Greece - Turkey 72-71: Redemption at 3 '' with Papanikolaou

Turkey came a breath away from the victory in Ano Liossia, but the 2/2 shots of Costas Papanikolaou at 3 '' for the end were enough to bring the "ace" of Ethniki (72-71) in a game - thriller for the World Cup qualifiers.

Costas Papanikolaou proved to be as cool as he needed to be, he scored two shots in 3 '' for the end and gave Ethniki the victory against Turkey (72-71) in a thriller indoor game of Ano Liossia. The guests were a breath away from the double, but the 31-year-old forward took advantage of the foul that was done to him and gave the victory to our representative team, with the 2/2 shots he had.

In the last possession of the match, Shane Larkin took the responsibility, but the shot he attempted from the corner, ended up in the iron, with the victory ending up on the Greek side.

The two teams will meet again on the afternoon of Monday, February 28 in Istanbul, with Turkey now in the role of host.

The MVP

From the moment he had the composure to put two shots at 3 '' for the end, with the pressure weighing on his shoulders, Costas Papanikolaou deservedly wins the title of the most valuable. The 31-year-old forward scored some of the most crucial shots of his career, given the importance of this game for the National Team. In the 30'24 '' he remained on the floor, he had 10 points (with 2/3 two points, 1/4 three points, 3/3 shots), 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Together, he played many great defenses against the Turkish players.

The weak link

Oguz Savas started in the top five of Turkey, but found it (very) dark but against George Papagiannis. He was quickly loaded with two fouls, returned to take the third with brief procedures and remain on the bench until the final, unable to do anything important in the 12'16 '' he played.

The statistic that stood out

The National team missed a goal from the periphery, finishing the match with 8/28 three-pointers. The internationals started with 1/8 from the periphery, they scored four three-pointers in the second ten minutes, but in the third and fourth they were again off target.

The race

The National team did not start the game well, it had problems in defense and attack, failing to find a functional five during the first period. Turkey took advantage of the event and with eight unanswered points was at +5 (7-12) with Melich Mahmutoglou doing a great job. Overall, the visitors were clearly superior until the 11th minute, when they were at +10 (13-23) for the first time. The remarkable thing, of course, was that they did it, while Shane Larkin was on the bench.

Somewhere there, however, the switch turned. Sotiris Manolopoulos shuffled the deck and with Giorgos Papagiannis making the difference on both sides of the floor, Ethniki brought the ups and downs. Very quickly, the lead passed into Greek hands, with the two three-pointers by Kostas Sloukas (within a few seconds in fact) creating the +7 (37-30) just before the final of the first part. The break finally found our representative band at +8 (40-32).

The third ten minutes had great contrasts, with an excellent four minutes for each team. Ethniki started in an impressive way, found in the person of Costas Sloukas the creator they needed and reached +15 (52-37 in 24 '), at a point where Greece seemed capable and ready to "finish" the game in an hour earlier. The guests did not give up, however, Shane Larkin started to pass (extremely) the ball and within four minutes everything came to a head. The +15 of Ethniki made wings, with the "X" (56-56) of the 29th minute transferring the pressure to the Greek side.

From there, everything was fluid. It was obvious that the players of Sotiris Manolopoulos no longer had the strength to take advantage of their outbursts. Even when the double-digit lead returned (66-56 in 34 '), Turkey was "there" to re-declare its presence. Melih Mahmutoglu wore the mantle of the leader and with his own points brought back the team of Orhun Ene in a position to have every right to hope for the double (66-67 in 37 ').

Now, everything was hanging on a thread with the lead changing hands several times, with Costas Sloukas on the one hand and Sein Larkin on the other "running" the most critical possessions of the race. In fact, with shots of the second, Turkey maintained the lead (70-71) with one minute for the end.

Both teams lost from an possession in the last minute, Costas Papanikolaou proved to be extremely cool, however, when he won a foul -for shots- at 3 '' for the final. The 31-year-old forward was unmistakable from the line and gave the victory to Greece, after immediately after the three-pointer by Shane Larkin from the corner ended up in the iron.

Η Τουρκία έφτασε μια ανάσα μακριά από τη νίκη στα Άνω Λιόσια, αλλά οι 2/2 βολές του Κώστα Παπανικολάου στα 3'' για το τέλος αρκούσαν για να φέρουν τον "άσο" της Εθνικής (72-71) σε ένα παιχνίδι - θρίλερ για τα προκριματικά του Παγκοσμίου Κυπέλλου.

Ο Κώστας Παπανικολάου αποδείχθηκε όσο ψύχραιμος χρειαζόταν, έβαλε δύο βολές στα 3'' για το τέλος και χάρισε στην Εθνική τη νίκη απέναντι στην Τουρκία (72-71) σε παιχνίδι - θρίλερ στο κλειστό των Άνω Λιοσίων. Οι φιλοξενούμενοι ήταν μια ανάσα μακριά από το διπλό, ο 31χρονος φόργουορντ εκμεταλλεύτηκε όμως το φάουλ που του έγινε και έδωσε τη νίκη στο αντιπροσωπευτικό μας συγκρότημα, με τις 2/2 βολές που είχε.

Στην τελευταία κατοχή του αγώνα, ο Σέιν Λάρκιν πήρε την ευθύνη, το σουτ που επιχείρησε από τη γωνία όμως, κατέληξε στο σίδερο, με τη νίκη να καταλήγει στην ελληνική πλευρά.

Οι δύο ομάδες θα ξανασυναντηθούν το απόγευμα της Δευτέρας 28 Φεβρουαρίου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, με την Τουρκία πλέον σε ρόλο γηπεδούχου.

Θυμίζουμε πως ο άλλος αγώνας της ημέρας για τον όμιλο, αυτός ανάμεσα σε Λευκορωσία και Μεγάλη Βρετανία, αναβλήθηκε λόγω της κατάστασης που επικρατεί στην ευρύτερη περιοχή.

Ο MVP

Από την στιγμή που είχε την ψυχραιμία να βάλει δύο βολές στα 3'' για το τέλος, με την πίεση να βαραίνει τους ώμους του, ο Κώστας Παπανικολάου κερδίζει επάξια τον τίτλο του πολυτιμότερου. Ο 31χρονος φόργουορντ έβαλε μερικές από τις πιο κρίσιμες βολές της καριέρας του, δεδομένης της σημασίας που είχε αυτό το παιχνίδι για την Εθνική. Στα 30'24'' που έμεινε στο παρκέ, είχε 10 πόντους (με 2/3 δίποντα, 1/4 τρίποντα, 3/3 βολές), 4 ριμπάουντ και 3 ασίστ. Μαζί, έπαιξε πολλές σπουδαίες άμυνες πάνω στους παίκτες της Τουρκίας.

Ο αδύναμος κρίκος

Ο Ογκιούζ Σαβάς ξεκίνησε στην αρχική πεντάδα της Τουρκίας, τα βρήκε (πολύ) σκούρα όμως απέναντι στον Γιώργο Παπαγιάννη. Φορτώθηκε γρήγορα με δύο φάουλ, επέστρεψε για να πάρει το τρίτο με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες και να παραμείνει στον πάγκο μέχρι το φινάλε, αδυνατώντας να κάνει κάτι σημαντικό στα 12'16'' που αγωνίστηκε.

Το στατιστικό που ξεχώρισε

Η Εθνική ήταν άστοχη από την περιφέρεια, ολοκληρώνοντας τον αγώνα με 8/28 τρίποντα. Οι διεθνείς ξεκίνησαν με 1/8 από την περιφέρεια, έβαλαν τέσσερα τρίποντα στο δεύτερο δεκάλεπτο, αλλά στο τρίτο και το τέταρτο ήταν ξανά άστοχοι.

Ο αγώνας

Η Εθνική δεν ξεκίνησε καλά το παιχνίδι, είχε προβλήματα σε άμυνα και επίθεση, αδυνατώντας να βρει μια λειτουργική πεντάδα στη διάρκεια της πρώτης περιόδου. Η Τουρκία εκμεταλλεύτηκε το γεγονός και με οκτώ αναπάντητους πόντους βρέθηκε στο +5 (7-12) με τον Μελίχ Μαχμούτογλου να κάνει σπουδαία δουλειά. Συνολικά, οι φιλοξενούμενοι ήταν εμφανώς ανώτεροι μέχρι το 11ο λεπτό, οπότε βρέθηκαν στο +10 (13-23) για πρώτη φορά. Το αξιοσημείωτο βέβαια ήταν πως τα κατάφεραν, ενόσω ο Σέιν Λάρκιν βρισκόταν στον πάγκο.

Κάπου εκεί όμως, γύρισε ο διακόπτης. Ο Σωτήρης Μανωλόπουλος ανακάτεψε την τράπουλα και με τον Γιώργο Παπαγιάννη να κάνει τη διαφορά στις δύο πλευρές του παρκέ, η Εθνική έφερε τα πάνω κάτω. Πολύ γρήγορα, το προβάδισμα πέρασε σε ελληνικά χέρια, με τα δύο τρίποντα του Κώστα Σλούκα (εντός μερικών δευτερολέπτων μάλιστα) να δημιουργούν το +7 (37-30) λίγο πριν από το φινάλε του πρώτου μέρους. Η ανάπαυλα βρήκε εν τέλει το αντιπροσωπευτικό μας συγκρότημα στο +8 (40-32).

Το τρίτο δεκάλεπτο είχε μεγάλες αντιθέσεις, με ένα εξαιρετικό τετράλεπτο για κάθε ομάδα. Η Εθνική ξεκίνησε με εντυπωσιακό τρόπο, βρήκε στο πρόσωπο του Κώστα Σλούκα τον δημιουργό που χρειαζόταν και έφτασε μέχρι το +15 (52-37 στο 24'), σε ένα σημείο που η Ελλάδα έδειχνε ικανή και έτοιμη να "τελειώσει" το παιχνίδι μια ώρα αρχύτερα. Οι φιλοξενούμενοι δεν τα παράτησαν όμως, ο Σέιν Λάρκιν άρχισε να πασάρει (εξαιρετικά) την μπάλα και μέσα σε τέσσερα λεπτά όλα ήρθαν τούμπα. Το +15 της Εθνικής έκανε φτερά, με το "Χ" (56-56) του 29ου λεπτού να μεταφέρει την πίεση στην ελληνική πλευρά.

Από εκεί και πέρα, όλα ήταν ρευστά. Ήταν εμφανές άλλωστε πως οι παίκτες του Σωτήρη Μανωλόπουλου δεν είχαν πλέον τις δυνάμεις για να εκμεταλλευτούν τα ξεσπάσματά τους. Ακόμη κι όταν επανήλθε το διψήφιο προβάδισμα (66-56 στο 34'), η Τουρκία ήταν "εκεί" για να ξαναδηλώσει παρούσα. Ο Μελίχ Μαχμούτογλου φόρεσε τον μανδύα του ηγέτη και με δικούς του πόντους επανέφερε την ομάδα του Ορχούν Ενέ σε θέση να έχει κάθε δικαίωμα να ελπίζει στο διπλό (66-67 στο 37').

Πλέον, όλα κρέμονταν σε μια κλωστή με το προβάδισμα να αλλάζει αρκετές φορές χέρια, με τον Κώστα Σλούκα από τη μία και τον Σέιν Λάρκιν από την άλλη να "τρέχουν" τις πιο κρίσιμες κατοχές του αγώνα. Με βολές του δεύτερου μάλιστα, η Τουρκία διατήρησε το προβάδισμα (70-71) με ένα λεπτό για το τέλος.

Οι δύο ομάδες έχασαν από μια κατοχή στο τελευταίο λεπτό, ο Κώστας Παπανικολάου αποδείχθηκε εξαιρετικά ψύχραιμος όμως, όταν κέρδισε φάουλ -για βολές- στα 3'' για το φινάλε. Ο 31χρονος φόργουορντ ήταν αλάνθαστος από την γραμμή και χάρισε τη νίκη στην Ελλάδα, αφού αμέσως μετά το τρίποντο του Σέιν Λάρκιν από τη γωνία κατέληξε στο σίδερο.
