F1 - Australian GP honours Hannah Schmitz and Laura Miller
The two female engineers from Red Bull Racing and Haas in Formula 1 will now have their names on a corner at the Australian Grand Prix.
Formula 1 is sending a strong message of recognition to the role of women in motorsport. The Australian Grand Prix has taken the initiative to rename Turn 6 of the Albert Park circuit in honour of two leading engineers: Hannah Schmitz and Laura Miller
The initiative is part of the “In Her Corner” program, in collaboration with Engineers Australia and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Two careers at the top of F1
Hannah Schmitz, head of race strategy for Red Bull Racing, has been one of the most recognisable faces on the pitwall in recent years. She joined the team in 2009 as a simulation and strategy engineer, was promoted to senior strategy engineer in 2011 and has held her current position since 2021.
The 40-year-old is one of only 11 women to have stood on the F1 podium to collect a constructors’ trophy.
“I love my job and if you have the privilege of choosing it, make sure it’s the right role for you. I’ve always been curious about how things work and I loved cars. At school I had great support from teachers who paved the way for me into the world of engineering, they were my inspiration. For me it was a huge honour to represent the team on the podium. In Qatar last year, in the battle for the drivers’ championship, it was special to see how everyone came together as a team,” she said.

The rise of Laura Miller
Laura Miller has followed a different but equally steady path. She joined Haas in 2022 in the simulator department, progressing into racing support roles and in 2024 became performance engineer. In 2025 she became Esteban Ocon’s chief engineer.
She stressed the importance of visibility and representation: “The ‘In Her Corner’ initiative promotes the importance of ‘if you can see it, you can do it’. The more we highlight the achievements of women in engineering, the better. To be part of this recognition so early in my Formula 1 career is an honour and I hope it inspires girls and young people to pursue careers in STEM. It’s important to recognise what women have achieved in motorsport and it’s great to be standing alongside Hannah.”

Symbolism at an iconic location
Turn 6 of Albert Park is now a landmark with special symbolism. As Engineers Australia’s chief engineer, Catherine Richards, said:
“We are proud to partner with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation to name two women who are shaping Formula 1 today at one of the world’s most iconic circuits. ‘In Her Corner’ honours the talent, leadership and ambition of two engineers who are redefining the boundaries, not only in Formula 1 but also in engineering, technology and business.”

Δύο καριέρες στην κορυφή της F1
Η Χάνα Σμιτζ, επικεφαλής στρατηγικής αγώνα της Red Bull Racing, είναι ένα από τα πιο αναγνωρίσιμα πρόσωπα στο pitwall τα τελευταία χρόνια. Εντάχθηκε στην ομάδα το 2009 ως μηχανικός προσομοιώσεων και στρατηγικής, προήχθη σε senior strategy engineer το 2011 και από το 2021 κατέχει την τωρινή της θέση.
Η 40χρονη είναι μία από μόλις 11 γυναίκες που έχουν ανέβει στο βάθρο της F1 για να παραλάβουν τρόπαιο κατασκευαστών.
«Αγαπώ τη δουλειά μου και, αν έχεις το προνόμιο να επιλέξεις, βεβαιώσου ότι είναι ο σωστός ρόλος για σένα. Πάντα ήμουν περίεργη για το πώς λειτουργούν τα πράγματα και αγαπούσα τα αυτοκίνητα. Στο σχολείο είχα σπουδαία στήριξη από καθηγητές που μου άνοιξαν τον δρόμο προς τον κόσμο της μηχανικής, ήταν η έμπνευσή μου. Για μένα ήταν τεράστια τιμή να εκπροσωπώ την ομάδα στο βάθρο. Στο Κατάρ πέρυσι, στη μάχη για το πρωτάθλημα οδηγών, ήταν ξεχωριστό να βλέπεις πώς όλοι ενώθηκαν ως ομάδα», είπε.

Η άνοδος της Λάουρα Μίλερ
Η Λάουρα Μίλερ ακολούθησε διαφορετική διαδρομή, αλλά με αντίστοιχα σταθερή εξέλιξη. Εντάχθηκε στη Haas το 2022 στο τμήμα προσομοιωτή, προχώρησε σε ρόλους υποστήριξης στους αγώνες και το 2024 ανέλαβε μηχανικός απόδοσης. Το 2025 έγινε αρχιμηχανικός του Έστεμπαν Οκόν.
Η ίδια υπογράμμισε τη σημασία της ορατότητας και της εκπροσώπησης: «Η πρωτοβουλία ‘In Her Corner’ προωθεί τη σημασία του “αν μπορείς να το δεις, μπορείς να το γίνεις”. Όσο περισσότερο αναδεικνύουμε τα επιτεύγματα των γυναικών στη μηχανική, τόσο το καλύτερο. Το να είμαι μέρος αυτής της αναγνώρισης τόσο νωρίς στην καριέρα μου στη Formula 1 είναι τιμή και ελπίζω να εμπνεύσει κορίτσια και νέους να ακολουθήσουν καριέρα στο STEM. Είναι σημαντικό να αναγνωρίζουμε όσα έχουν πετύχει οι γυναίκες στον μηχανοκίνητο αθλητισμό και είναι υπέροχο που βρίσκομαι δίπλα στη Χάνα».
