At the meeting on Wednesday 31/3, the UEFA executive committee is expected to approve the new format of the Champions League that will be valid from the 2024-25 season, according to Athletic.

It has been a thought for a long time, now it seems that it is being done and maybe on Wednesday (31/3) the new format of the Champions League from the 2024-25 season will be formalized and approved by the UEFA executive committee. A format that will include 36 teams, more games, more revenue and a change in the way it is conducted.

This is at least supported by the Athletic website in an article on Friday (26/3) and even quotes relevant details about the new format that will follow the "Swiss model" as the article states. And there will be an increase in the games from six to ten.

But what is the "Swiss Model"?

It is the new format of the Champions League after the completion of this cycle of the tournament which ends the 2023-24 season.

The group stage with the 32 teams will be eliminated. Instead there will be 36 teams in a "Swiss Model" league in which each team will play 10 games, five at home and five away. The matches will be based on the ranking of the teams and the clubs will be scored from one to 36.

The first eight teams will go directly to the knockout phase of the 16 teams and the remaining 16 teams, from ninth to 24th place, will go to the playoffs to decide which will be the next eight teams to qualify. While the last 12 will be excluded directly.

Which countries-teams will take the four extra places?

UEFA's proposal is to give one of the four new places to the team that will finish in fourth place in the country's championship which is in fifth place based on the relevant ranking. France is currently in this position but Portugal is close enough.

This means that the five major leagues will have four guaranteed places in the Champions League.

The other three positions based on the proposal of the European federation are to be given with the historical performance in the European competitions of the previous five years. This will act as "security" for teams that did well in Europe but not in their leagues.

Στη συνεδρίαση της Τετάρτης 31/3 η εκτελεστική επιτροπή της UEFA αναμένεται να εγκρίνει το νέο format του Champions League που θα ισχύσει από τη σεζόν 2024-25 σύμφωνα με το Athletic.

Εδώ και καιρό υπήρχε σαν σκέψη, πλέον φαίνεται πως γίνεται πράξη και ίσως την Τετάρτη (31/3) υπάρξει επισημοποίηση και έγκριση του νέου format του Champions League από τη σεζόν 2024-25 από την εκτελεστική επιτροπή της UEFA. Ένα φορμάτ το οποίο θα περιλαμβάνει 36 ομάδες, περισσότερα παιχνίδια, περισσότερα έσοδα και αλλαγή στον τρόπο διεξαγωγής του.

Αυτό υποστηρίζει τουλάχιστον η ιστοσελίδα Athletic σε δημοσίευμα της την Παρασκευή (26/3) και μάλιστα παραθέτει και σχετικές λεπτομέρειες γύρω από το νέο φορμάτ το οποίο θα ακολουθήσει το "Ελβετικό μοντέλο" όπως αναφέρει το δημοσίευμα. Και θα υπάρξει αύξηση των αγώνων από έξι σε δέκα.

Τι είναι όμως το "Ελβετικό Μοντέλο";

Είναι το νέο φορμάτ του Champions League μετά την ολοκλήρωση αυτού του κύκλου της διοργάνωσης το οποίο τελειώνει τη σεζόν 2023-24.

Η φάση των ομίλων με τις 32 ομάδες θα εξαλειφθεί. Αντίθετα θα είναι 36 ομάδες σε "Ελβετικό Μοντέλο" πρωταθλήματος στο οποίο κάθε ομάδα θα παίζει 10 παιχνίδια, πέντε στην έδρα της και πέντε εκτός έδρας. Οι αγωνιστικές θα είναι με βάση την κατάταξη των ομάδων και οι σύλλογοι θα βαθμολογούνται από το ένα έως το 36.

Οι πρώτες οκτώ ομάδες απευθείας θα περνάνε στη φάση των νοκ άουτ των 16 ομάδων και οι υπόλοιπες 16 ομάδες, από την ένατη θέση έως την 24η θέση, θα πηγαίνουν στα playoffs για να αποφασιστεί ποιες θα είναι οι επόμενες οκτώ ομάδες που θα προκριθούν. Ενώ οι τελευταίες 12 θα αποκλειστούν απευθείας.

Ποιες χώρες-ομάδες θα πάρουν τις τέσσερις έξτρα θέσεις;

Η πρόταση της UEFA είναι να δώσει μια από τις τέσσερις νέες θέσεις στην ομάδα που θα τερματίσει στην τέταρτη θέση στο πρωτάθλημα της χώρας που είναι στην πέμπτη θέση με βάση το σχετικό ράνκιγνκ. Αυτή τη στιγμή σε αυτή τη θέση βρίσκεται η Γαλλία αλλά η Πορτογαλία είναι αρκετά κοντά.

Αυτό σημαίνει πως τα πέντε μεγάλα πρωταθλήματα θα έχουν τέσσερις εγγυημένες θέσεις στο Champions League.

Οι άλλες τρεις θέσεις με βάση την πρόταση της ευρωπαϊκής ομοσπονδίας είναι να δίδονται με την ιστορική επίδοση στις ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις τις προηγούμενες πέντε χρονιές. Αυτό θα λειτουργήσει ως "ασφάλεια" για ομάδες που τα πήγαν καλά στην Ευρώπη αλλά όχι στα πρωταθλήματα τους.
