Tsitsipas - Striker 2-3: Shutout in four-hour thriller at the US Open (vids)
Stefanos Tsitsipas bids an early farewell to his turn in New York, defeated by Switzerland's Dominic Stricker 3-2 sets for the second round of the US Open, after a duel of four hours and four minutes.
Stefanos Tsitsipas needed it and in the end paid for it in New York, he was defeated by Dominic Stricker 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 3-6 and eliminated in the 2nd round of the US Open.
Against the left-handed Swiss, who came from the qualifiers to compete for the first time in his career in the main draw of the US Open, Tsitsipas found his trouble.
It saw the 21-year-old Striker hit a total of 78 winners and despite himself having 71 winners and double aces (22-11), he was unable to reach victory in the 4th set, when he served for 5-3.
Tsitsipas missed the chance to equal his best US Open performance, the 3rd rounds in 2020 and 2021 and go further, after he found himself 0-3 in the 5th set and did not find solutions to reverse the situation.

Tsitsipas "threw" set point in the 1st set as well
Without particular problems the players won the 1st service game (1-1). Tsitsipas with a winner, two consecutive aces and a mistake from Striker, Tsitsipas made it 2-1, but the Swiss won the next game (2-2) with three points in a row.
Tsitsipas with a winner closed the 5th game (3-2) and Sticker with two winners held his own serve for 3-3. In the 7th game, Striker went from 40-15 to 40-40, but with a winner and a mistake from the Swiss, Tsitsipas took the lead 4-3.
With the first love game of the match, Striker equalized 4-4, but Tsitsipas went without problems to 5-4. In the 10th game, Tsitsipas reached 30-40 due to a double fault by his opponent and a set point, but Striker, with two errors from Tsitsipas and a winner, came out of the difficult position (5-5).
Tsitsipas found himself in a difficult position immediately after, Stricker found himself on his first break point and succeeded after the error from Tsitsipas, advancing 6-5. Then he served for the set, reached 40-30 and with a forehand winner won it 7-5 in 43 minutes, with the Swiss having 19 winners, compared to 11 from Tsitsipas.
Dominating the tiebreak and 1-1
Tsitsipas started the 2nd set with a love game (1-0) and comfortably maintained the lead (2-1). In the 4th game, Tsitsipas led 15-40 and with Striker's mistake he reached the 1st break in the match for 3-1.
But he threw it in the wastebasket. Stricker led 0-40 and on his 3rd chance he got back the break (3-2) and by hitting three winners in the 6th game, he returned to the set (3-3).
With the second love game in the match, Tsitsipas led 4-3, reaching 5-4 as in the first set. He led 15-30, but with two errors of his own and an ace, Striker leveled at 5-5.
The Swiss found himself at 15-30, but Tsitsipas with three consecutive points and a smash made it 6-5. Stricker with the 30th winner, led 40-15 and tied at 6-6, sent the set to the tie break. There the Greek player with three winners and an ace reached 5-2 and with the mistake from Striker took the process and the set together with 7-6(2).
Tsitsipas missed the chance to equal his best performance at the US Open, the 3rd rounds in 2020 and 2021, after he found himself 0-3 in the 5th set and did not find solutions to reverse the situation.
Set point was "extinguished" and Tsitsipas cleared again in the tiebreak
Striker took a 1-0 lead with a love game, the equalizer from Tsitsipas came comfortably and immediately after that new data was created in the set. Tsitsipas led 15-40 and, reaching the break, led 2-1. However, as at the beginning of the 2nd set, Tsitsipas did not redeem it.
Stricker found himself at 0-40 and with the 2nd opportunity, he reached the 3rd overall break for 2-2 and holding his serve took a 3-2 lead. In the 6th game Tsitsipas avoided the worst, Striker found himself with a break point at 30-40, but Tsitsipas after the 2nd advantage closed the game for 3-3.
With three winners and an ace in the 7th game, Striker led 4-3, with Tsitsipas in the first advantage, he took the game for 4-4. The Swiss with a winner closed the 9th game for 5-4, but playing aggressively, Tsitsipas equalized at 5-5.
The Swiss with three consecutive misses from Tsitsipas reached 6-5. A battle took place in the 12th game, Tsitsipas with two aces and an error from the Swiss took the lead 40-15, but was faced with a set point by Stricker.
But with two mistakes from the Swiss he took the advantage and with an ace he equalized at 6-6, with the set being decided in a tie break. Tsitsipas led 5-2 and 6-4 and on the 2nd set point he led Stricker into an error with a backhand volley, winning the set 7-6(5) for 2-1.
Tsitsipas lost a 5-3 lead
Stricker opened the 4th set with a love game and a break and, holding his serve, took a 2-1 lead. But Tsitsipas had an answer, with two winners and an ace he reduced to 2-1.
In the 4th game after 40-30 and the advantage from Striper, he found his own advantage and reaching the 3rd break in the match he equalized at 2-2. Tsitsipas closed the 5th game with a winner, passing 3-2.
Striper equalized at 3-3, but Tsitsipas responded with a love game for 4-3. Even reaching a new break, Tsitsipas went to 5-3 and served for the victory, but he did not succeed.
Striker broke to 5-4, staying in the match. The Swiss comfortably leveled at 5-5, bringing the set in the balance. Tsitsipas barely reached 6-5 and Stricker sent the set to the tie break.
There Tsitsipas turned 3-4 into 5-4, but his opponent showed character. He reached 6-5 and a set point, which Tsitsipas saved and then at 7-6 and with the mistake from Tsitsipas, he took the set 7-6(6).
Ultimate Striker Domination
The Swiss entered the 5th set with high spirits. Taking three winners he made it 1-0, in the next game he came back from 40-15, erased the two advantages of Tsitsipas and in his 1st, with a backhand winner he reached the 6th break for 2-0 and with a love game he escaped with 3 -0.
Tsitsipas responded with a love game (3-1), but Stricker with a flop and an ace kept +3 (4-1). Tsitsipas dropped to 4-2, but with another love game Striker went to 5-2, with Tsitsipas responding with the same coin for 5-3.
The TV camera caught the Swiss singing in his seat before the 9th game and immediately after he finished the match. First he saved a break point at 30-40 and with three points in a row he reached 6-3 and the most important victory of his career.

Ο Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς αποχαιρετά νωρίς με τη σειρά του τη Νέα Υόρκη, ηττήθηκε από τον Ελβετό, Ντομινίκ Στρίκερ με 3-2 σετ για τον 2ο γύρο του US Open, έπειτα από μονομαχία τεσσάρων ωρών και τεσσάρων λεπτών.
Ο Στέφανος Τσιτσιπάς τα χρειάστηκε και στο τέλος το πλήρωσε στη Νέα Υόρκη, ηττήθηκε από τον Ντομινίκ Στρίκερ με 5-7, 7-6(2), 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 3-6 και αποκλείστηκε στον 2ο γύρο του US Open.
Απέναντι στον αριστερόχειρα Ελβετό, που ήρθε από τα προκριματικά και να αγωνιστεί για πρώτη φορά στην καριέρα του στο κυρίως ταμπλό του US Open, o Τσιτσιπάς βρήκε τον μπελά του.
Είδε τον 21χρονο Στρίκερ να βγάζει συνολικά 78 winners και παρότι ο ίδιος είχε 71 winners και διπλάσιους άσους (22-11), δεν μπόρεσε να φθάσει στη νίκη στο 4ο σετ, όταν σέρβιρε με το υπέρ του 5-3.
Ο Τσιτσιπάς έχασε την ευκαιρία να ισοφαρίσει την καλύτερη επίδοσή του στο US Open, οι 3οι γύροι το 2020 και το 2021 και να προχωρήσει πιο μακριά, αφού στο 5ο σετ βρέθηκε στο 0-3 και δεν βρήκε λύσεις να αντιστρέψει την κατάσταση.

«Πέταξε» set point και το 1ο σετ ο Τσιτσιπάς
Χωρίς ιδιαίτερα προβλήματα οι παίκτες κατέκτησαν το 1ο service game (1-1). O Τσιτσιπάς με έναν winner, δύο διαδοχικούς άσους και ένα λάθος από τον Στρίκερ, ο Τσιτσιπάς έκανε το 2-1, όμως ο Ελβετός με τρεις σερί πόντoυς κατέκτησε το επόμενο game (2-2).
Ο Τσιτσιπάς με winner έκλεισε το 5ο game (3-2) και ο Στίκερ με δύο winners κράτησε το δικό του σερβίς για το 3-3. Στο 7ο game o Στρίκερ από το 40-15, πήγε στο 40-40, όμως με winner και λάθος από τον Ελβετό, ο Τσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε 4-3.
Ο Στρίκερ με το πρώτο love game στον αγώνα ισοφάρισε 4-4, όμως ο Τσιτσιπάς πήγε χωρίς προβλήματα στο 5-4. Στο 10o game o Τσιτσιπάς έφθασε στο 30-40 από διπλό λάθος του αντιπάλου του και σε set point, όμως ο Στρίκερ με δύο λάθη από τον Τσιτσιπά και έναν winner, βγήκε από τη δύσκολη θέση (5-5).
Σε δύσκολη θέση βρέθηκε αμέσως μετά ο Τσιτσιπάς, ο Στρίκερ βρέθηκε στο πρώτο δικό του break point και το πέτυχε μετά το λάθος από τον Τσιτσιπά, προσπερνώντας 6-5. Μετά σέρβιρε για το σετ, έφθασε στο 40-30 και με forehand winner το κατέκτησε με 7-5 σε 43 λεπτά, με τον Ελβετό να έχει 19 winners, έναντι 11 από τον Τσιτσιπά.
Κυρίαρχος στο tiebreak και 1-1
Ο Τσιτσιπάς άρχισε με love game το 2ο σετ (1-0) και με άνεση διατήρησε το προβάσισμα (2-1). Στο 4ο game o Tσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε με 15-40 και με το λάθος του Στρίκερ έφθασε στο 1ο break στον αγώνα για το 3-1.
Όμως το πέταξε στο καλάθι των αχρήστων. Ο Στρίκερ προηγήθηκε 0-40 και στην 3η ευκαιρία του πήρε πίσω το break (3-2) και βγάζοντας τρεις winners στο 6ο game, επέστρεψε στο σετ (3-3).
Με το δεύτερο love game στον αγώνα, ο Τσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε 4-3, φθάνοντας όπως και στο πρώτο σετ στο 5-4. Προηγήθηκε 15-30, αλλά με δύο λάθη του και άσο ο Στρίκερ ισοφάρισε σε 5-5.
Ο Ελβετός βρέθηκε στο 15-30, όμως ο Τσιτσιπάς με τρεις σερί πόντους και smash έκανε το 6-5. Ο Στρίκερ με τον 30ό winner, προηγήθηκε 40-15 και ισοφαρίζοντας σε 6-6 έστειλε το σετ στο tie break. Εκεί ο Έλληνας παίκτης με τρεις winners και έναν άσο έφθασε στο 5-2 και με το λάθος από τον Στρίκερ πήρε τη διαδικασία και μαζί το σετ με 7-6(2).

«Εσβησε» set point και καθάρισε ξανά στo tiebreak ο Τσιτσιπάς
Ο Στρίκερ με love game προηγήθηκε 1-0, η ισοφάριση από τον Τσιτσιπά ήρθε με άνεση και αμέσως μετά δημιουργήθηκαν νέα δεδομένα στο σετ. Ο Τσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε 15-40 και φθάνοντας σε break προσπέρασε με 2-1. Όπως όμως και στις αρχές του 2ου σετ ο Τσιτσιπάς δεν το εξαργύρωσε.
Ο Στρίκερ βρέθηκε στο 0-40 και με τη 2η ευκαιρία, έφθασε στο 3ο συνολικά break για το 2-2 και κρατώντας το σερβίς του προηγήθηκε 3-2. Στο 6o game ο Τσιτσιπάς απέφυγε τα χειρότερα, ο Στρίκερ βρέθηκε με break point στο 30-40, όμως ο Τσιτσιπάς μετά το 2ο αβαντάζ έκλεισε το game για το 3-3.
Mε τρεις winners και έναν άσο στο 7ο game ο Στρίκερ προηγήθηκε 4-3, με τον Tσιτσιπά στο πρώτο αβαντάζ πήρε το game για το 4-4. Ο Ελβετός με winner έκλεισε το 9o game για το 5-4, όμως παίζοντας επιθετικά ο Τσιτσιπάς ισοφάρισε σε 5-5.
Ο Ελβετός με τρία διαδοχικά άστοχα χτυπήματα από τον Τσιτσιπά έφθασε στο 6-5. Mάχη έγινε στο 12ο game, ο Τσιτσιπάς με δύο άσους και λάθος από τον Ελβετό προηγήθηκε με 40-15, όμως βρέθηκε απέναντι σε set point του Στρίκερ.
Όμως με δύο λάθη από τον Ελβετό πήρε το αβαντάζ και με άσο ισοφάρισε σε 6-6, με το σετ να κρίνεται στο tie break. Ο Τσιτσιπάς προηγήθηκε 5-2 και 6-4 και στο 2ο set point οδήγησε τον Στρίκερ σε λάθος με backhand volley, κατακτώντας το σετ με 7-6(5) για το 2-1.
Ο Τσιτσιπάς έχασε προβάδισμα 5-3
Ο Στρίκερ άνοιξε με love game και break το 4ο σετ και κρατώντας το σερβίς του προηγήθηκε με 2-1. Ομως ο Τσιτσιπάς είχε απάντηση, με δύο winner και έναν άσο μείωσε σε 2-1.
Στο 4ο game μετά το 40-30 και το αβαντάζ από τον Στρίπερ, βρήκε δικό του αβαντάζ και φθάνοντας στο 3ο break στον αγώνα ισοφάρισε σε 2-2. Με winner o Τσιτσιπάς έκλεισε το 5ο game, προσπερνώντας 3-2.
Ο Στρίπερ ισοφάρισε σε 3-3, όμως ο Τσιτσιπάς απάντησε με love game για το 4-3. Φθάνοντας μάλιστα σε νέο break ο Τσιτσιπάς πήγε στο 5-3 και σέρβιρε για τη νίκη, όμως δεν το πέτυχε.
Ο Στρίκερ με break μείωσε σε 5-4, μένοντας στον αγώνα. Ο Ελβετός με άνεση ισοφάρισε σε 5-5, φέρνοντας το σετ στην ισορροπία. Ο Τσιτσιπάς έστω και δύσκολα έφθασε στο 6-5 και τον Στρίκερ να στέλνει το σετ στο tie break.
Εκεί ο Τσιτσιπάς μετέτρεψε το 3-4 σε 5-4, όμως ο αντίπαλός του έδειξε χαρακτήρα. Εφθασε στο 6-5 και σε set point, που έσωσε ο Τσιτσιπάς και μετά στο 7-6 και με το λάθος από τον Τσιτσιπά, πήρε το σετ με 7-6(6).
Απόλυτη κυριαρχία Στρίκερ
Ο Ελβετός μπήκε με την ψυχολογία στα ύψη στο 5ο σετ. Βγάζοντας τρεις winners έκανε το 1-0, στο επόμενο game επέστρεψε από το 40-15, έσβησε τα δύο αβαντάζ του Τσιτσιπά και στο 1ο δικό του, με backhand winner έφθασε στο 6ο break για το 2-0 και με love game ξέφυγε με 3-0.
Ο Τσιτσιπάς απάντησε με love game (3-1), όμως ο Στρίκερ με λόμπα και άσο διατήρησε το +3 (4-1). Ο Τσιτσιπάς μείωσε σε 4-2, όμως με νέο love game ο Στρίκερ πήγε στο 5-2, με τον Τσιτσιπά να απαντά με το ίδιο νόμισμα για το 5-3.
Ο τηλεοπτικός φακός έπιασε τον Ελβετό να τραγουδά στη θέση του πριν από το 9ο game και αμέσως μετά τελείωσε τον αγώνα. Πρώτα γλίτωσε break point στο 30-40 και με τρεις σερί πόντους έφθασε στο 6-3 και στην πιο σημαντική νίκη της καριέρας του.
