Athinaikos makes history again - In a European final after 16 years, Byron's team!

With the awesome and terrible Prince coming out in front at crucial points of the match, Athinaikos withstood Villeneuve's counterattack and despite the defeat with a score of 78-70, qualified for the EuroCup finals!

A dream is alive, don't wake it up! Athinaikos made history on Wednesday night (04/03) and celebrated qualifying for the EuroCup Women finals!

Stella Kaltsidou's team withstood the pressure of last year's holder of the competition, Villeneuve and with the awesome and terrible Alexis Prince in the fourth and final period, managed to defend the +13 advantage of the first match despite the defeat with a score of 78-70 in Lille!

The Byron club is reliving moments... 2010, when 16 years ago it had won the only European title in its history in doubles matches with rival Nadezhda in the EuroCup.

The Greek team's top scorer was Prince with 24 points - 15 points in the 4th period - 9 rebounds and 25 points in the evaluation system, with Tadic adding valuable assists (11p., 8r.)!

Now, it is called upon to overcome the obstacle of the mighty Mersin to reach... the Promised Land, with Athinaicos facing the Turkish club in doubles matches on April 2 (in Byron) and on the 9th of the same month in Mersin.

The match:

Athens entered the game very dynamically and with Prince's two three-pointers, they led 8-4 in the first 3 minutes, before Villeneuve turned things around and reacted. Thanks to their good defense, the home team held the Greek team to just one in-field basket for the next six minutes, taking the lead 18-13 in the 9th minute. With four consecutive points from Anigue, the guests... got out on the offensive and reduced the lead to 18-17 in the first period.

The game was even closer in the second quarter, with a slow tempo and many missed shots, a result of course of the enormous stakes that the match had. It was characteristic that the individual score in the period was 14-15, with Ratsa, Prince, Pavlopoulou and Tadic aggressively holding Stella Kaltsidou's team and sending the two teams to the locker room in an absolute tie (32-32).

The third quarter was quite different, with the two teams playing more aggressively and freely on both sides of the court. With baskets from Prince, Pavlopoulou and Winterburn, Byron's club took the lead for the first time in the evening by 6 points (32-38), a lead they maintained until midway through the period. Somewhere there, the French team with Tahan and Alston managed to tie the match (48-48), with the former even hitting a big three-pointer in the final for 54-50.

Naturally, Villeneuve entered the fourth and final period determined to play her best and cover the -13 of the first match. The Greek team withstood the counterattack and with great actions from the amazing Prince and Ratsa, stayed close to the score for 60-57 in the 33rd minute. The home team responded with a quick 7-1 run, with the incredible Prince keeping Athinaikos in the match (69-64) by herself with eleven points in the first 7 minutes of the quarter (69-64)!

Despite all this, Villeneuve reached +10 (74-64) a minute later, setting the match on fire. However, Athenian with... Olympian composure and four collected points from Prince reduced it to 74-68 a minute before the final, "protecting" the difference of the match and reaching the historic victory and qualification to the EuroCup final with the final 78-70!

Με την φοβερή και τρομερή Πρινς να βγαίνει μπροστά στα κρίσιμα σημεία του αγώνα, ο Αθηναϊκός άντεξε την αντεπίθεση της Βιλνέβ και παρά την ήττα με σκορ 78-70, προκρίθηκε στους τελικούς του EuroCup!

Όνειρο ζει μην τον... ξυπνάτε! Ο Αθηναϊκός έγραψε ιστορία το βράδυ της Τετάρτης (04/03) και πανηγύρισε την πρόκριση στους τελικούς του EuroCup Women!

Η ομαδάρα της Στέλλας Καλτσίδου άντεξε στην πίεση της περσινής κατόχου της διοργάνωσης, Βιλνέβ και με την φοβερή και τρομερή Αλέξις Πρινς στην τέταρτη και τελευταία περίοδο, κατάφερε να υπερασπιστεί το υπέρ της +13 του πρώτου αγώνα παρά την ήττα με σκορ 78-70 στη Λιλ!

Ο σύλλογος του Βύρωνα βιώνει ξανά στιγμές... 2010, όταν πριν από 16 χρόνια είχε κατακτήσει τον μοναδικό ευρωπαϊκό τίτλο της ιστορίας του σε διπλές αναμετρήσεις με αντίπαλο Ναντέζντα στο EuroCup.

Κορυφαία για την ελληνική ομάδα ήταν η Πρινς με 24 πόντους - 15 πόντους στην 4η περίοδο - 9 ριμπάουντ και 25 μονάδες στο σύστημα αξιολόγησης, με τις Τάντιτς να προσθέτει πολύτιμες βοήθειες (11π., 8ρ.)!

Πλέον, καλείται να υπερκεράσει το εμπόδιο της πανίσχυρης Μερσίν για να φτάσει στη... Γη της Επαγγελίας, με τον Αθηναϊκό να αντιμετωπίζει σε διπλές αναμετρήσεις τον τουρκικό σύλλογο στις 2 Απριλίου (στον Βύρωνα) και 9 του ίδιου μήνα στη Μερσίνη.

Το ματς:

Ο Αθηναϊκός μπήκε πολύ δυναμικά στο παιχνίδι και με τα δύο μαζεμένα τρίποντα της Πρινς προηγήθηκε με 8-4 στο πρώτο 3λεπτο, προτού η Βιλνέβ ανεβάσει στροφές και αντιδράσει. Χάρη στην καλή τους άμυνα, οι γηπεδούχες κράτησαν την ελληνική ομάδα σε μόλις ένα εντός πεδιάς καλάθι για τα επόμενα έξι λεπτά, παίρνοντας το προβάδισμα με 18-13 στο 9'. Με τέσσερις διαδοχικούς πόντους της Ανίγκουε, οι φιλοξενούμενες... ξελάσπωσαν επιθετικά και μείωσαν στο 18-17 της πρώτης περιόδου.

Ακόμα πιο κλειστό ήταν το παιχνίδι στο δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο, με αργό τέμπο και πολλά χαμένα σουτ, απόρροια φυσικά του τεράστιου διακυβεύματος που είχε η αναμέτρηση. Χαρακτηριστικό ήταν πως το επιμέρους σκορ στην περίοδο ήταν 14-15, με τις Ράτσα, Πρινς, Παυλοπούλου και Τάντιτς να κρατούν επιθετικά την ομάδα της Στέλλας Καλτσίδου και να στέλνουν τις δύο ομάδες στα αποδυτήρια στην απόλυτη ισοπαλία (32-32).

Αρκετά διαφορετικό ήταν το τρίτο δεκάλεπτο, με τις δύο ομάδες να παίζουν πιο επιθετικά και απελευθερωμένα στις δύο πλευρές του παρκέ. Με καλάθια των Πρινς, Παυλοπούλου και Γουίντερμπερν, ο σύλλογος του Βύρωνα προηγήθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην βραδιά με 6 πόντους (32-38), ένα προβάδισμα που διατήρησαν μέχρι τα μέσα της περιόδου. Κάπου εκεί οι Γαλλίδες με τις Ταχάν και Άλστον κατάφεραν να φέρουν το ματς στα ίσα (48-48), με την πρώτη μάλιστα να πετυχαίνει ένα μεγάλο τρίποντο στο φινάλε για το 54-50.

Όπως ήταν φυσικό, η Βιλνέβ μπήκε στην τέταρτη και τελευταία περίοδο αποφασισμένη να παίξει τα... ρέστα της και να καλύψει το -13 του πρώτου αγώνα. Η ελληνική ομάδα άντεξε στην αντεπίθεση και με σπουδαίες ενέργειες της εκπληκτικής Πρινς και της Ράτσα, έμεινε κοντά στο σκορ για το 60-57 στο 33ο λεπτό. Οι γηπεδούχες απάντησαν με ένα γρήγορο 7-1 σερί, με την απίθανη Πρινς να κρατά μόνη της τον Αθηναϊκό μέσα στο ματς (69-64) με έντεκα πόντους στα πρώτα 7 λεπτά του δεκαλέπτου (69-64)!

Παρ' όλα αυτά, η Βιλνέβ έφτασε μέχρι το +10 (74-64) ένα λεπτό μετά, βάζοντας φωτιά στο ματς. Ωστόσο, ο Αθηναϊκός με... Ολύμπια ψυχραιμία και τέσσερις μαζεμένους πόντους της Πρινς μείωσε στο 74-68 ένα λεπτό πριν το φινάλε, «προστατεύοντας» τη διαφορά του αγώνα και φτάνοντας στην ιστορική νίκη και πρόκριση στον τελικό του EuroCup με το τελικό 78-70!
