Serious and well-prepared, the National Team defeated Israel 84-79 with Giannis Antetokounmpo doing things and miracles again. In the European eight, Greece, with Lithuania, will play the qualification for the medal matches.

The difference in quality was great. The National Team was characterized as a favorite in the match with Israel and on Sunday night (7/9) confirmed the predictions. It won 84-79, qualified for the quarterfinals of EuroBasket 2025 and showed itself fully prepared for the battle with Lithuania, which gives the ticket to the four.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo a road roller (35 points, 10 rebounds) even during the period when he faced foul trouble, against another team that played him from tough to unsportsmanlike, with Kostas Sloukas leading the way, but also with Alexander Samoturov providing significant assists in the second half, the excellently read Greece got the result and did not fall victim to a surprise like Serbia and France who said goodbye to the tournament. Even though they closed the match with 4/25 three-pointers…

Israel relied on the duo of Danny Avdiya – Roman Sorkin, which did a good job, but never threatened the National Team. The Israelis knew that they were significantly behind in talent, depth and bodies and from a point onwards they seemed to have come to terms with their fate.

The match

With Sloukas, Dorsey, Papanikolaou, Mitoglou, Antetokounmpo, Spanoulis opened the match, who saw efficiency and endurance in the tough play of the Israelis (7-2 in 2′). The National Team held the lead (18-12 in 6′), Giannis reached 11 points for 21-12 and there came an “answer” from Israel that gnawed at the difference, but again did not threaten much until the end of the period (28-22, Giannis 13 points from 6/6 two-pointers).

Without Giannis, Greece's game was predictable at the beginning of the second quarter, while as soon as Antetokounmpo re-entered the match, he committed his second foul. Spanoulis trusted him again, he reached 10/10 two-pointers and 21 points and the match was developing as we expected. With Greece ahead, but without escaping. At halftime (50-41) a good job had been done, with the National Team also having nine offensive rebounds.

Israel stepped on the gas at the beginning of the second half. With a three-pointer for 54-51 in the 23rd minute and with Spanoulis pulling Mitoglou to the bench to test Samoturov. Giannis committed his third foul in the 24th minute, when Dorsey was late in passing him on a surprise pass and forced him to claim possession that was being lost, Spanoulis kept him in the match and the team remained ahead and at a certain distance. Sloukas made a goal-foul to make it 63-58 in the 27th minute, Samoturov made a three-pointer for +8 and the score at the end of the third (67-59) flattered Israel. Giannis nailed the surprise pass for 73-59 in the 33rd minute and from then on Israel came to terms with its fate. Avdiya made a three-pointer to reduce the score to 10 (75-65 at 36′), but Giannis had another answer and Papanikolaou made a three-pointer for 80-70 at 38′ that decided everything. Even though the National Team did a lot to turn the finale into a thriller for strong nerves.

Σοβαρή και καλά προετοιμασμένη η Εθνική, νίκησε με 84-79 το Ισραήλ με τον Γιάννη Αντετοκούνμπο να κάνει ξανά πράγματα και θαύματα. Στους οκτώ της Ευρώπης η Ελλάδα, με τη Λιθουανία θα παίξει την πρόκριση στα ματς των μεταλλίων.

Η διαφορά ποιότητας, ήταν μεγάλη. Η Εθνική χαρακτηρίστηκε φαβορί στο ματς με το Ισραήλ και το βράδυ της Κυριακής (7/9) επιβεβαίωσε τα προγνωστικά. Νίκησε με 84-79, προκρίθηκε στα προημιτελικά του EuroBasket 2025 κι έδειξε πανέτοιμη για τη μάχη με τη Λιθουανία που δίνει το εισιτήριο για την τετράδα.

Με τον Γιάννη Αντετοκούνμπο οδοστρωτήρα (35 πόντοι, 10 ριμπάουντ) ακόμη και στο διάστημα που αντιμετώπισε φθορά με φάουλ, απέναντι σε ακόμα μία ομάδα που τον έπαιξε από σκληρά έως αντιαθλητικά, με τον Κώστα Σλούκα ηγετικό, αλλά και με τον Αλέξανδρο Σαμοντούροβ να δίνει σημαντικές βοήθειες στο δεύτερο μέρος, η άριστα διαβασμένη Ελλάδα πήρε το αποτέλεσμα και δεν έπεσε κι αυτή θύμα έκπληξης όπως η Σερβία και η Γαλλία που αποχαιρέτησαν το τουρνουά. Κι ας έκλεισε το ματς με 4/25 τρίποντα…

Το Ισραήλ στηρίχθηκε στο δίδυμο Ντένι Άβντιγια – Ρόμαν Σόρκιν, το οποίο έκανε καλή δουλειά, αλλά δεν απείλησε ποτέ την Εθνική. Οι Ισραηλινοί ήξεραν ότι υστερούσαν σημαντικά σε ταλέντο, βάθος και κορμιά και από ένα σημείο κι έπειτα έδειχναν συμβιβασμένοι με τη μοίρα τους.

Ο αγώνας

Με Σλούκα, Ντόρσεϊ, Παπανικολάου, Μήτογλου, Αντετοκούνμπο άνοιξε το ματς ο Σπανούλης, που είδε αποτελεσματικότητα και αντοχή στο σκληρό παιχνίδι των Ισραηλινών (7-2 στο 2′). Η Εθνική κράτησε το προβάδισμα (18-12 στο 6′), ο Γιάννης έφτασε τους 11 πόντους για το 21-12 και εκεί ήρθε μία “απάντηση” του Ισραήλ που ροκάνισε τη διαφορά, αλλά και πάλι δεν απείλησε ιδιαίτερα έως το τέλος της περιόδου (28-22, Γιάννης 13 πόντοι από 6/6 δίποντα).

Χωρίς τον Γιάννη, το παιχνίδι της Ελλάδας ήταν προβλέψιμο στις αρχές του δεύτερου δεκαλέπτου, ενώ μόλις ο Αντετοκούνμπο μπήκε ξανά στο ματς, έκανε το δεύτερο φάουλ του. Ο Σπανούλης τον εμπιστεύθηκε και πάλι, εκείνος έφτασε τα 10/10 δίποντα και τους 21 πόντους και το ματς εξελισσόταν όπως το περιμέναμε. Με την Ελλάδα μπροστά, χωρίς όμως να ξεφεύγει. Στο ημίχρονο (50-41) είχε γίνει καλή δουλειά, με την Εθνική να έχει και εννέα επιθετικά ριμπάουντ.

Το Ισραήλ πάτησε το γκάζι στην αρχή του β’ μέρους. Με τρίποντα για το 54-51 στο 23′ και με τον Σπανούλη να τραβάει στον πάγκο τον Μήτογλου για να δοκιμάσει τον Σαμοντούροβ. Ο Γιάννης έκανε το τρίτο του φάουλ στο 24′, όταν ο Ντόρσεϊ καθυστέρησε να του πασάρει στον αιφνιδιασμό και τον ανάγκασε να διεκδικήσει κατοχή που χανόταν, ο Σπανούλης τον κράτησε στο ματς και η ομάδα έμεινε μπροστά και σε μια κάποια απόσταση. Ο Σλούκας με γκολ-φάουλ έγραψε το 63-58 στο 27′, ο Σαμοντούροβ έβαλε τρίποντο για το +8 και το σκορ στο τέλος της τρίτης (67-59) κολάκευε το Ισραήλ.

Ο Γιάννης κάρφωσε στον αιφνιδιασμό για το 73-59 στο 33′ και από εκεί και πέρα το Ισραήλ συμβιβάστηκε με τη μοίρα του. Ο Άβντιγια έβαλε τρίποντο για να μειώσει στους 10 (75-65 στο 36′), όμως ο Γιάννης είχε κι άλλη απάντηση κι ο Παπανικολάου έβαλε το τρίποντο για το 80-70 στο 38′ που έκρινε τα πάντα. Κι ας έκανε η Εθνική πολλά για να μετατραπεί το φινάλε σε θρίλερ για γερά νεύρα.
