Mikkelsen - Tsitsipas 2-0: Saved match point, but not qualification to Halle

Stefanos Tsitsipas failed again against Alex Mikkelsen, losing 7-6(5), 7-5 and being eliminated from the round of 16 at the 500-player tournament in Halle.

Five months after losing in the 1st round of the Australian Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered another elimination from Alex Mikkelsen, now the American prevailed 7-6(5), 7-5 and is the one who continues in the quarterfinals at the 500-player tournament in Halle.

Tsitsipas saved a match point in the 9th game of the 2nd set, reducing it to 5-4, immediately after with his first break of the match, he stayed in it (5-5), but there was no continuation. He accepted a tie break, threw away his own opportunity in the 12th game and the 20-year-old American closed the set with 7-5, securing the qualification and maintaining his undefeated streak against Tsitsipas, in their three total meetings.

Lost tie break

Mikkelsen, losing just one point in the first two service games, led 1-0 and 2-1. Tsitsipas “extinguished” the first break danger, equalizing at 2-2 and with his first love game he made it 3-3.

Mikkelsen, having won 16/18 points from his serve, easily closed the 4th service game (4-3), maintaining the lead (5-4), but Tsitsipas with two aces and a winner in the 10th game, tied again (5-5).

Tsitsipas pressured Mikkelsen in the 11th game, tied at 40-40, but the American had the solutions for 6-5, with Tsitsipas answering for 6-6 and the tie break: Mikkelsen with two aces in a row passed with 3-2, Tsitsipas answered for 4-3, but lost the next three points, with Mikkelsen having a double set point (6-4) and on the second chance to win the set with 7-6(5).

The turnaround was not complete

The first break of the match came from Mickelsen, with the American taking advantage of the opportunity at 30-40, making it 1-0 and maintaining his serve to escape with 2-0 at the start of the 2nd set.

The American with the 6th ace of the game, closed the 4th game (3-1). Tsitsipas reduced to 3-2, but the American easily made it 4-2, reaching 31/37 points won in service games.

The Greek player was looking for his own opportunity for the break, he did not find it even in the 8th game (5-3). Tsitsipas was faced with match point (30-40) in the 9th game, but with three points in a row, he kept hope alive (5-4).

And it grew in the most crucial moment, Tsitsipas led 15-40 and after an effortless mistake from Mikkelsen, he reached the desired goal, break and 5-5. But the situation changed immediately after, at 40-15, Mikkelsen responded with four points in a row for his own break and 6-5.

He had to look cool when he faced a new break point (30-40) and he was, with three consecutive points he took the set 7-5 and made an appointment with Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals.

Ο Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς δεν τα κατάφερε και πάλι με αντίπαλο τον Άλεξ Μίκελσεν, γνώρισε την ήττα με 7-6(5), 7-5 και μαζί τον αποκλεισμό από τον γύρο των «16» στο 500άρι τουρνουά στο Χάλε.

Πέντε μήνες μετά την ήττα στον 1ο γύρο του Australian Open, ο Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς γνώρισε νέο αποκλεισμό από τον Άλεξ Μίκελσεν, τώρα ο Αμερικανός επικράτησε με 7-6(5), 7-5 και είναι αυτός που συνεχίζει στα προημιτελικά στο 500άρι τουρνουά στο Χάλε.

Ο Τσιτσιπάς στο 9o game του 2ου σετ έσωσε match point, μειώνοντας σε 5-4, αμέσως μετά με το πρώτο του break στον αγώνα, έμεινε σε αυτό (5-5), όμως δεν υπήρξε συνέχεια. Δέχθηκε tie break, πέταξε τη δική του ευκαιρία στο 12ο game και ο 20χρονος Αμερικανός έκλεισε το σετ με 7-5, εξασφαλίζοντας την πρόκριση και διατηρώντας το αήττητο απέναντι στον Τσιτσιπά, στις τρεις συνολικά συναντήσεις τους.

Χαμένο tie break

Ο Μίκελσεν χάνοντας μόλις έναν πόντο στα δύο πρώτα service games, προηγήθηκε με 1-0 και 2-1. Ο Τσιτσιπάς «έσβησε» τον πρώτο κίνδυνο break, ισοφαρίζοντας σε 2-2 και με το πρώτο δικό love game έκανε το 3-3.

Ο Μίκελσεν έχοντας 16/18 κερδισμένους πόντους από το σερβίς του, έκλεισε εύκολα και το 4ο service game (4-3), να διατηρεί το προβάδισμα (5-4), όμως τον Τσιτσιπά με δύο άσους κι ένα winner στο 10ο game, να ισοφαρίζει εκ νέου (5-5).

Ο Τσιτσιπάς πίεσε τον Μίκελσεν στο 11ο game, ισοφάρισε σε 40-40, όμως ο Αμερικανός είχε τις λύσεις για το 6-5, με τον Τσιτσιπά να απαντά για το 6-6 και το tie break: Ο Μίκελσεν με δύο στη σειρά άσους προσπέρασε με 3-2, ο Τσιτσιπάς απάντησε για το 4-3, όμως έχασε τους τρεις επόμενους πόντους, με τον Μίκελσεν να έχει διπλό set point (6-4) και στη δεύτερη ευκαιρία να κατακτά το σετ με 7-6(5).

Η ανατροπή δεν ολοκληρώθηκε

Το πρώτο break στον αγώνα ήρθε από τον Μίκελσεν, με τον Αμερικανό να εκμεταλλεύεται την ευκαιρία στο 30-40, να κάνει το 1-0 και διατηρώντας το σερβίς του να ξεφεύγει με 2-0 στο ξεκίνημα του 2ου σετ.

Ο Αμερικανός με τον 6ο άσο στο παιχνίδι, έκλεισε το 4ο game (3-1). Ο Τσιτσιπάς μείωσε σε 3-2, όμως ο Αμερικανός έκανε με ευκολία το 4-2, φθάνοντας στους 31/37 κερδισμένους πόντους στα service games.

Ο Έλληνας παίκτης αναζητούσε τη δική του ευκαιρία για το break, δεν τη βρήκε ούτε στο 8ο game (5-3). O Tσιτσιπάς βρέθηκε αντιμέτωπος με match point (30-40) στο 9ο game, όμως με τρεις πόντους στη σειρά, διατήρησε ζωντανή την ελπίδα (5-4).

Κι αυτή γιγαντώθηκε στην πλέον κρίσιμη στιγμή, ο Τσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε 15-40 και μετά το αβίαστο λάθος από τον Μίκελσεν, έφθασε στο ζητούμενο, break και 5-5. Όμως τα δεδομένα άλλαξαν αμέσως μετά, στο 40-15, ο Μίκελσεν απάντησε με τέσσερις πόντους στη σειρά για το δικό του break και το 6-5.

Χρειάστηκε να φανεί ψύχραιμος όταν αντιμετώπισε νέο break point (30-40) και ήταν, με τρεις διαδοχικούς πόντους πήρε το σετ με 7-5 κι έκλεισε ραντεβού με τον Ντανίλ Μεντβέντεφ στα προημιτελικά.
