From conflict to negotiation. UEFA and the European Super League are in talks with the aim of improving the Champions League, with the latter having submitted a final “peace” proposal for a partnership.

UEFA, A22, which is the company that represents the European Super League, and representatives of Barcelona and Real Madrid have been conducting confidential negotiations for the last eight months with the ultimate goal of reaching an agreement regarding the Champions League that will satisfy all parties.

These talks have matured, bringing the interested parties closer to an agreement on a new reform of the format of the top inter-club competition. Furthermore, the purpose of these contacts is to avoid the possibility of implementing a separatist plan that would cause wounds to the sport.

In fact, according to information from Mundo Deportivo, the European Super League has submitted to UEFA a final “peace” proposal that includes two main points.

On the one hand, the creation of a global platform for free broadcasting of matches and on the other hand, a revised organization system, which would reflect the current Champions League system, but adding a seemingly more lively touch.

For its part, A22 proposes improving the structure of the current system, which, according to itself, continues to create imbalances in the League Phase. Specifically, the new proposal submitted to UEFA introduces a small but important adjustment.

The 36 clubs currently competing in the Champions League will be divided into two groups:

Group 1 (teams ranked 1-18 according to the UEFA coefficient): they will play 8 matches against top opponents (for example, important matches such as Barcelona vs. Paris).

Group 2 (teams ranked 19-36): they will also play 8 matches, but in a more balanced series of matches, determined by draw as in the current system.

The matches will be based on ranking, for example, the 9th team in Group 1 will face the lowest-ranked team from Group 2.

This structure aims to raise the standard of the group stage with more important matches, while giving the teams ranked 19-36 a real chance to reach the top of the competition.

The European Super League is proposing to broadcast the competition - which will retain the Champions League name - via streaming platform UNIFY, with the aim of upgrading the fan experience by offering easier and more affordable access to content.

The service will be available in two versions: a free option with ads tailored to the user's location and a premium subscription, which will offer unlimited viewing without advertising interruptions.

UEFA is said to be looking positively at the project, considering that such a move can modernize broadcasts and generate higher revenues than the current model.

If approved, the revamped format will debut in 2027, coinciding with the next commercial cycle for the Champions League broadcasting rights.

Μάλιστα, σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες της Mundo Deportivo, η European Super League έχει υποβάλει στην UEFA μια τελική “ειρηνευτική” πρόταση που περιλαμβάνει δύο βασικά σημεία.

Αφενός τη δημιουργία μιας παγκόσμιας πλατφόρμας ελεύθερης μετάδοσης των αγώνων και αφετέρου ένα αναθεωρημένο σύστημα διοργάνωσης, το οποίο θα αντικατοπτρίζει το τρέχον σύστημα του Champions League, προσθέτοντας, ωστόσο μια φαινομενικά πιο ζωηρή πινελιά.

Από την πλευρά της, η A22 προτείνει τη βελτίωση της δομής του τρέχοντος συστήματος, το οποίο, σύμφωνα με την ίδια, εξακολουθεί να δημιουργεί ανισορροπίες στις διασταυρώσεις στη φάση της League Phase. Συγκεκριμένα, η νέα πρόταση που υποβλήθηκε στην UEFA εισάγει μια μικρή αλλά σημαντική προσαρμογή.

Οι 36 σύλλογοι που αγωνίζονται επί του παρόντος στο Champions League θα χωριστούν σε δύο ομάδες:

Ομάδα 1 (ομάδες που κατατάσσονται στις θέσεις 1-18 σύμφωνα με τον συντελεστή της UEFA): θα παίζουν 8 αγώνες εναντίον κορυφαίων αντιπάλων (για παράδειγμα, σημαντικές αναμετρήσεις όπως Μπαρτσελόνα εναντίον Παρί).

Ομάδα 2 (ομάδες που κατατάσσονται στις θέσεις 19-36): θα παίζουν επίσης 8 αγώνες, αλλά σε μια πιο ισορροπημένη σειρά αγώνων, που θα καθορίζεται με κλήρωση όπως στο τρέχον σύστημα.

Οι αναμετρήσεις θα βασίζονται στην κατάταξη, για παράδειγμα, η 9η ομάδα του Ομίλου 1 θα αντιμετωπίσει την ομάδα με τη χαμηλότερη βαθμολογία από τον Όμιλο 2.

Αυτή η δομή στοχεύει στην αναβάθμιση του επιπέδου της φάσης των ομίλων με πιο σημαντικές αναμετρήσεις, ενώ παράλληλα δίνει στις ομάδες που κατατάσσονται στις θέσεις 19-36 πραγματικές ευκαιρίες να φτάσουν ψηλά στον θεσμό.

Η European Super League εισηγείται τη μετάδοση της διοργάνωσης -η οποία θα διατηρήσει την ονομασία Champions League- μέσω της streaming πλατφόρμας UNIFY, με στόχο την αναβάθμιση της εμπειρίας των φιλάθλων, προσφέροντας πιο εύκολη και οικονομικά προσιτή πρόσβαση στο περιεχόμενο.

Η υπηρεσία θα είναι διαθέσιμη σε δύο εκδοχές: μια δωρεάν επιλογή με διαφημίσεις προσαρμοσμένες ανάλογα με την τοποθεσία του χρήστη και μια premium συνδρομή, που θα προσφέρει απεριόριστη θέαση χωρίς διαφημιστικές παρεμβολές.

Η UEFA φέρεται να βλέπει το έργο με θετικό μάτι, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι μία τέτοια κίνηση μπορεί να εκσυγχρονίσει τις μεταδόσεις και να αποφέρει υψηλότερα έσοδα από το τρέχον μοντέλο.

Εάν εγκριθεί, το ανανεωμένο format θα κάνει το ντεμπούτο του το 2027, συμπίπτοντας με τον επόμενο εμπορικό κύκλο για τα δικαιώματα μετάδοσης του Champions League.
