Roland Garros: First final in Paris for Sabalenka (vids)

Aryna Sabalenka, with storming tennis in the 3rd set, “unhinged” Iga Swiatek and with 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0, after 2 hours and 19 minutes, advanced to her 1st final at Roland Garros.

This will be the 3rd consecutive major final for the world No. 1, after the US Open (2024) and the Australian Open (2025), but also the 6th overall in her career (surpassing Sfiodek’s 5), with the Belarusian aiming for her 4th Grand Slam.

For her part, the Pole lost in Paris after 26 games (1,457 days), with her last defeat being on June 9, 2021, in the quarterfinals, to Maria Sakkari.

Sabalenka, although tied in the 2nd set by Sfiodek, who at that point seemed to be moving better than the Belarusian, responded in the 3rd set with 24-6(!) points, ending the qualification with an impressive bagel.

Strong Sabalenka, balanced by Sfiodek

A 3-0 with 2 breaks was the best for Sabalenka at the beginning of the semifinal. Swiatek took back one of the 2 breaks (3-1), but found herself in the same position again after the new break from the world No. 1 (4-1).

From there, however, the 4-time Roland Garros champion managed to take the next 4 games and go ahead 5-4. Sabalenka responded with another break to make it 6-5, but again Sfiodek answered by leveling at 6-6.

The set went to a tie-break where Sabalenka was playing alone. Extremely aggressive and in coordination with the Pole's countless errors, she reached 7/1, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the 2nd set, it was Sfiodek's turn to take control. Sabalenka responded to the quick break she received by leveling at 1-1, but with another break and consecutive easy holds, Swiatek closed the set with 6-4, making it 1-1.

However, in the decider set, one player entered the court and it was Sabalenka. She conceded just 3 points on her serve, with Sfiodek taking just 3 of her own and in an emphatic way sealed her qualification for the 3rd consecutive Grand Slam final.

There she will play one of Lois Boisson and Cori Goff who will compete later in the day in the 2nd semifinal in history.

Η Αρίνα Σαμπαλένκα με καταιγιστικό τένις στο 3ο set “αποκαθήλωσε” την Ίγκα Σφιόντεκ και με 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-0, μετά από 2 ώρες και 19 λεπτά, πέρασε στον 1ο της τελικό στο Roland Garros. 

Αυτός θα είναι ο 3ος σερί major τελικός για την Νο1 του κόσμου, μετά το US Open (2024) και το Australian Open (2025), αλλά και ο 6ος συνολικά στην καριέρα της (ξεπερνώντας τους 5 της Σφιόντεκ), με τη Λευκορωσίδα να στοχεύει στο 4ο Grand Slam.

Από τη μεριά της η Πολωνή, έχασε στο Παρίσι μετά από 26 παιχνίδια (1.457 ημέρες), με την τελευταία της ήττα να είναι στις 9 Ιουνίου του 2021, στα προημιτελικά, από τη Μαρία Σάκκαρη. 

Η Σαμπαλένκα, αν και ισοφαρίστηκε στο 2ο set από τη Σφιόντεκ, η οποία σε εκείνο το σημείο έδειχνε να κινείται καλύτερα από τη Λευκορωσίδα, απάντησε στο 3ο set με 24-6(!) πόντους, τελειώνοντας την πρόκριση με έναν εντυπωσιακό bagel. 

Δυνατά η Σαμπαλένκα, ισορρόπησε η Σφιόντεκ 

Ένα 3-0 με 2 break, ήταν ό,τι καλύτερο για τη Σαμπαλένκα στην αρχή του ημιτελικού. Η Σφιόντεκ πήρε πίσω το ένα από τα 2 breaks (3-1), όμως βρέθηκε και πάλι στην ίδια θέση μετά το νέο break από τη Νο1 του κόσμου (4-1). 

Από εκεί και πέρα όμως η 4 φορές πρωταθλήτρια του Roland Garros, κατάφερε να πάρει τα επόμενα 4 games και να περάσει μπροστά με 5-4. Η Σαμπαλένκα απάντησε με ένα ακόμα break κάνοντας το 6-5, όμως και πάλι η Σφιόντεκ απάντησε ισοφαρίζοντας σε 6-6.

Το set πήγε στο tie-break εκεί όπου η Σαμπαλένκα έπαιζε μόνη της. Άκρως επιθετική και σε συδνυασμό με τα αμέτρητα λάθη της Πολωνής έφτασε στο 7/1 παίρνοντας προβάδισμα με 1-0.

Στο 2ο set ήταν η σειρά της Σφιόντεκ να πάρει τον έλεγχο. Η Σαμπαλένκα απάντησε στο γρήγορο break που δέχθηκε ισοφαρίζοντας σε 1-1, αλλά με νέο break και συνεχόμενα εύκολα holds η Σφιόντεκ έκλεισε το set με 6-4 κάνοντας το 1-1.

Ωστόσο, στο decider set, μια παίκτρια μπήκε στο court κι αυτή ήταν η Σαμπαλένκα. Παραχώρησε μόλις 3 πόντους στο service της, με τη Σφιόντεκ να παίρνει μόλις 3 από το δικό της και με έναν εμφατικό τρόπο σφράγισε την πρόκριση για τον 3ο σερί τελικό σε Grand Slam. 

Εκεί θα παίξει με μία εκ των Λοΐς Μπουασόν και Κόρι Γκοφ που θα αγωνιστούν αργότερα μέσα στη ημέρα στον 2ο χρονικά ημιτελικό.
