Stefanos Tsitsipas needed the tie break of the 3rd set to defeat Billy Harris 2-1, for Greece's 1-0 win over Great Britain at the United Cup in Perth.

Stefanos Tsitsipas had to struggle for two hours and 16 minutes to defeat Billy Harris 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) and for Greece to take the lead against Great Britain, in the tie that will decide 1st place in Group E of the United Cup in Perth and direct qualification to the quarterfinals of the competition.

If Maria Sakkari can do it against Emma Radoukano in the next game, the goal will be achieved, otherwise the first place will be decided in the mixed doubles.

Tsitsipas found strong resistance from Billy Harris, No. 124 in the world, but he had the experience and composure in the end to reach the great victory.

A break brought Harris the lead

Harris started the match with a break on Tsitsipas' serve and, comfortably winning his first service game, took a 2-0 lead.

Tsitsipas reduced the gap to 2-1 and 3-2 with two consecutive love games, with Harris closing his third service game without problems for 4-2.

Tsitsipas reduced the gap again to 4-3, but the Briton, with his first love game, made it 5-3. Tsitsipas, after the 2nd tie, with two consecutive points, took the 9th game (5-4), having a chance to stay in the set.

However, with three consecutive easy errors, Harris found himself with a triple set point in his hands and on the 3rd chance he won the set 6-4.

Impressive response by Tsitsipas

Tsitsipas started the 2nd set (1-0) with a love game, with an unlikely point he reached a double break point, Harris "extinguished" the first dangers, but he did not have the same luck on the 3rd chance, where Tsitsipas with a volley achieved the break for 2-0.

Having found a good rhythm, Tsitsipas easily made it 3-0 and with a second consecutive break he escaped with 4-0. Without any difficulties, the Greek player made it 5-0. Harris avoided the bagel set, with Tsitsipas comfortably winning the 2nd set 6-1.

He had the final say in the tie break

The 3rd set was a different story. Harris won the 1st game (1-0) with two straight aces and made it 2-1 and 3-2 with two consecutive love games.

Tsitsipas tied it at 3-3, Harris calmly held his serve for 4-3, but Tsitsipas answered with a love game, and tied it at 4-4.

In fact, the Greek player found a double break point (15-40) in the 9th game, but Harris, with four points in a row, reached 5-4.

Tsitsipas tied the set at 5-5 with a new love game, with the Briton taking the lead again with 6-5. Tsitsipas found himself at 0-30 in the 12th game, but with four consecutive points he tied the set at 6-6, with the match being decided in the tie break: Harris started with a double fault, Tsitsipas took the gift and without making a mistake on his own serves he escaped with 3-0, 5-2, reaching three match points (6-3) and on the second chance he took the set with 7-6(4) and with it the victory.

O Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς χρειάστηκε το tie break του 3ου σετ για να νικήσει τον Μπίλι Χάρις με 2-1 σετ, για το 1-0 της Ελλάδας επί της Μ. Βρετανίας στο United Cup στο Περθ.

O Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς χρειάστηκε να κοπιάσει για δύο ώρες και 16 λεπτά προκειμένου να νικήσει τον Μπίλι Χάρις με 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) και η Ελλάδα να πάρει το προβάδισμα απέναντι στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία, στο tie που θα κρίνει την 1η θέση στον Ε' Όμιλο του United Cup στο Περθ και την απευθείας πρόκριση στα προημιτελικά της διοργάνωσης.

Αν η Μαρία Σάκκαρη τα καταφέρει απέναντι στην Εμμα Ραντουκάνου στο παιχνίδι που ακολουθεί, ο στόχος θα επιτευχθεί, αλλιώς η πρώτη θέση θα κριθεί στο μεικτό διπλό.

Ο Τσιτσιπάς βρήκε σθεναρή αντίσταση από τον Μπίλι Χάρις, Νο.124 στον κόσμο, όμως είχε την εμπειρία και την ψυχραιμία στο τέλος να φθάσει στη σπουδαία νίκη.

Ένα break έφερε προβάδισμα στον Χάρις

O Χάρις ξεκίνησε τον αγώνα με break στο σερβίς του Τσιτσιπά και κατακτώντας με άνεση το πρώτο δικό του service game, προηγήθηκε με 2-0.

Ο Τσιτσιπάς με δύο διαδοχικά love game μείωσε σε 2-1 και 3-2, με τον Χάρις να κλείνει χωρίς προβλήματα το 3ο δικό του service game για το 4-2.

O Tσιτσιπάς μείωσε εκ νέου σε 4-3, όμως ο Βρετανός με το πρώτο δικό του love game, έκανε το 5-3. O Tσιτσιπάς μετά τη 2η ισοπαλία, με δύο διαδοχικούς πόντους πήρε το 9ο game (5-4), έχοντας μια ευκαιρία να μείνει στο σετ.

Όμως με τρία στη σειρά αβίαστα λάθη ο Χάρις βρέθηκε με τριπλό set point στα χέρια του και στην 3η ευκαιρία κατέκτησε το σετ με 6-4.

Εντυπωσιακή απάντηση Τσιτσιπά

Ο Τσιτσιπάς άρχισε με love game το 2ο σετ (1-0), με απίθανο πόντο έφθασε σε διπλό break point, ο Χάρις «έσβησε» τους πρώτους κινδύνους, όμως δεν είχε την ίδια τύχη στην 3η ευκαιρία, όπου ο Τσιτσιπάς με βολέ πέτυχε το break για το 2-0.

Έχοντας βρει ρυθμό για τα καλά, ο Τσιτσιπάς έκαμε με ευκολία το 3-0 και με δεύτερο διαδοχικό break ξέφυγε με 4-0. Χωρίς δυσκολίες ο Έλληνας παίκτης έκανε το 5-0. Ο Χάρις απέφυγε το bagel set, με τον Τσιτσιπά να φθάνει με άνεση στην κατάκτηση του 2ου σετ με 6-1.

Είχε τον τελευταίο λόγο στο tie break

Διαφορετική εικόνα είχε το 3ο σετ. Ο Χάρις με δύο σερί άσους κατέκτησε το 1ο game (1-0) και με δύο διαδοχικά love game έκανε το 2-1 και το 3-2.

Ο Τσιτσιπάς ισοφάρισε σε 3-3, ο Χάρις με ψυχραιμία διατήρησε το σερβίς του για το 4-3, όμως ο Τσιτσιπάς απαντώντας με love game, ισοφάρισε σε 4-4.

Μάλιστα, ο Έλληνας παίκτης βρήκε διπλό break point (15-40) στο 9ο game, όμως ο Χάρις με τέσσερις στη σειρά πόντους, έφθασε στο 5-4.

Ο Τσιτσιπάς με νέο love game ισοφάρισε σε 5-5, με τον Βρετανό να παίρνει ξανά την πρωτοπορία με 6-5.
