαπ έβαλε το πρώτο τρίποντο του Ολυμπιακού στο δεύτερο μέρος για το 61-67 στο 37′, ο Βεζένκοβ σκόραρε με φλότερ για το 61-69 και οι Πειραιώτες κλείδωσαν το αποτέλεσμα χωρίς άλλα προβλήματα.
