Anfield out of Euro 2028 due to... dimensions

Although England will be one of the main organizing countries of Euro 2028, one of its most historic and recognizable stadiums, Anfield, will not be included in UEFA's selections.

The European Championship will be hosted in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, while the main dates were announced on Wednesday (12/11): the competition will start on June 9 and will end a month later, on July 9, with the grand final at Wembley.

The stadiums selected include Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Etihad, Villa Park, St. James' Park and Everton's new stadium, Hill Dickinson Stadium.

However, the absence of Anfield, one of the most popular stadiums in the country and home of Liverpool, is striking. Despite its large capacity, which exceeds 60,000 seats, it does not meet a crucial UEFA requirement: the correct dimensions of the playing field.

The required dimensions for Euro matches are 105 x 68 meters, but the length of the turf at "Anfield" is only 101 meters. This difference makes it impossible to adapt the stadium to the standards of the competition, resulting in its exclusion from the list.

Παρότι η Αγγλία θα αποτελέσει μία από τις βασικές διοργανώτριες χώρες του Euro 2028, ένα από τα πιο ιστορικά και αναγνωρίσιμα γήπεδά της, το «Άνφιλντ», δεν θα συμπεριληφθεί στις επιλογές της UEFA.

Το ευρωπαϊκό πρωτάθλημα θα φιλοξενηθεί σε Αγγλία, Ιρλανδία, Σκωτία και Ουαλία, ενώ οι βασικές ημερομηνίες έγιναν γνωστές την Τετάρτη (12/11): η διοργάνωση θα ξεκινήσει στις 9 Ιουνίου και θα ολοκληρωθεί έναν μήνα αργότερα, στις 9 Ιουλίου, με τον μεγάλο τελικό στο «Γουέμπλεϊ».

Στα γήπεδα που επιλέχθηκαν περιλαμβάνονται το «Tottenham Hotspur Stadium», το «Etihad», το «Villa Park», το «St. James’ Park» και το νέο γήπεδο της Έβερτον, το «Hill Dickinson Stadium».

Ωστόσο, εντύπωση προκαλεί η απουσία του «Άνφιλντ», ενός από τα πιο δημοφιλή γήπεδα της χώρας και έδρας της Λίβερπουλ. Παρά τη μεγάλη χωρητικότητά του, που ξεπερνά τις 60.000 θέσεις, δεν πληροί ένα κρίσιμο προαπαιτούμενο της UEFA: τις σωστές διαστάσεις του αγωνιστικού χώρου.

Η απαιτούμενη διάσταση για αγώνες του Euro είναι 105 x 68 μέτρα, όμως το μήκος του χλοοτάπητα στο «Άνφιλντ» είναι μόλις 101 μέτρα. Η διαφορά αυτή καθιστά αδύνατη την προσαρμογή του γηπέδου στα πρότυπα της διοργάνωσης, με αποτέλεσμα να αποκλειστεί από τη λίστα.
