Jasmine Paolini made the big surprise in Paris, stopping one of the favorites to win Roland Garros, Elena Rybakina.
In a match that had a total of 12 breaks, the 28-year-old Italian (No.15) kept her composure and took a huge victory over the 24-year-old Kazakh (No.4) 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in 2 hours and 3 minutes, to qualify for the first major semi-final of her career.
And she did it in memorable fashion, as she kept her composure after losing the "hard" second set (despite being twice ahead with a break) and stormed into the third, where she broke three times in total to finally qualify.
Until 2023, Paolini had not gone beyond the second round of a Grand Slam, but she reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open (where she had never won a match) and is now making history at Roland Garros! Thus, this year Italy has both a woman and a man (Sinner) in the semi-finals of the competition.
With her progress in Paris, in fact, Paolini will also make a jump in the ranking, securing her first entry into the Top 10. If she eliminates Mira Andreeva or Arina Shamalenka in the semi-finals, then she will climb to No. 7 and Maria Sakkari (No. .8 in the live ranking) will drop to No.9.
It's worth noting that Rybakina committed 48 unforced errors and has advanced beyond the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam since last year's Australian Open.

Η Τζάσμιν Παολίνι έκανε τη μεγάλη έκπληξη στο Παρίσι, βάζοντας φρένο σε ένα από τα φαβορί για την κατάκτηση του Roland Garros, την Έλενα Ριμπάκινα.
Σε ένα ματς που είχε συνολικά 12 μπρέικ, η 28χρονη Ιταλίδα (Νο.15) διατήρησε την ψυχραιμία της και πήρε τεράστια νίκη επί της 24χρονης Καζάκας (Νο.4) με 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 σε 2 ώρες και 3 λεπτά, για να προκριθεί στον πρώτο major ημιτελικό της καριέρας της.
Και τα κατάφερε με αξιομνημόνευτο τρόπο, καθώς δεν έχασε τη αυτοκυριαρχία της μετά τη «σκληρή» απώλεια του δεύτερου σετ (παρότι προηγήθηκε δύο φορές με μπρέικ) και μπήκε δυνατά στο τρίτο, όπου πέτυχε συνολικά τρία μπρέικ για να φτάσει τελικά στην πρόκριση.
Μέχρι και το 2023 η Παολίνι δεν είχε πάει πέρα από δεύτερο γύρο Grand Slam, όμως έφτασε στη φάση των «16» του Australian Open (όπου δεν είχε κερδίσει ποτέ ματς) και γράφει τώρα ιστορία και στο Roland Garros! Έτσι, η Ιταλία έχει φέτος και γυναίκα και άνδρα (Σίνερ) στα ημιτελικά της διοργάνωσης.
Με την πορεία της στο Παρίσι, μάλιστα, η Παολίνι θα κάνει και άλμα στο ranking, εξασφαλίζοντας την πρώτη της είσοδο στο Top 10. Aν αποκλείσει Μίρα Αντρέεβα ή Αρίνα Σαμπαλένκα στα ημιτελικά, τότε θα σκαρφαλώσει στο Νο.7 και η Μαρία Σάκκαρη (Νο.8 στο live ranking) θα πέσει στο Νο.9.
Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η Ριμπάκινα υπέπεσε σε 48 αβίαστα λάθη και έχει να προχωρήσει πέρα από τα προημιτελικά σε Grand Slam από το περσινό Australian Open.
