Esta no es la primera vez que el club enfrenta problemas financieros. A fines de la década de 1990, el Atletico incluso fue degradado a la segunda categoría para ser sustancialmente regenerado a partir de 2007 en adelante.

Μάλιστα η εποχή "Ντιέγκο Σιμεόνε" είναι από τις πιο επιτυχημένες στην ιστορία του συλλόγου, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει πως έπαψαν να υπάρχουν οικονομικές δυσκολίες. Σύμφωνα με τους Ισπανούς, η Ατλέτικο έχει χρέη 483.000.000€ που μεγάλωσαν μετά τη μετακόμιση στο νέο υπερσύγχρονο γήπεδο.

Έτσι, αποφασίστηκε να πουληθεί μέρος των μετοχών του συλλόγου στον δισεκατομμυριούχο επιχειρηματία Ιντάλ Οφέρ, ο οποίος θα αποκτήσει το 15% του μετοχικού κεφαλαίου. Με το ποσό που θα μπει στα ταμεία, η Ατλέτικο θα πάρει βαθιά ανάσα με σκοπό να μην αντιμετωπίσει προβλήματα στο μέλλον.

Μέχρι στιγμής το 54.64% ανήκει στον Μιγκέλ Άνχελ Ζιλ Μαρίν, το 20% στην κινεζική εταιρία Wanda, που έχει δώσει το όνομα της στο νέο γήπεδο, ενώ ο πρόεδρος του συλλόγου Ενρίκε Σερέζο διαθέτει το 17.9% και το υπόλοιπο ποσοστό είναι σε μικρομετόχους.
