Positive atmosphere at the FIBA ​​- Euroleague meeting in Geneva

The first meeting between FIBA ​​- Euroleague was fruitful even though the differences were not definitively resolved. It was a discussion that had fertile ground with IMG also present.

In Geneva and at the offices of the world federation, the three bodies of basketball, namely FIBA, Euroleague and NBA, met in a very good atmosphere, laying the foundations for a new beginning in European basketball and putting aside (for the time being) all the major differences that had been observed in the previous period.

Panathinaikos was represented by the members of the Board of Directors, Giorgos Athanasiou and Margarita Thanou, while Olympiacos was represented by the General Manager, Nikos Lepeniotis, while representatives of most of the Euroleague teams were also present.

FIBA was represented by Secretary General Andreas Zaglis, FIBA ​​Europe President Jorge Garbajosa and FIBA ​​Europe Executive Director Kamil Novak, while the NBA was represented by the League’s Managing Director for Europe and the Middle East, Giorgos Aivazoglou. IMG, which remains by the side of the EuroLeague as its global sports marketing agency until 2036, was also present.

The meeting, which was held at the initiative of FIBA ​​and aimed at the unity of all parties, raised many issues for European and not only basketball. There was also talk of the Euroleague Final Four in Abu Dhabi with its expansion outside European borders, a tactic that the NBA has embraced in recent years, which is naturally willing to help and push forward positive discussions.

The cooperation of all bodies and unity for the good of basketball, the progress and development of the sport in all areas, even non-competitive ones, were the dominant topics of discussion, with the factors of all three sides converging towards the final settlement and solution of all the differences that have existed in previous years.

Το πρώτο ραντεβού ανάμεσα σε FIBA - Euroleague είχε αποτέλεσμα παρότι οι διαφορές δεν λύθηκαν οριστικά. Ήταν μια συζήτηση που είχε γόνιμο έδαφος με παρούσα και την IMG.

Στη Γενεύη και στα γραφεία της παγκόσμιας ομοσπονδίας οι τρεις φορείς του μπασκετικού γίγνεσθαι, δηλαδή η FIBA, η Euroleague και το ΝΒΑ συναντήθηκαν μέσα σε πολύ καλό κλίμα, θέτοντας τις βάσεις για μια νέα αρχή στο ευρωπαϊκό μπάσκετ και βάζοντας (προς το παρόν) στο περιθώριο τις όσες και μεγάλες διαφορές είχαν παρατηρηθεί το προηγούμενο χρονικό διάστημα.

Την ΚΑΕ Παναθηναϊκός εκπροσώπησαν τα μέλη του Δ.Σ., Γιώργος Αθανασίου και Μαργαρίτα Θάνου ενώ την ΚΑΕ Ολυμπιακός εκπροσώπησε ο Γενικός Διευθυντής, Νίκος Λεπενιώτης, ενώ το παρών έδωσαν και εκπρόσωποι των περισσότερων ομάδων της Euroleague. 

H FIBA εκπροσωπήθηκε από τον Γενικό Γραμματέα, Ανδρέα Ζαγκλή, από τον Πρόεδρο της FIBA Europe, Χόρχε Γκαρμπαχόσα και τον Εκτελεστικό Διευθυντή της FIBA Europe, Καμίλ Νόβακ, ενώ το ΝΒΑ από τον Managing Director της Λίγκας σε Ευρώπη και Μέση Ανατολή, Γιώργο Αϊβάζογλου. Παρούσα και η IMG, που παραμένει στο πλευρό της EuroLeague ως global sports marketing agency της έως το 2036.

Στη συνάντηση, που έγινε με πρωτοβουλία της FIBA και στόχο την ενότητα όλων των πλευρών, τέθηκαν πολλά ζητήματα για το ευρωπαϊκό και όχι μόνο μπάσκετ. Έγινε κουβέντα και για το Final Four της Euroleague στο Άμπου Ντάμπι με την επέκτασή του εκτός ευρωπαϊκών συνόρων, τακτική που αγκαλιάζει τα τελευταία χρόνια το ΝΒΑ, το οποίο είναι φυσικά πρόθυμο να βοηθήσει και να ωθήσει τις θετικές συζητήσεις.

Η συνεργασία όλων των φορέων και η ενότητα για το καλό του μπάσκετ, την πρόοδο και εξέλιξη του αθλήματος σε όλους τους τομείς, ακόμα και εξωαγωνιστικούς ήταν τα κυρίαρχα θέματα συζήτησης, με τους παράγοντες και των τριών πλευρών να συγκλίνουν προς την οριστική διευθέτηση και λύση όσων διαφορών υπήρξαν τα προηγούμενα χρόνια.
