Official: With Play-In the Euroleague from the new season

The institution of play-ins is established from the coming season (2023/24) in the Euroleague.

It was known a few days ago, now it's official! The Euroleague decided to establish play-ins following the standards of the NBA. What does this mean; The first six teams of the regular season will now be guaranteed a place in the playoffs, while from seventh to tenth place they will have to earn their presence in the playoffs through the newly established process.

Under the new format, the seventh-ranked team in the regular season will host the eighth-ranked team at home in a knockout game, with the winner securing a place in the playoffs against the second-ranked team.

Accordingly, the ninth will welcome the tenth, with the winner of this pair being hosted three days after the loser of the 7-8 pair and the winner of this match will advance to the playoffs playing the top seed.

Essentially, that is, the seventh and eighth of the regular season will need one win having... two chances to enter the playoffs, while the ninth and tenth will have to win two "final" to play in the playoffs.

The play-in format has been successfully implemented in the NBA for a few years now. In fact, this year the Miami Heat reached the finals through this process. With the new system, more teams have strong motivation until the end of the regular season and the number of indifferent ones decreases.

Ο θεσμός των play-in καθιερώνεται από την ερχόμενη σεζόν (2023/24) στην Ευρωλίγκα.

Ήταν εδώ και λίγες μέρες γνωστό, πλέον είναι κι επίσημο! Η Ευρωλίγκα αποφάσισε την καθιέρωση των play-in ακολουθώντας τα πρότυπα του ΝΒΑ. Τι σημαίνει αυτό; Πλέον εξασφαλισμένη θέση στα playoffs θα έχουν οι έξι πρώτες ομάδες της regular season, ενώ από την έβδομη ως την δέκατη θέση θα πρέπει να κερδίσουν την παρουσία τους στα playoffs μέσω της νεοσύστατης διαδικασίας.

Με βάση το νέο format, η έβδομη ομάδα της κανονικής περιόδου θα υποδέχεται την όγδοη στην έδρα της σε ένα νοκ άουτ παιχνίδι, με το νικητή να εξασφαλίζει την παρουσία της στα playoffs απέναντι στη δεύτερη ομάδα της κατάταξης.

Αντίστοιχα, ο ένατος θα υποδέχεται τον δέκατο, με τον νικητή του ζευγαριού αυτού να φιλοξενείται τρεις μέρες μετά από τον ηττημένο του ζευγαριού 7-8 και ο νικητής αυτού του αγώνα θα προκρίνεται στα playoffs παίζοντας με τον πρώτο της κατάταξης.

Ουσιαστικά, δηλαδή, ο έβδομος και ο όγδοος της κανονικής περιόδου θα χρειάζονται μία νίκη έχοντας… δύο ευκαιρίες για να μπουν στα playoffs, ενώ ο ένατος και ο δέκατος θα πρέπει να κερδίσουν δύο «τελικούς» για να παίξουν στα playoffs.

Το format των play-in εφαρμόζεται με επιτυχία εδώ και λίγα χρόνια στο ΝΒΑ. Μάλιστα φέτος οι Μαϊάμι Χιτ έφτασαν μέσω αυτής της διαδικασίας μέχρι τους τελικούς. Με το νέο σύστημα περισσότερες ομάδες έχουν ισχυρό κίνητρο μέχρι το τέλος της κανονικής περιόδου και μειώνονται ο αριθμός των αδιάφορων.
