Sakota: "For the team to keep the same players, it would need half the budget more - The public's role is huge"
Dragan Sakota spoke at AEK's Media Day about the team's new roster and the important role of the public.
His detailed statements:
On how satisfied he is with this year's roster and the "building" of his team: "You can ask me this question at the beginning, when you bring in a player and you don't know practically what you're dealing with. Many players show what they can do along the way and not from the beginning. We want to create a way of playing and eventually succeed, but now it's still the beginning and we can't say much.
This year, despite the fact that we wanted to keep more players, it wasn't easy, when you have a success and have a good run, the players are worth more and the market as it has changed, and is heading into the unknown, has escaped and AEK does not define that. In short, to keep the same players, the team would need half the budget more.
Some things were convenient and we went to bring in new players. Right now we are exactly six old and six new players. I would say that of the six new players, two are not exactly new, Bartley and Katsivelis are players that I have worked with in the past and I know roughly what they can give, the rest are relatively new but qualitatively good.
All the players are equal, some of them may be better, but when you have a number of players at the beginning you think that you are a united team and this is the “building” process that we said before”
On the titles he has won and whether he has a different goal for this season: “When we talk about goals, they have to do with the result, because my goals are probably different. As is the situation in Greece where there are two big teams that continue to stand out, either in terms of the number of players or in terms of the budget, even in the competitions they compete in, which are stronger, then you forget the main goal, which is to win the championship and you try to be competitive and as close as possible to these two teams.
This is definitely a goal of ours. But the way basketball is played is changing, we changed it, we went to a more transition game and we are fighters on the court. We never gave up a match that seemed from the beginning that it was not going well, we fight until the end. With the athletic elements we have, I believe we could achieve this again this year.
Personally, I have always liked working with young kids, and it is worth putting a new kid on the team and seeing him in college next year. I want us to have players with this perspective, a new “name”, we have brought and will present it at any time.
I don't know if he will continue with us down the road, as everyone has the right to leave at some point. The second goal is recognition and for the team to play in a style that people like, and I believe that in the middle of last year we achieved that and people were coming to see us."
On what he likes about this year's team so far: "That the team is more physical and the players are more demanding, because in theory this is something that can be seen, but along the way we also have to build a defense that shows this physicality that we have and helps us have the same numbers as last year in transition and the off ball game, which was the most successful action in the world."
On the goals for the year: "To create a game with speed and with a pressing defense, with matchups on the racket and to become more aggressive, not to eat easy baskets and not to make hasty choices. To play with brains and with the qualifications that we have.
In this process of improvement, the people will play a very big role. Last year, the first game started strong and then we had some turbulence. There was definitely a problem with the “big guys”, but when the people started coming and supporting the team’s effort, we also moved up. I expect something similar this year, for the people to come and help us on this journey.”

Αναλυτικά οι δηλώσεις του:
Για το πόσο ικανοποιημένος είναι με το φετινό ρόστερ και το “χτίσιμο” της ομάδας του: «Αυτήν την ερώτηση μπορείτε να μου την κάνετε στην αρχή, που φέρνεις κάποιον παίκτη και δεν ξέρεις πρακτικά με τί έχεις να κάνεις. Πολλοί παίκτες δείχνουν τι μπορούν να κάνουν στην πορεία και όχι από την αρχή. Θέλουμε να δημιουργήσουμε έναν τρόπο παιχνιδιού και στο τέλος να τα καταφέρουμε, αλλά τώρα είναι ακόμα αρχή και δεν μπορούμε να πούμε πολλά πράγματα.
Φέτος παρά το γεγονός ότι θέλαμε να κρατήσουμε περισσότερους παίκτες δεν ήταν εύκολο, όταν κάνεις μια επιτυχία και έχεις μια καλή πορεία οι παίκτες αξίζουν παραπάνω και το market έτσι όπως έχει μετατραπεί, και πάει στο άγνωστο, έχει ξεφύγει και αυτό δεν το ορίζει η ΑΕΚ. Με λίγα λόγια για να κρατήσει η ομάδα τους ίδιους παίκτες θα χρειαζόταν το μισό μπάτζετ παραπάνω.
Κάποια πράγματα ήταν βολικά και πήγαμε να φέρουμε καινούργιους παίκτες. Αυτή τη στιγμή είμαστε ακριβώς έξι παλιοί και έξι νέοι παίκτες. Θα έλεγα και από τους έξι νέους, οι δύο δεν είναι ακριβώς νέοι, ο Μπάρτλεϊ και ο Κατσίβελης είναι παίκτες που έχω συνεργαστεί στο παρελθόν και ξέρω περίπου τι μπορούν να δώσουν, οι υπόλοιποι είναι σχετικά καινούργιοι αλλά ποιοτικά καλοί.
Όλοι οι παίκτες είναι ισάξιοι, μπορεί κάποιοι από αυτούς να είναι καλύτεροι, όταν όμως έχεις ένα νούμερο παικτών στην αρχή σκέφτεσαι ότι είστε μια ενωμένη ομάδα και αυτή είναι η διαδικασία “χτισίματος” που είπαμε και προηγουμένως»
Για τους τίτλους που έχει κατακτήσει και για το αν έχει κάποιο διαφορετικό στόχο για τη φετινή σεζόν: «Όταν μιλάμε για στόχους έχουν να κάνουν με το αποτέλεσμα, διότι οι δικοί μου στόχοι πιθανόν να είναι διαφορετικοί. Έτσι όπως είναι η κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα που υπάρχουν δύο μεγάλες ομάδες που συνεχίζουν να ξεχωρίζουν, είτε από το νούμερο παικτών, είτε όσον αφορά το μπάτζετ ακόμα και στις διοργανώσεις που αγωνίζονται οι οποίες είναι πιο δυνατές, τότε ξεχνάς το βασικό στόχο, ο οποίος είναι να πάρεις το πρωτάθλημα και προσπαθείς να είσαι ανταγωνιστικός και όσο πιο κοντά σε αυτές τις δύο ομάδες.
Αυτός είναι σίγουρα ένας στόχος μας. Όμως ο τρόπος που παίζεται το μπάσκετ αλλάζει, εμείς το αλλάξαμε, πήγαμε σε ένα πιο transition παιχνίδι και είμαστε μαχητές στο γήπεδο. Δεν παρατήσαμε ποτέ ένα ματς που φαινόταν από την αρχή ότι δεν πάει καλά, το παλεύουμε μέχρι το τέλος. Με τα αθλητικά στοιχεία που έχουμε πιστεύω πως θα μπορούσαμε να το καταφέρουμε και πάλι αυτό φέτος.
Εμένα προσωπικά πάντα μου άρεσε να δουλεύω με τα νέα παιδιά, και αξίζει να βάζεις ένα νέο παιδί στην ομάδα και του χρόνου να το βλέπεις στα κολλέγια. Θέλω να έχουμε παίκτες με την προοπτική αυτή, ένα καινούργιο “όνομα”, έχουμε φέρει και ανά πάσα στιγμή θα το παρουσιάσουμε.
Το αν θα συνεχίσει στην πορεία μαζί μας δεν το γνωρίζω καθώς όλοι έχουν το δικαίωμα να φύγουν κάποια στιγμή. Δεύτερος στόχος είναι μια αναγνώριση και η ομάδα να παίζει με ένα στυλ που να αρέσει στον κόσμο, και πιστεύω ότι στη μέση της περυσινής χρονιάς το πετύχαμε και ο κόσμος ερχόταν να μας δει»
Για το τι είναι αυτό που του αρέσει από τη φετινή ομάδα μέχρι στιγμής: «Ότι είναι η ομάδα πιο physical και οι παίκτες πιο απαιτητικοί, διότι αυτό θεωρητικά είναι κάτι που φαίνεται, όμως στην πορεία πρέπει να φτιάξουμε και μια άμυνα που να δείξει αυτό το physicality που έχουμε και να μας βοηθήσει να έχουμε τα ίδια νούμερα με πέρυσι στο transition και το off ball game, που ήταν η πιο επιτυχημένη ενέργεια στον κόσμο»
Για τους στόχους της χρονιάς: «Να δημιουργήσουμε ένα παιχνίδι με ταχύτητα και με πιεστική άμυνα, με matchup στη ρακέτα και να γίνουμε πιο επιθετικοί, μην τρώμε τα εύκολα καλάθια και να μην κάνουμε βιαστικές επιλογές. Να παίζουμε με μυαλό και με τα προσόντα που έχουμε.
Σε αυτή τη διαδικασία βελτίωσης πάρα πολύ μεγάλο ρόλο θα έχει ο κόσμος. Πέρυσι ξεκίνησε το πρώτο παιχνίδι δυνατά και στη συνέχεια είχαμε αναταράξεις. Σίγουρα έφταιξε πρόβλημα με τους “μεγάλους”, όμως όταν ο κόσμος ξεκίνησε να έρχεται και να στηρίζει την προσπάθεια της ομάδας, ανεβήκαμε και εμείς. Κάτι παρόμοιο περιμένω και φέτος, να έρχεται ο κόσμος και να μας βοηθήσει σε αυτό το ταξίδι».
