A real derby in OAKA with Panathinaikos showing character and getting a very important victory with 88-85 against Virtus in overtime. Derrick Williams and Paris Lee with 26 and 15 points respectively stole the show.

88-85 triumph for Panathinaikos against Virtus Bologna, in the 9th matchday of the EuroLeague with the greens breaking out with a 14-0 run in the third period to take the momentum and stay upright in the suffocating pressure of the Italians who led the match to overtime, but they left OAKA empty-handed.

Somehow, Dejan Radonic's team improved their record to 3-6, counting two consecutive victories at home. For their part, the Italians fell to 4-5.

The MVP

Derrick Williams rightly wins the MVP award after scoring 26 points on 5/7 2-pointers, 5/8 3-pointers, 1/2 shots and 8 rebounds in 39'04" of time on the floor. The American forward even put in the pivotal three-pointer for the pass 15" before the end of extra time. In addition to Williams, Paris Lee also had a starring role, getting a boost from his mother's presence in the stands. The American guard offered 15 points (2/6 2-pointers, 3/6 3-pointers, 2/2 shots), 2 rebounds and 3 assists.

The weak link

Cordinier was Virtus' weak link, failing to contribute anything substantial in the almost 24 minutes he played, as he was absent (0/3 shots).

The statistic that stood out

The only 7 mistakes that the greens committed in 45 minutes played their role in the outcome of the match, as Virtus doubled their chances and even some of them at very crucial points.

The race

Panathinaikos led 6-3 in the third minute, but was held scoreless until the 7th minute, allowing Virtus to go on a 12-0 run to make it 15-6. The first period finally found the guests at +9 (21-12), with the greens having all 3/15 shots inside the field.

The Greens improved noticeably on both ends of the floor in the second quarter, closing to within 3 points (41-38) before the break, with Walters and Bacon carrying the offense with 10 and 9 points respectively. On the other hand, Jaite and Ojeleye did damage, with 10 points each.

The Shamrocks had a great stretch in the third period going on a 14-0 run to lead by 7 (62-55, 28'30"). However, at that point Dejan Radonic was charged with a technical penalty and Milos Teodosic stepped up. scoring seven points with two 3-pointers, but Derrick Williams had the last word before the 30-minute mark, making it 67-62 with a shot from the perimeter.

The tempo dropped considerably from 30' to 36'. Sergio Scariolo's team took advantage of two mistakes by the Panathinaikos defense and came within a breathing distance (74-73) 2'39" before the final. A mistake by Papagianni and a missed shot by Bacon followed. Somewhere there, Teodosic made a three-pointer knife and gave Virtus the lead again (76-74) with 85" left on the clock. It was Lee who tied the game at 76-76, Teodosic got a three-pointer, but luckily for Panathinaikos, he missed the target. In fact, Panathinaikos went on to make an impressive finale with Lee getting up for three behind the center, but finding the ball in the hoop and the match going into overtime.

The extra five minutes was a real derby not for the faint of heart. The two teams were tied three times. Derrick Williams in cold blood made it 86-85 with his fifth three-pointer 15" before the end of overtime. Panathinaikos chose to play defense and was vindicated after Lundberg committed an offensive foul. Lee was the one who put the icing on the cake. on the cake with two well-aimed shots.

Ο MVP

Ο Ντέρικ Γουίλιαμς κερδίζει δικαίως το βραβείο του MVP αφού πέτυχε 26 πόντους με 5/7 δίποντα, 5/8 τρίποντα, 1/2 βολές και 8 ριμπάουντ σε 39'04" που χρειάστηκε να μείνει στο παρκέ. Ο Αμερικανός φόργουορντ έβαλε μάλιστα και το κομβικό τρίποντο για το προσπέρασμα 15" πριν την ολοκλήρωση του έξτρα χρόνου. Πέραν του Γουίλιαμς, ο Πάρις Λι είχε επίσης πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο, παίρνοντας ώθηση από την παρουσία της μητέρας του τις εξέδρες. Ο Αμερικανός γκαρντ προσέφερε 15 πόντους (2/6 δίποντα, 3/6 τρίποντα, 2/2 βολές), 2 ριμπάουντ και 3 ασίστ.

Ο αδύναμος κρίκος

Ο Κορντινιέ ήταν ο αδύναμος κρίκος της Βίρτους, μη καταφέρνοντας να προσφέρει κάτι ουσιαστικό στα σχεδόν 24 αγωνιστικά λεπτά που πήρε, καθώς έμεινε άποντος (0/3 σουτ).

Το στατιστικό που ξεχώρισε

Τα μόλις 7 λάθη στα οποία υπέπεσαν οι πράσινοι σε 45 λεπτά έπαιξαν το ρόλο τους στην έκβαση του αγώνα, καθώς η Βίρτους έκανε τα διπλάσια και μάλιστα κάποια εξ' αυτών σε πολύ κρίσιμα σημεία.

Ο Αγώνας

Ο Παναθηναϊκός προηγήθηκε με 6-3 στο τρίτο λεπτό, όμως έμεινε χωρίς σκορ μέχρι το 7', επιτρέποντας στη Βίρτους να τρέξει ένα σερί 12-0 για το 15-6. Η πρώτη περίοδος βρήκε τελικά τους φιλοξενούμενος στο +9 (21-12), με τους πράσινους να έχουν όλα κι όλα 3/15 σουτ εντός πεδιάς.

Οι πράσινοι βελτιώθηκαν αισθητά στις δύο πλευρές του παρκέ στο δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο, πλησιάζοντας στους 3 πόντους (41-38) πριν την ανάπαυλα, με τους Γουόλτερς και Μπέικον να κουβαλάνε στην επίθεση έχοντας 10 και 9 πόντους αντίστοιχα. Στον αντίποδα, ζημιά έκαναν οι Τζαϊτέ και Οτζελέγιε, με 10 πόντους έκαστος.

Το τριφύλλι είχε ένα εξαιρετικό διάστημα στην τρίτη περίοδο τρέχοντας σερί 14-0 για να προηγηθεί με 7 (62-55, 28'30"). Ωστόσο, σε εκείνο το σημείο ο Ντέγιαν Ράντονιτς χρεώθηκε με τεχνική ποινή και ο Μίλος Τεόντοσιτς πήρε μπρος, βάζοντας επτά πόντους με δύο εύστοχα τρίποντα. Ο Ντέρικ Γουίλιαμς είπε όμως την τελευταία κουβέντα πριν τη συμπλήρωση 30 λεπτών, γράφοντας το 67-62 με σουτ από την περιφέρεια.

Το τέμπο έπεσε αρκετά από το 30' έως και το 36'. Η ομάδα του Σέρτζιο Σκαριόλο εκμεταλλεύτηκε κάνα δύο αστοχίες της άμυνας του Παναθηναϊκού και πλησίασε σε απόσταση αναπνοής (74-73) 2'39" πριν το φινάλε. Ακολούθησαν ένα λάθος του Παπαγιάννη και ένα άστοχο σουτ του Μπέικον. Κάπου εκεί ο Τεόντοσιτς έβαλε μια τρίποντη μαχαιριά και έδωσε ξανά προβάδισμα στη Βίρτους (76-74) με 85" να μένουν στο χρονόμετρο. Ο Λι ήταν αυτός που ισοφάρισε σε 76-76, ο Τεόντοσιτς πήρε ένα τρίποντο, αλλά για καλή τύχη του Παναθηναϊκού δεν βρήκε στόχο. Μάλιστα, ο Παναθηναϊκός πήγε να κάνει εντυπωσιακό φινάλε με τον Λι να σηκώνεται για τρεις πίσω από το κέντρο, αλλά την μπάλα να βρίσκει στη στεφάνη και το ματς να οδηγείται σε παράταση.

Το έξτρα πεντάλεπτο ήταν πραγματικό ντέρμπι ακατάλληλο για καρδιακούς. Οι δύο ομάδες βρέθηκαν ισόπαλες τρεις φορές.
