Galatasaray - AEK 71-81: "Queen" name and thing in the City (video)
Wow, an AEK! The team of Ilias Kanzouris passed the headquarters of Galatasaray (81-71), in perhaps their best appearance this year, both inside and outside the borders. Achille Mitchell is unbeaten near the basket, great performances from Dimitris Flionis (in the first) and Giannis Strelnieks (in the second).
AEK made one of its best appearances this year and passed through Istanbul, beating Galatasaray (81-71) for the second matchday of the Top 16 of the Basketball Champions League. The defense and Dimitris Flionis (incredible performance as he missed the triple-double by one assist!) laid the groundwork for victory in the first half, before the baton was passed to Achille Mitchell and Giannis Strelnieks, who were delightful and dominant after rest.
With this double (but also thanks to the +10) AEK enters a strong position against Galatasaray in everything to do with the qualification to the Final Eight, showing that this year they are capable of going all the way to the Basketball Champions League.

The race
AEK managed to control the pace of the match from the first minutes, not allowing Galatasaray to go into transition. This fact combined with the regional failure of the home team allowed Elias Kanzouris' team to stay close at the end of the first period (19-18 at 10'), with Akil Mitchell making a breakthrough in the rebounds.
The game continued in the same pattern in the second quarter, with Dimitris Flionis now taking a step forward and with his exuberant game (8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) giving extra solutions to the yellow and black, on the way to -1 ( 36-35) of the break, despite 5/16 three-pointers.
After returning from the locker room, Galatasaray was much more consistent in the perimeter shot, but so was AEK. Thanks to Kostas Papadakis. The international guard made two three-pointers in transition and was a piece of major importance for the Union to take the lead (46-50 in the 25th minute), which it did not let go of until the finale.
Sometimes Janis Strelnieks and sometimes Akil Mitchell were there to ensure that Galatasaray would not turn the game upside down, with the yellow-black lead reaching +7 (68-75) with 1'24'' to go thanks to a basket by Achille Mitchell. Somewhere there, the epilogue actually came in, with the consequence from the personal line helping AEK to maintain the achievements until the end, on the way to a really great victory.

Πω πω μια ΑΕΚ! Η ομάδα του Ηλία Καντζούρη πέρασε από την έδρα της Γαλατάσαραϊ (81-71), στην ίσως καλύτερη φετινή της εμφάνιση, τόσο εντός όσο κι εκτός των συνόρων. Ανίκητος ο Ακίλ Μίτσελ κοντά στο καλάθι, μεγάλη εμφάνιση από Δημήτρη Φλιώνη (στο πρώτο) και Γιάνις Στρέλνιεκς (στο δεύτερο).
Η ΑΕΚ έκανε μία από τις καλύτερες φετινές εμφανίσεις της και πέρασε από την Κωνσταντινούπολη, επικρατώντας της Γαλατάσαραϊ (81-71) για τη δεύτερη αγωνιστική του Top 16 του Basketball Champions League. Η άμυνα και ο Δημήτρης Φλιώνης (ασύλληπτη εμφάνιση καθώς έχασε το τριμπλ νταμπλ για μία ασίστ!) έβαλαν τις βάσεις για τη νίκη στο πρώτο μέρος, πριν περάσει η σκυτάλη στον Ακίλ Μίτσελ και τον Γιάνις Στρέλνιεκς, οι οποίοι ήταν απολαυστικοί και κυρίαρχοι μετά από την ανάπαυλα.
Με αυτό το διπλό (αλλά και χάρη στο +10) η ΑΕΚ μπαίνει σε θέση ισχύος έναντι της Γαλατάσαραϊ σε ό,τι έχει να κάνει με την πρόκριση στο Final Eight, δείχνοντας πως φέτος είναι ικανή να πάει μέχρι το τέλος του δρόμου στο Basketball Champions League.

Η ΑΕΚ κατάφερε να ελέγξει τον ρυθμό του αγώνα ήδη από τα πρώτα λεπτά, μην επιτρέποντας στη Γαλατάσαραϊ να πάει στο transition. Αυτό το γεγονός σε συνδυασμό με την περιφερειακή αστοχία των γηπεδούχων επέτρεψε στην ομάδα του Ηλία Καντζούρη να μείνει κοντά στο τέλος της πρώτης περιόδου (19-18 στο 10'), με τον Ακίλ Μίτσελ να κάνει θραύση στα ριμπάουντ.
Στο ίδιο μοτίβο συνεχίστηκε το παιχνίδι στο δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο, με τον Δημήτρη Φλιώνη να κάνει πλέον ένα βήμα μπροστά και με το πληθωρικό παιχνίδι του (8 πόντοι, 5 ριμπάουντ, 3 ασίστ) να δίνει έξτρα λύσεις στους κιτρινόμαυρους, στον δρόμο για το -1 (36-35) της ανάπαυλας, παρά τα 5/16 τρίποντα.
Με την επιστροφή από τα αποδυτήρια, η Γαλατάσαραϊ παρουσιάστηκε αρκετά πιο συνεπής στο περιφερειακό σουτ, αλλά το ίδιο συνέβη με την ΑΕΚ. Χάρη στον Κώστα Παπαδάκη. Ο διεθνής γκαρντ έβαλε δύο τρίποντα στο transition και αποτέλεσε κομμάτι μείζονος σημασίας για να πάρει η Ένωση το προβάδισμα (46-50 στο 25'), το οποίο δεν άφησε από τα χέρια της, μέχρι το φινάλε.
Πότε ο Γιάνις Στρέλνιεκς και πότε ο Ακίλ Μίτσελ ήταν εκεί για να διασφαλίσουν πως η Γαλατάσαραϊ δεν θα φέρει τούμπα το παιχνίδι, με το κιτρινόμαυρο προβάδισμα να φτάνει στο +7 (68-75) με 1'24'' για το τέλος χάρη σε καλάθι του Ακίλ Μίτσελ. Κάπου εκεί μπήκε επί της ουσίας ο επίλογος, με τη συνέπεια από την γραμμή των προσωπικών να βοηθά την ΑΕΚ να διατηρήσει τα κεκτημένα μέχρι το τέλος, στον δρόμο για μια πραγματικά μεγάλη νίκη.
