Epic battle in Bologna, epic double of Olympiacos that despite the fact that it squandered a 20-point lead, in the end took the victory over Virtus (97-94) in the match of the 18th round of the EuroLeague.
Olympiacos needed a big away victory and celebrated it on Friday night (26/12) in Bologna, against Virtus (97-94), for the 18th round of the EuroLeague.
Piraeus climbed to 10-7 (6-3 home and 4-4 away), with Giorgos Bartzokas using a rotation of ten players and taking many from many. From Evan Fournier and Sasha Vezenkov, from Alec Peters and Nikola Milutinov, from Kostas Papanikolaou.
Solid defensively and with good ball circulation, Olympiacos built its psychology ahead of OAKA (2/1 at 21:15), while it will also have several days of rest and work as it will have its day off at Stoiximan GBL.
Virtus fell to 8-10 (6-2 home and 2-8 away), which was full and counterattacked from -20 (57-77). Carsen Edwards was hot in the first quarter, but from then on Olympiacos found a way to slow him down. In the final, Alston missed a three-pointer, which would have sent the game to overtime.
The match
With Walkup, Dorsey, Papanikolaou, Vezenkov, Milutinov, Olympiacos opened the match, which had problems marking Edwards, saw Walkup charged with two fouls early and did not find a chance to build a small gap. Instead, the home team scored in transition (18-15 at 7′), with Fournier tying at 20-20 with a shot from the perimeter towards the end of the period (25-23).
Fournier was hot, he also made a third three-pointer for 32-37 at 13′ as Bartzokas had Nilikina, Dorsey, Peters, Hall around him. Olympiacos saw the home team complete the team goals early, took shots, could have avoided some mistakes and built a bigger lead, but the 41-50 halftime score was pleasant, especially with the red-and-whites coach relying on a rotation of ten players and essentially two fives.
Olympiacos entered the second half with Fournier in place of Dorsey, had amazing partnerships with Milutinov’s hands combining spectacle with substance, saw the Serbian center take shots and a two-pointer for 53-69 in the 27th minute. Dorsey and Fournier continued to score in quick succession for 57-77 in the 29th minute, but the match was not decided.
Walkap's five-foul ejection and a 10-0 run by the Italians led to 72-80, with Bartzoka bringing Vezenkov and Milutinov back in the 33rd minute. The gap fell to four (84-88) thanks to incredible three-pointers by Vildosa, with Dorsey making an incredible mistake and the home team taking a surprise 88-90 lead at 1:41.
Dorsey, with a stunning mid-range shot, made it 92-95, Diouf nailed it for 94-95 in 8.6″, Peters made shots for 94-97 and with 3″ left, Virtus gave the ball to Alston who came out from four meters for a three-pointer, executed but did not find the rim.

Επική μάχη στην Μπολόνια, επικό διπλό του Ολυμπιακού που παρά το γεγονός ότι σπατάλησε προβάδισμα 20 πόντων, πήρε στο τέλος την νίκη επί της Βίρτους (97-94) στο ματς της 18ης αγωνιστικής της EuroLeague.
Μια μεγάλη εκτός έδρας νίκη είχε ανάγκη ο Ολυμπιακός και την πανηγύρισε το βράδυ της Παρασκευής (26/12) στην Μπολόνια, απέναντι στην Βίρτους (97-94), για την 18η αγωνιστική της EuroLeague.
Στο 10-7 ανέβηκαν οι Πειραιώτες (6-3 εντός και 4-4 εκτός έδρας), με τον Γιώργο Μπαρτζώκα να χρησιμοποιεί ροτέισον δέκα παικτών και να παίρνει πολλά από πολλούς. Από τον Εβάν Φουρνιέ και τον Σάσα Βεζένκοβ, από τον Άλεκ Πίτερς και τον Νίκολα Μιλουτίνοβ, από τον Κώστα Παπανικολάου.
Συμπαγής αμυντικά και με καλή κυκλοφορία της μπάλας, ο Ολυμπιακός έφτιαξε την ψυχολογία του εν όψει ΟΑΚΑ (2/1 στις 21:15), ενώ θα έχει και αρκετές ημέρες ξεκούρασης και δουλειάς καθώς θα κάνει το ρεπό του στη Stoiximan GBL.
Στο 8-10 έπεσε η Βίρτους (6-2 εντός και 2-8 εκτός έδρας), που ήταν πλήρης και έκανε αντεπίθεση από το -20 (57-77). Ο Κάρσεν Έντουαρντς ήταν καυτός στο πρώτο δεκάλεπτο, από εκεί και πέρα όμως ο Ολυμπιακός βρήκε τρόπο για να τον φρενάρε. Στο φινάλε ο Άλστον αστόχησε σε τρίποντο, που θα έστελνε το παιχνίδι στην παράταση.
Ο αγώνας
Με Γουόκαπ, Ντόρσεϊ, Παπανικολάου, Βεζένκοβ, Μιλουτίνοβ άνοιξε το ματς ο Ολυμπιακός, που είχε πρόβλημα στο μαρκάρισμα του Έντουαρντς, είδε τον Γουόκαπ να χρεώνεται νωρίς με δύο φάουλ και δεν βρήκε μια ευκαιρία να χτίσει μια μικρή διαφορά. Αντ’ αυτού, οι γηπεδούχοι σκόραραν στο τρανζίσιον (18-15 στο 7′), με τον Φουρνιέ να ισοφαρίζει στο 20-20 με σουτ από την περιφέρεια προς το τέλος της περιόδου (25-23).
Ο Φουρνιέ ήταν ζεστός, έβαλε και τρίτο τρίποντο για το 32-37 στο 13′ καθώς ο Μπαρτζώκας είχε Νιλικίνα, Ντόρσεϊ, Πίτερς, Χολ γύρω του. Ο Ολυμπιακός είδε τους γηπεδούχους να συμπληρώνουν τα ομαδικά νωρίς, έβαλε τις βολές, μπορούσε να αποφύγει κάποια λάθη και να χτίσει μεγαλύτερο προβάδισμα, όμως το 41-50 ημιχρόνου ήταν ευχάριστο και μάλιστα με τον προπονητή των ερυθρόλευκων να έχει στηριχθεί σε ροτέισον δέκα παικτών και επί της ουσίας σε δύο πεντάδες.
Ο Ολυμπιακός μπήκε στο β’ μέρος με τον Φουρνιέ στη θέση του Ντόρσεϊ, είχε εκπληκτικές συνεργασίες με τα χέρια του Μιλουτίνοβ να συνδυάζουν το θέαμα με την ουσία, είδε τον Σέρβο σέντερ να βάζει βολές και δίποντο για το 53-69 στο 27′. Ντόρσεϊ και Φουρνιέ συνέχισαν να σκοράρουν κατά ριπάς για το 57-77 στο 29′, όμως το ματς δεν είχε κριθεί.
Η αποβολή του Γουόκαπ με πέντε φάουλ και ένα σερί 10-0 των Ιταλών οδήγησαν στο 72-80, με τον Μπαρτζώκα να επαναφέρει Βεζένκοβ και Μιλουτίνοβ στο 33′. Η διαφορά έπεσε μέχρι τους τέσσερις (84-88) χάρη σε απίθανα τρίποντα του Βιλντόσα, με τον Ντόρσεϊ να κάνει απίστευτο λάθος και τους γηπεδούχους να βγάζουν αιφνιδιασμό για το 88-90 στο 1:41.
Ο Ντόρσεϊ με εκπληκτική εκτέλεση από μέση απόσταση έκανε το 92-95, ο Ντιουφ κάρφωσε για το 94-95 στα 8.6″, ο Πίτερς έβαλε βολές για το 94-97 και στα 3″ που έμειναν, η Βίρτους έδωσε τη μπάλα στον Άλστον που βγήκε από τα τέσσερα μέτρα στο τρίποντο, εκτέλεσε αλλά δεν βρήκε στεφάνη.
