Arsene Wenger has proposed abolishing the rule that allows any team that wins the Europa League to secure its participation in the top club competition.

As head of global football development for FIFA, legendary former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has from time to time proposed several rule changes for the sake of improving the game.

This time, Wenger suggested that it would be better if the team that wins the Europa League did not also secure its participation in the Champions League for the next season, stressing that the regulation - which came into force in 2016 and provides a better European ticket for the winner - should be abolished.

The statements in detail:

“The winners of the Europa League should qualify automatically for the next competition, but not necessarily for the Champions League. This is particularly important for the Premier League, where five teams have already done so, regardless. I think UEFA should reflect and analyse this issue.

On the other hand, there will certainly be those who will argue that, in order to maintain attention, interest and motivation in the Europa League, the winners need an additional reward in the form of qualification for the Champions League,” said Wenger.

Ο Αρσέν Βενγκέρ πρότεινε να καταργηθεί ο κανόνας που επιτρέπει σε όποια ομάδα κατακτήσει το Europa League να εξασφαλίσει τη συμμετοχή της στην κορυφαία διασυλλογική διοργάνωση.

Ως επικεφαλής της παγκόσμιας ανάπτυξης του ποδοσφαίρου για λογαριασμό της FIFA, ο θρυλικός άλλοτε προπονητής της Άρσεναλ, Αρσέν Βενγκέρ, έχει κατά διαστήματα προτείνει αρκετές αλλαγές κανονισμών για χάρη της βελτίωσης του αθλήματος.

Αυτή τη φορά, ο Βενγκέρ πρότεινε πως θα θα ήταν καλύτερο αν η ομάδα που κατακτά το Europa League δεν εξασφαλίζει παράλληλα τη συμμετοχή της στο Champions League της επόμενης περιόδου, τονίζοντας πως ο κανονισμός -που τέθηκε σε ισχύ το 2016 και προβλέπει καλύτερο ευρωπαϊκό εισιτήριο για τον νικητή- πρέπει να καταργηθεί.

Αναλυτικά οι δηλώσεις: 

“Οι νικητές του Europa League θα πρέπει να προκρίνονται αυτόματα στην επόμενη διοργάνωση, αλλά όχι απαραίτητα στο Champions League. Αυτό είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό για την Premier League, όπου πέντε ομάδες το έχουν ήδη καταφέρει, ανεξάρτητα από αυτό. Νομίζω ότι η UEFA θα πρέπει να προβληματιστεί και να αναλύσει αυτό το θέμα.

Από την άλλη πλευρά, σίγουρα θα υπάρξουν εκείνοι που θα υποστηρίξουν ότι, για να διατηρηθεί η προσοχή, το ενδιαφέρον και το κίνητρο στο Europa League, οι νικητές χρειάζονται μια επιπλέον ανταμοιβή με τη μορφή της πρόκρισης στο Champions League”, δήλωσε ο Βενγκέρ.
