This was the decision taken at today's (25/5) meeting between the 11 teams of the EuroLeague with a guaranteed contract and Jordi Bertomeu, following a proposal submitted by the executive director of the event and the vast majority of the teams to agree.

Bertomeu told a news conference last April that he would not hesitate to cancel permanently this year if necessary. This is exactly what happened, with the CEO of the EuroLeague proposing a permanent suspension at the start of the season and the teams agreeing to the ELPA (EuroLeague Players' Union) requesting its final suspension in writing. season.

Bertomeu has been looking for a location in recent weeks to bring the teams together and organize the games there until the final. He looked at Belgrade, which said he was ready, became interested in Athens and listened to Thessaloniki, looked at Kaunas and Vilnius, and even saw Mallorca express interest, but also some other destinations that eventually "cut" along the way, but the problems were many. and the obstacles proved insurmountable.

The letter from ELPA, the voices of players such as Shane Larkin, Mike James and Casey River, the dangers due to the coroner's pandemic, the fear of a serious injury for the players and the fact that in order to complete the tournament they had to be found in a group of teams from 10 different countries, all of which played their part in the final decision of the teams.

Some teams, including Olympiacos, have returned to training even at a slower pace with the goal of regaining some of the much-lost ground of the last two months. It turned out that they would not need to turn upside down, as the EuroLeague was over, the season was canceled and everyone hopes that time will help so that at the beginning of the 2020/21 season there is some regularity. Even without spectators.

Αυτή ήταν η απόφαση που πάρθηκε στην σημερινή (25/5) σύσκεψη ανάμεσα στις 11 ομάδες της EuroLeague με εγγυημένο συμβόλαιο και τον Ζόρντι Μπερτομέου, έπειτα από πρόταση που κατέθεσε ο εκτελεστικός διευθυντής της διοργάνωσης και την συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των ομάδων να συμφωνούν.

Ο Μπερτομέου είχε αναφέρει στη συνέντευξη Τύπου τον περασμένο Απρίλιο ότι δεν θα διστάσει να ακυρώσει οριστικά τη φετινή περίοδο αν χρειαστεί. Αυτό ακριβώς έγινε, με τον εκτελεστικό διευθυντή της EuroLeague να κάνει την πρόταση για την οριστική διακοπή της σεζόν στο ξεκίνημα της σύσκεψης και τις ομάδες να συμφωνούν, προς ικανοποίηση και της ELPA (Ένωση παικτών της EuroLeague) που είχε ζητήσει με επιστολή την οριστική διακοπή της σεζόν.

Ο Μπερτομέου τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες αναζήτησε μια τοποθεσία για να συγκεντρώσει τις ομάδες και να οργανώσει εκεί τους αγώνες μέχρι τον τελικό. Εξέτασε το Βελιγράδι που δήλωνε πανέτοιμο, ενδιαφέρθηκε για την Αθήνα και άκουσε τη Θεσσαλονίκη, κοίταξε το Κάουνας και το Βίλνιους, είδε μέχρι και τη Μαγιόρκα να εκφράζει ενδιαφέρον, αλλά και μερικούς ακόμη προορισμούς που τελικά "κόπηκαν" στην πορεία, όμως τα προβλήματα ήταν πολλά και τα εμπόδια αποδείχθηκαν αξεπέραστα.

Η επιστολή της ELPA, οι φωνές παικτών όπως ο Σέιν Λάρκιν, ο Μάικ Τζέιμς και ο Κέισι Ρίβερ, οι κίνδυνοι λόγω της πανδημίας του κορονοϊού, ο φόβος κάποιου σοβαρού τραυματισμού για τους παίκτες και το γεγονός ότι για να ολοκληρωθεί η διοργάνωση έπρεπε να βρεθούν σε ένα μέρος ομάδες από 10 διαφορετικές χώρες, όλα αυτά έπαιξαν τον ρόλο τους στην τελική απόφαση των ομάδων. 

Κάποιες ομάδες, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο Ολυμπιακός, γύρισαν στις προπονήσεις έστω και σε πιο χαλαρούς ρυθμούς με στόχο να ανακτήσουν λίγο από το πολύ χαμένο έδαφος των τελευταίων δύο και πλέον μηνών. Αποδείχθηκε τελικά πως δεν θα χρειαστεί να ανεβάσουν στροφές, καθώς η EuroLeague ολοκληρώθηκε, η σεζόν ακυρώθηκε και όλοι ελπίζουν ότι ο χρόνος θα βοηθήσει ώστε στις αρχές της περιόδου 2020/21 να υπάρχει μια κάποια κανονικότητα. Εστω και χωρίς θεατές.
