Panathinaikos AKTOR qualified for the EuroLeague playoffs after its 90-76 victory over Monaco for the Play-In at the hot Telekom Center Athens. Huge step-up from TJ Shorts who had 21 points.
The unprecedented Play-In experience did not scare Panathinaikos AKTOR, who crushed Mike James's formidable Monaco 87-79 (25 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 turnovers) in a bustling Telekom Center Athens and qualified for the EuroLeague playoffs as the 7th seed, only to find Valencia on their way with home field advantage and give it their all to reach the Final Four that will be held at home (May 22-24). A major protagonist for the greens was TJ Shorts with 21 points (8/11 two-pointers, 1/2 three-pointers, 2/2 shots), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Very important were the assists offered by Kenneth Farid with 12 points, 8 rebounds.
The MVP
T.J. Shorts. The short guard felt comfortable against Monaco, which he knows very well from his time in Paris, and played his best game in the Panathinaikos jersey, offering 21 points (8/11 two-pointers, 1/2 three-pointers, 2/2 shots), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 24 PIR.
The statistics that stood out
Monaco entered the match with 0/6 three-pointers, which had given 10 points from its 8 mistakes to Panathinaikos in the first half. The greens had also found 13 second-chance points from 7 offensive rebounds during this period.
At the end of the match, the second chance points were 20-11 and the points from opponent errors were 20-7.
The match
Panathinaikos started with Grant, Nunn, Osman, Hayes-Davis, Lesor and found themselves losing 0-6 at 2’30”. Ataman called a time-out at the two-minute mark and put Shorts – Farid in the match. The short guard scored the first points for the home team from the charity stripe and closed the quarter with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist to make it 23-14 (10′).
With James making two hanging three-pointers and increasing to 12 points, Monaco reduced to 25-22 (12′). The clover did not take long to increase the difference to double digits (35-24, 15′) with Lesor, Rogavopoulos and Grant scored. Strazel scored 5 points, but Sloukas answered with a three-pointer and an assist to Lesor for 41-29 at 17′. By the break, the gap had widened to 15 points (49-34), although James alone had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 turnovers.
In 24′ the Greens were at +17 (60-43), but the visitors reduced it to 8 (62-54) at 28′, with Lesor committing two fouls, reaching four and leaving his place to Hayes-Davis and Panathinaikos in small-ball. James reduced the difference to 7 points (64-57) with a three-pointer, but Sloukas had the final say in the third period (66-57, 30′).
Rogavopoulos scored two consecutive baskets (70-57, 31′). Despite the efforts of James, who reached 23 points in the 36′, Panathinaikos continued to be in a leading position (77-70). Sloukas and Shorts scored for 81-70 in the 36’40”. Nunn made the dagger three-pointer for 86-74 with 1’25” left.

Στα playoffs της EuroLeague προκρίθηκε ο Παναθηναϊκός AKTOR μετά την νίκη του με 90-76 επί της Μονακό για το Play-In στο καυτό Telekom Center Athens. Τεράστιο step-up από τον Τι Τζέι Σορτς που είχε 21 πόντους.
Η πρωτόγνωρη εμπειρία του Play-In δεν τρόμαξε τον Παναθηναϊκό AKTOR, ο οποίος πάτησε με 87-79 την αξιόμαχη Μονακό του Μάικ Τζέιμς (25 πόντοι, 5 ριμπάουντ, 7 ασίστ, 5 λάθη) σε ένα Telekom Center Athens που κόχλαζε και προκρίθηκε στα playoffs της EuroLeague ως 7ος, για να βρει στο διάβα του τη Βαλένθια με μειονέκτημα έδρας και να τα δώσει όλα για να βρεθεί στο Final Four που θα διεξαχθεί στην έδρα του (22-24 Μαΐου).
Μεγάλος πρωταγωνιστής για τους πράσινους ήταν ο Τι Τζέι Σορτς με 21 πόντους (8/11 δίποντα, 1/2 τρίποντα, 2/2βολές), 3 ριμπάουντ, 2 ασίστ, 1 κλέψιμο. Πολύ σημαντικές οι βοήθειες που προσέφερε και ο Κένεθ Φαρίντ με 12 πόντους, 8 ριμπάουντ.
O MVP
Ο Τι Τζέι Σορτς. Ο βραχύσωμος γκαρντ αισθάνθηκε άνετα απέναντι στην Μονακό την οποία ξέρει πολύ καλά από τη θητεία του στην Παρί και έκανε το καλύτερο παιχνίδι του με τη φανέλα του Παναθηναϊκού, προσφέροντας 21 πόντους (8/11 δίποντα, 1/2 τρίποντα, 2/2βολές), 3 ριμπάουντ, 2 ασίστ, 1 κλέψιμο και 24 PIR.
Τα στατιστικά που ξεχώρισαν
Με 0/6 τρίποντα μπήκε στο ματς η Μονακό, που είχε δώσει 10 πόντους από τα 8 λάθη της στον Παναθηναϊκό στο πρώτο μέρος. Οι πράσινοι είχαν βρει και 13 πόντους δεύτερης ευκαιρίας από 7 επιθετικά ριμπάουντ σε αυτό το διάστημα.
Στο φινάλε του αγώνα οι πόντοι δεύτερης ευκαιρίας ήταν 20-11 και οι πόντοι από λάθη αντιπάλου 20-7.
Ο αγώνας
Ο Παναθηναϊκός ξεκίνησε με Γκραντ, Ναν, Όσμαν, Χέιζ-Ντέιβις, Λεσόρ και βρέθηκε να χάνει με 0-6 στο 2’30”. Ο Αταμάν κάλεσε time-out στο δίλεπτο κι έβαλε στο ματς Σορτς – Φαρίντ. Ο βραχύσωμος γκαρντ έβαλε τους πρώτους πόντους για τους γηπεδούχους από τη γραμμή της φιλανθρωπίας κι έκλεισε το δεκάλεπτο με 11 πόντους, 3 ριμπάουντ, 1 ασίστ για να προκύψει το 23-14 (10′).
Με τον Τζέιμς να βάζει δύο κρεμασμένα τρίποντα και να ανεβαίνει στους 12 πόντους, η Μονακό μείωσε σε 25-22 (12′). Το τριφύλλι δεν άργησε να ανεβάσει τη διαφορά σε διψήφια επίπεδα (35-24, 15′) με Λεσόρ, Ρογκαβόπουλο και Γκραντ να δίνουν σκορ. Ο Στράζελ έβαλε 5 μαζεμένους πόντους, όμως ο Σλούκας απάντησε με τρίποντο και ασίστ στον Λεσόρ για το 41-29 στο 17′. Μέχρι την ανάπαυλα η ψαλίδα είχα ανοίξει στους 15 πόντους (49-34), παρότι ο Τζέιμς είχε μόνος του 15 πόντους, 3 ριμπάουντ, 3 ασίστ αλλά και 4 λάθη.
Στο 24′ οι πράσινοι βρέθηκαν στο +17 (60-43), όμως οι φιλοξενούμενοι μείωσαν στους 8 (62-54) στο 28′, με τον Λεσόρ να κάνει δύο μαζεμένα φάουλ, να φτάνει στα τέσσερα και να αφήνει τη θέση του στον Χέιζ-Ντέιβις και τον Παναθηναϊκό σε small-ball. Ο Τζέιμς κατέβασε τη διαφορά μέχρι τους 7 πόντους (64-57) με τρίποντο, αλλά ο Σλούκας είπε την τελευταία λέξη στην τρίτη περίοδο (66-57, 30′).
Ο Ρογκαβόπουλος έβαλε δύο διαδοχικά καλάθια (70-57, 31′). Παρά τις προσπάθεις του Τζέιμς, ο οποίος έφτασε στους 23 πόντους στο 36′, ο Παναθηναϊκός συνέχισε να βρίσκεται σε θέση οδηγού (77-70). Σλούκας και Σορτς σκόραραν για το 81-70 στο 36’40”. Ο Ναν έβαλε το dagger τρίποντο για το 86-74 στα 1’25” πριν το τέλος.
