Zalgiris – Olympiacos 99-94: They bowed out in a thriller of two overtimes (video)

A crazy match in Kaunas on Wednesday night (2/25), with the injured Olympiacos holding on thanks to the great Evan Fournier (career record with 32 points), but bowing out in the second overtime by Zalgiris (99-94).

The absences were significant, Olympiacos put up a huge fight, but in the end they bowed out in Kaunas.

The Piraeus team was defeated on Wednesday night (2/25) in the second overtime by Zalgiris (99-94), in the match for the 29th round of the EuroLeague, with Giorgos Bartzokas seeing stubbornness, but not a clear mind that would have helped the result.

The red and whites fell to 18-10 (11-3 home and 7-7 away), with Evan Fournier setting a career record (32 points in 32 minutes), with Tyreke Jones doing wonders (14 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block in 25 minutes), but also with Tyler Dorsey closing the game with 7/19 shots on a night when Sasha Vezenkov – (third scorer, third rebounder, first in rating in the EuroLeague) – Nikola Milutinov (first rebounder, second in rating in the EuroLeague) were sorely missed.

The Lithuanians (10-4 home and 7-8 away) rose to 17-12, continuing their dream of making the top six and directly qualifying for the playoffs. Nigel Williams-Goss (who caught fire in the second overtime) and Sylvain Francisco finished the game with 23 points, while Moses Wright (14 points, 13 rebounds) had an impressive double-double.

The MVP

Nigel Williams-Goss (23 points in 34 minutes) and Sylvain Francisco (23 points, 7 assists in 43 minutes) share the award. The latter had 36 points in the evaluation, the former scored nine points in the second overtime against his former team. Both had a great game.

The statistics that stood out

Papanikolaou played just seven minutes on the night Vezenkov was out. Walkup finished the game with 2/9 shots, Dorsey finished with 7/19, Peters, who knew Olympiacos needed him, shot 2/11, but also wrote a negative rating (-2) at 34:15. Piraeus had 44.8% from two-point range and 9/30 from three-point range, with 24 assists for 14 turnovers.

The game

With Walkup, Dorsey, Ward, Peters, Jones, Olympiacos opened the game, getting a lot from their center, but saw their ace commit two fouls in the first four minutes. Piraeus did not waste possession until the TV timeout (11-13 at 6′), the finale of the period found the two teams tied (18-18), with the home team having five assists for five turnovers and Bartzokas looking for doubles and triples for better partnerships.

With Fournier taking turns at the beginning of the second and scoring in a flurry, Olympiacos built a nine-point lead (29-20 at 14′) as its run reached 11-0. Zalgiris responded to the tie (31-31 at 17′) with a three-point barrage, as Piraeus tried to survive with Joseph – McKissick together on the floor. Jones kept his team ahead with a goal-foul and at halftime (37-39) the American was the one who stood out (9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block).

Ward opened the second half with a goal-foul for +5 (42-37), Jones continued to dominate in all areas of the game, Walkup made a three-pointer for 41-51 in the 23rd minute and Olympiacos kept the hosts at bay. No matter how hard they fought, Zalgiris could not play high-level basketball. Nilikina made a great three-pointer for 51-60 in the final period, a shot that seemed to have much more value at this point in the match.

Fournier made it 51-62 at the start of the fourth and that's when Zalgiris responded. With a 10-0 run, they reduced the lead to 61-62 thanks to a basket by Brazdeikis from the corner, for Fournier to answer with a three-pointer and add another for 63-69, with an imperial execution in the 36th minute. The Frenchman scored again for 69-71, after a series of three-pointers by Williams-Goss, but the home team had found a rhythm and Law put them ahead (73-71) with shots in the 90th minute.

Fournier wasted possessions, had a bad three-pointer, but Jones was there to score for the tie (73-73) at 26.9″. Francisco missed under the pressure of Walkup – Jones, Fournier brought the ball down, did not execute and the match went to overtime. There Dorsey made two big baskets, Francisco answered with a three-pointer for 80-78 at 43′ and immediately after made shots for +4. Olympiacos did not give up, tied with Fournier and Dorsey at 39.8″ and the thriller continued.

Wright missed a three-pointer, Piraeus had the last possession, Dorsey missed from the three-pointer and the match went to the second overtime. A two-pointer by Peters and a three-pointer by Fournier made it 82-87, but from then on, no one found a way to stop Williams-Goss who scored in quick succession to win the match.

Τρελό ματς στο Κάουνας το βράδυ της Τετάρτης (25/2), με τον λαβωμένο Ολυμπιακό να αντέχει χάρη στον σπουδαίο Εβάν Φουρνιέ (ρεκόρ καριέρας με 32 πόντους), αλλά να λυγίζει στη δεύτερη παράταση από τη Ζάλγκιρις (99-94).

Οι απουσίες ήταν σημαντικές, ο Ολυμπιακός έδωσε τεράστια μάχη, στο τέλος όμως λύγισε στο Κάουνας.

Οι Πειραιώτες ηττήθηκαν το βράδυ της Τετάρτης (25/2) στη δεύτερη παράταση από τη Ζάλγκιρις (99-94), στον αγώνα για την 29η αγωνιστική της EuroLeague, με τον Γιώργο Μπαρτζώκα να βλέπει πείσμα, όχι όμως και καθαρό μυαλό που θα βοηθούσε για το αποτέλεσμα.

Στο 18-10 έπεσαν οι ερυθρόλευκοι (11-3 εντός και 7-7 εκτός έδρας), με τον Εβάν Φουρνιέ να κάνει ρεκόρ καριέρας (32 πόντοι σε 32 λεπτά), με τον Ταϊρίκ Τζόουνς να κάνει πράγματα και θαύματα (14 πόντοι, 7 ριμπάουντ, 6 ασίστ, 2 κλεψίματα, 1 μπλοκ σε 25 λεπτά), αλλά και με τον Τάιλερ Ντόρσεϊ να κλείνει τον αγώνα με 7/19 σουτ το βράδυ που οι Σάσα Βεζένκοβ – (τρίτος σκόρερ, τρίτος ριμπάουντερ, πρώτος σε αξιολόγηση στη EuroLeague) – Νίκολα Μιλουτίνοβ (πρώτος ριμπάουντερ, δεύτερος σε αξιολόγηση στη EuroLeague) έλειψαν πολύ.

Στο 17-12 ανέβηκαν οι Λιθουανοί (10-4 εντός και 7-8 εκτός έδρας) που συνεχίζουν να ονειρεύονται την εξάδα και την απευθείας πρόκριση στα playoffs της διοργάνωσης. Με 23 πόντους έκλεισαν τον αγώνα ο Νάιτζελ Γουίλιαμς-Γκος (πήρε φωτιά στη δεύτερη παράταση) και ο Σιλβέν Φρανσίσκο, εντυπωσιακό double-double είχε ο Μόουζες Ράιτ (14 πόντοι, 13 ριμπάουντ).

Ο MVP

Νάιτζελ Γουίλιαμς-Γκος (23 πόντοι σε 34 λεπτά) και Σιλβέν Φρανσίσκο (23 πόντοι, 7 ασίστ σε 43 λεπτά) μοιράζονται το βραβείο. Ο δεύτερος είχε 36 μονάδες στην αξιολόγηση, ο πρώτος έβαλε εννέα πόντους στη δεύτερη παράταση απέναντι στην πρώην ομάδα του. Έκαναν μεγάλο ματς και οι δύο.

Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν

Μόλις επτά λεπτά έπαιξε ο Παπανικολάου το βράδυ που έλειψε ο Βεζένκοβ. Με 2/9 σουτ έκλεισε τον αγώνα ο Γουόκαπ, με 7/19 τον έκλεισε ο Ντόρσεϊ, με 2/11 ο Πίτερς που ήξερε ότι ο Ολυμπιακός τον είχε ανάγκη, αλλά έγραψε και αρνητική αξιολόγηση (-2) σε 34:15. Οι Πειραιώτες είχαν 44.8% στο δίποντο και 9/30 τρίποντα, με 24 ασίστ για 14 λάθη.

Ο αγώνας

Με Γουόκαπ, Ντόρσεϊ, Γουορντ, Πίτερς, Τζόουνς άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, που πήρε πολλά από τον σέντερ του, αλλά είδε τον άσο του να κάνει δύο φάουλ στο πρώτο τετράλεπτο. Οι Πειραιώτες δεν σπατάλησαν κατοχή μέχρι το τηλεοπτικό timeout (11-13 στο 6′), το φινάλε της περιόδου βρήκε τις δύο ομάδες στα ίσα (18-18), με τους γηπεδούχους να έχουν πέντε ασίστ για πέντε λάθη και τον Μπαρτζώκα να ψάχνει δίδυμα-τρίδυμα για καλύτερες συνεργασίες.

Με τον Φουρνιέ να παίρνει φάσεις στις αρχές της δεύτερης και να σκοράρει κατά ριπάς, ο Ολυμπιακός έχτισε ένα προβάδισμα εννέα πόντων (29-20 στο 14′) καθώς έφτανε το σερί του στο 11-0. Η Ζάλγκιρις απάντησε για την ισοφάριση (31-31 στο 17′) με μπαράζ τριπόντων, καθώς οι Πειραιώτες προσπαθούσαν να επιβιώσουν με Τζόσεφ – ΜακΚίσικ μαζί στο παρκέ. Ο Τζόουνς με γκολ-φάουλ κράτησε την ομάδα του μπροστά και στο ημίχρονο (37-39) ο Αμερικανός ήταν αυτός που ξεχώριζε (9 πόντοι, 5 ριμπάουντ, 3 ασίστ, 2 κλεψίματα, 1 μπλοκ).

Ο Γουορντ άνοιξε το β’ μέρος με γκολ-φάουλ για το +5 (42-37), ο Τζόουνς συνέχισε να κυριαρχεί σε όλους τους τομείς του παιχνιδιού, ο Γουόκαπ έβαλε τρίποντο για το 41-51 στο 23′ κι ο Ολυμπιακός κράτησε τους γηπεδούχους σε απόσταση. Όσο κι αν πάλευε, η Ζάλγκιρις δεν μπορούσε να παίξει μπάσκετ υψηλού επιπέδου. Ο Νιλικίνα έβαλε μεγάλο τρίποντο για το 51-60 στο φινάλε της περιόδου, ένα σουτ που έμοιαζε να έχει πολύ μεγαλύτερη αξία σε αυτό το σημείο της αναμέτρησης.

Ο Φουρνιέ έγραψε το 51-62 στο ξεκίνημα της τέταρτης και εκεί ήρθε η απάντηση της Ζάλγκιρις. Με ένα 10-0 μείωσε στο 61-62 χάρη σε καλάθι του Μπραζντέικις από τη γωνία, για να απαντήσει με τρίποντο ο Φουρνιέ και να βάλει κι άλλο για το 63-69, με αυτοκρατορική εκτέλεση στο 36′. Ο Γάλλος ξανασκόραρε για το 69-71, μετά από σερί τρίποντα του Γουίλιαμς-Γκος, όμως οι γηπεδούχοι είχαν βρει ρυθμό και ο Λο τους έβαλε μπροστά (73-71) με βολές στα 90″. 

Ο Φουρνιέ σπατάλησε κατοχές, είχε ένα κακό τρίποντο, όμως ο Τζόουνς ήταν εκεί για να σκοράρει για την ισοπαλία (73-73) στα 26.9″. Ο Φρανσίσκο αστόχησε υπό την πίεση των Γουόκαπ – Τζόουνς, ο Φουρνιέ κατέβασε τη μπάλα, δεν εκτέλεσε και το ματς πήγε στην παράταση. Εκεί ο Ντόρσεϊ έβαλε δύο μεγάλα καλάθια, ο Φρανσίσκο απάντησε με τρίποντο για το 80-78 στο 43′ και αμέσως μετά έβαλε και βολές για το +4. Ο Ολυμπιακός δεν τα παράτησε, ισοφάρισε με Φουρνιέ και Ντόρσεϊ στα 39.8″ και το θρίλερ συνεχίστηκε.

Ο Ράιτ αστόχησε σε τρίποντο, οι Πειραιώτες είχαν την τελευταία κατοχή, ο Ντόρσεϊ αστόχησε από το τρίποντο και το ματς πήγε στη δεύτερη παράταση. Δίποντο Πίτερς και τρίποντο Φουρνιέ έκαναν το 82-87, από εκεί και πέρα όμως ουδείς βρήκε τρόπο να σταματήσει τον Γουίλιαμς-Γκος που σκόραρε κατά ριπάς για να πάρει το ματς.
