Iga Swiatek is already going through a dream year having won 2 WTA 1000 titles in Qatar and Indian Wells and with the most recent achievement she has risen to No. 1 in the world rankings with an official date of April 4th. After the withdrawal of Ashley Barty from active action, No. 1 remained open with Poland being its main contender for this week.

The 20-year-old needed just one victory on the main board of the Miami Open to climb to the top and she did it on Friday night 25/3.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Iga spoke about her achievement as she became the first Poland to reach the No. 1 in the world rankings.

"The thing is, I never really imagined it right now because, to be honest, I was working day in and day out and playing good tennis. I never had the strong belief that it could actually happen. So, it's even more surreal for me.

Now I start and realize why before my match (with Victoria Golubic) I was focused on winning. The last two days have been very stressful.

But now I am proud and satisfied with myself because I feel that my tennis is on the right track. I want to continue like this even if we are all excited now, I have to stay relaxed. I have to concentrate on the tournament. "

Sfiodek will face No. 59 Madison Brengle for a place in the "16" of the Miami Open, on Sunday 27/3.

Η Ίγκα Σφιόντεκ διανύει ήδη μια ονειρεμένη χρονιά έχοντας κατακτήσει 2 WTA 1000 τίτλους σε Κατάρ και Indian Wells και με πιο πρόσφατο επίτευγμα την άνοδό της στο Νο1 της παγκόσμιας κατάταξης με επίσημη ημερομηνία τις 4 Απριλίου. Μετά την απόσυρση της Άσλεϊ Μπάρτι από την ενεργό δράση το Νο1 έμεινε ανοικτό με την Πολωνή να είναι η βασική διεκδικήτρια του για αυτή την εβδομάδα. Η 20χρονη χρειαζόταν μία μόλις νίκη στο κυρίως ταμπλό του Miami Open για να σκαρφαλώσει στην κορυφή και το κατάφερε το βράδυ της Παρασκευής 25/3.

Σε συνέντευξή της για το BBC Sport, η Ίγκα μίλησε για το κατόρθωμά της καθώς έγινε η πρώτη Πολωνή που κατακτά το Νο1 της παγκόσμιας κατάταξης.

“Το θέμα είναι ότι ποτέ δεν φανταζόμουν πραγματικά αυτή τη στιγμή γιατί, για να πω την αλήθεια, δούλευα μέρα με τη μέρα και έπαιζα καλό τένις. Ποτέ δεν είχα την ισχυρή πεποίθηση ότι μπορεί να συμβεί στην πραγματικότητα. Έτσι, είναι ακόμα πιο σουρεαλιστικό για μένα.

Τώρα αρχίζω και το συνειδητοποιώ γιατί πριν από το ματς μου (με τη Βικτόρια Γκόλουμπιτς) είχα συγκεντρωθεί στο να κερδίσω. Οι τελευταίες δύο μέρες ήταν πολύ αγχωτικές.

Τώρα όμως είμαι περήφανη και ικανοποιημένη με τον εαυτό μου γιατί νιώθω ότι το τένις μου έχει μπει σε έναν σωστό δρόμο. Θέλω να συνεχίσω έτσι ακόμη και αν όλοι είμαστε ενθουσιασμένοι τώρα, πρέπει να παραμείνω χαλαρή. Πρέπει να συγκεντρωθώ στο τουρνουά.”

Η Σφιόντεκ θα αντιμετωπίσει την Νο59 Μάντισον Μπρενγκλ για μια θέση στις “16” του Miami Open, την Κυριακή 27/3.
